Re: Easy CD-DA Extractor and Ripping Time

2007-04-13 Thread Kevin Lloyd
Hi Bruce.

Can't speak for that ripper specifically as I don't use it. However, I've
seen this with other rippers, namely CDEX and media player. Typically,
you've got a dirty or scratched disc. The extra time taken is either error
correction going on to try and compensate, if you have that feature enabled
or, pure problems trying to read the disc. Chances are you will have a
degraded quality in whichever of the tracks is taking the longer time to
rip.

Regards.

I have a set of four disks. Same length, same type of content. Disk 1 took
several times longer to rip to wave files as disk 2. Does anyone know what
would account for this, and will there be a difference in audio quality of
 the rips?

I don't think that there is one best sight -- just a lot of
 good ones
that the serious listener needs to be aware of.
One reason for saying this is that no one database has
 everything.
Another reason is that different websites have differing
 approaches to how
 things are organized.
For example, I often use that streamingradioguide page I posted
 yesterday
 for its handy
having a state's listings right in front of me.
When I want to do an area search, I often use the Radio-Locator
 site as it
gives me an overview of what the local radio dial looks like.
Billsparks.org works well when I have a particular call letter in
 mind and
he happens to include it in his database.
Vtuner.com is also great for quick call letter searches.
MikesRadioWorld strong suite is international listing; Vtuner is
 also
 heavy into this.
In short, the avid internet radio listner nees to be familiar
 with as many
sites as possible and figure out which one to use given the task
 at hand.

Re: A.M. Radio

2007-04-13 Thread Adrian Spratt
Hi, Dana.

Actually, my favorite tