Re: windows media connect 2

2007-04-07 Thread Beth Hatch
Hi Leslie,

If you're talking about trying to fix Game day audio, I uninstalled all
of windows media player entirely. If you take this route, you might
want to back up any libraries you might be using if you don't want to
have to set them up manually again. Since I generally use Real Player,
I didn't have to worry about this. I believe the game day audio player
is an embedded version of Windows Media player and that it may also use
flash player as well somehow. If your question wasn't about game day
audio, then I apologize.smile

I have doen this in the past but can't quite remember how. I think you are
supposed to select all but the first track, then go into properties. This is
the part where I am not sure. There 2 check boxes to the left of the OK button
and I can't rember which one is supposed to be checked or unchecked and if
there is any other thing to do.

Any assistance appreciated.

play lists in media player 11

2007-04-07 Thread Adrien Collins
Hi

I have just worked out how to create playlists for my music
albums using windows media player 11. I have several albums
with more than one cd but mp11 insists on putting album 4 or
8 or another volume above volume one on a playlist. If I
created a separate playlist for each and every cd it would
be too complicated. Mp11 also mixes up the tracks on a play
list i.e. tracks 1 3 5 and so on and the others are listed
at the bottom. I have also noticed mp11 plays the tracks
starting with album 4 whether I want it to or not.

How can I correct all these problems or prevent them
happening in the future?

Regards

Adrien

wmp 11 menu trouble

2007-04-07 Thread Bobcat
I just got WMP 11 by accident. So, I figured I'd give it a go.

So far, I can get around the player fairly well. I just have one stupid
problem. It's the menu bar. No matter whether I turn on classic menus or
not, the menu bar gets focus and I can't tab around the main interface. I
have to use the Jaws cursor to click on the display to bring focus away from
the menu. It's like the menu bar was activated but won't go away. Pressing
alt doesn't dismiss it.

Actually, there are a few other problems, like: The Jaws keystrokes to
focus to the play list or library tree view don't work now. And, I can't
figure out how to select different albums when I select an artist in the
play list

SoundTap

2007-04-07 Thread Dana S. Leslie
Yesterday, when I was learning to use ScreamerRadio, I discovered another

it's doing screwy things to my sound card assignments, etc. Is anyone here

I tried SoundTap and it was a disaster. It is not the same company as
Screamer. SoundTap is an NCH product, the makers of Express Burn. I would
suggest you uninstall SoundTap. It has its own uninstall program on the
hard drive in the NCH\SoundTap folder. Good luck.

hi there.

I had exactly this problem until recently. I had 512 meg of RAM and thought
it was enough with jaws too. Seems not for my system.

So here's what I did with help from list members here (thanks to those who
responded)

I increased my Virtual Memory from 1 gig to 4 gigs. At the same time, I
installed some new RAM in my machine. I now have 1.256 RAM

Don't know if increasing the virtual memory on its own would have sufficed.
Can I suggest that you try increasing the virtual memory today and see if
you still have the problem. If not then add some RAM.

I really hadn't believed that memory was my issue but it seems I was wrong.

Hope this is useful.

Well, I don't think I'd call it a disaster, just VERY awkward and annoying to
use, especially if you have multiple sound cards and a screen reader. I do

I don't understand why Screamer doesn't allow one to save to a .wav file. I
mean, how difficult could it have been to have programmed that option?

Re: CPU usage of Sound Forge vs Goldwave

2007-04-07 Thread Damon
Oh and here's something off Yahoo Answers explaining how to increase your
virtual memory. It's very simple, just takes a few keystrokes and costs
nothing.

right click on My Computer and go
down to where it says Properties. You should get an informational screen
with a bunch of tabs. Click on the tab that says Advanced. Where it says
Performance,
click on the Settings button. Click on the Advanced Tab again. Now you
should see a page that has your Virtual Memory, click on the Change button.
Here
you can edit how much virtual memory you want. I generally recommend setting
this to no more than 2 times the amount of actual memory you have. So if you
have for example 512 Megs of RAM, you would put in 1024 which equals 1 Gig
of Virtual Memory. Oh, by the way, this is instructions for Windows XP,

mp3 converter?

2007-04-07 Thread Brandon Hicks
Hi all,
Has anyone ever run into a music converter that can convert by bitrate?
What I mean is one I can load a folder into and define which files I
want converted. Say for example I wanted to have all files with a
bitrate greater than 192 kbps converted down to save some space.
Normally, I'd either have to go through all the files and find the ones
that were over, or just reconvert them all and get lower quality files
taking up more space, defeating the whole purpose.
If anyone can recommend a program, please drop me a message.
Thanks,
Brandon

Re: Information and help needed regarding MP3 players

2007-04-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Well, the sighted help I was referring to was pretty minimal. I needed
it mostly to get familiar with the player and then when I'd gotten
myself in trouble loading some new firmware on it. Others may disagree,
but IMHO, if you're gonna play with the Rockbox firmware then you need
to be willing to spend some time reading up on what to do, be prepared
to experiment with it a bit and be patient and persistent! Knowing a
little bit about electronics, at least the terms used, would also help.
I don't want to scare anyone off, but you can't go into it thinking
it'll work right out of the box, or you'll probably be pretty
disappointed and frustrated. If you do get it all working, it is pretty
sweet!

Dan Murphy wrote:
Actually I was thinking more along the lines of one of the smaller flash
players with 1 or 2 GB, although the iriver one sounds interesting. Our
access to sighted help is somewhat tenuous since the person who could help
us is a partial who gets headaches when looking at the screen too long.
As I said before, I would be happy with a machine that I could simply hook
up to the Usb port on the PC and just drag files into it and as long as I
know where the basic navigation keys on the player are that would be fine.

I'm not familiar with the Sony series you mentioned, but what kind of
MP3 player are you looking for? Are you looking for a compact flash
based MP3 player that has maybe 1GB or 2GM of storage, or are you
looking for a hard drive based player that has 20GB, 40GB or more of
 storage?

With the compact flash based player you have several choices. The one
that I'm familiar with is the Nomad MuVo from Creative. Unfortunately,
Creative doesn't distribute it anymore, but you might find one on the
web somewhere. It doesn't have a display and just a few buttons to
adjust the volumen and volume and skip from song to song. There are a
few other similar options on the market, like the iPod Shuffle. The
nice thing about the MuVo that I have is that it doesn't come with any
software, it's just a UMS device on your computer and you can use
Windows Explorer to move MP3's over to it. It also plays WMA and DRM
files, so you can use it with Audible and Overdrive.

In the area of a harddrive based MP3 player, I recently just got myself
an iRiver H10 20GB MP3 player and I loaded the Rockbox firmware on it.
You may need some patience and sighted help to get this working, but if
you do, you end up with a device that has spoken menus and even spoken
song titles, although it doesn't have TTS built into it. You can still
get the iRiver H10 on line, in a 5GB, 6GB and 20GB version. I got mine
 recently from woot.com for $99.

Sorry I don't have information on any newer players, but I'm just
sharing my personal experience and remember, these are just my
opinions. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!

nice to look at but the file management software that comes with it
doesn't get along well at all with Jaws 5.10.
As I am very new to all this I haven't paid much attention to all the
messages on here about the various players and their levels of

 usability

for blind people, so I need to do some catching up. I'm not

 interested in

the apple product line since I understand their music format is

 totally

proprietary, and I would mostly be using it to listen to my own stuff

 that

I have recorded. I also don't need something with a radio built in

 since

I own several AM/FM radios that work fine with headphones and can be

 used

 for that purpose.
also I wouldn't mind just being able to forward and rewind through the
songs, because I really don't want to have to spend a lot of money,

 and

anyway, I would just have them all arranged in one folder.
I quite liked the look of the Sony, it was very nice and small, and

 the

buttons seemed accessible enough, but I was mostly trying to see if I
could get the software to work even slightly with Jaws, and so I

 really

didn't learn too much about the player itself.
any suggestions, comments, pointers are welcome.
 thanks in advance.

Re: Information and help needed regarding MP3 players

2007-04-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure that the fact you're looking at longer playing audio would
change the parameters you're looking for. It may be that that longer
playing audio is captured at a lower bit rate, so actually takes up less
space. If you have these shows already downloaded to your PC, you can
take a look at them and see how big they are and then calculate how much
space you need, based on how frequently you'd want to update them on
your MP3 player.

Right now I use a 128MB Nomad MuVo from Creative to listen to audio
books from Overdrive and Audible. Although it would be nice if it were
a bit bigger, these are usually things I don't need to keep around
forever, especially with the books from Overdrive, which expire in two
weeks. Copying a new book over to my MuVo every few days, at most, is
no big deal.

I use my 20GB iRiver to store my music. This works out, since I
generally want to keep my music around for a while and have a large
selection of music to choose from when I'm listening to music without
having to copy it over to a small compact flash based MP3 player every time.

I'm guessing that you'd still want a 1GB or 2GB compact flash based MP3
player. I'm not sure what's accessible out there right now, but the
MuVo Mix from Creative would fit the bill. Once again, Creative doesn't
distribute them any more, but you could still find them I'm sure. The
iPod Shuffle is accessible, but the trick is getting the music onto the
Shuffle. I think there are JAWS scripts and 3rd party applications that
can help with this. There are also products made specifically for the
blind, like the Bookport, which will work, but they tend to be a bit
more expensive. As I'm rambling on, I think someone also suggested the
recorders from Olympis, which sound like they would be a good option as
well.

Hopefully others will chime in soon. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for all that info. I am looking for something similar to Dan
except, in my case, what I need is something that has a large enough
capacity that it can handle podcasts and other downloaded audio shows for
 listening in the car.
So ideally it would be something that either my sighted wife or I could
transfer shows from a pc to it and that either one of us could handle in
 the car.
The Iriver, given its capacities, sounds as if this may be what we are
 after.
I'll be awaiting others comments here and elsewhere.
I realize that most folks get these players for music; but
neither my wife or I are much into that.
Does this fact that we are looking for playing back longer time audio
podcasts rather than 3-4 minutes of music cuts change the parameters at
 all?

Re: dvd question

2007-04-07 Thread Gary Petraccaro
Plus r's will Not play on older machines. The minus r's might. Otherwise, the
only question is whether your particular machines will play what you have.
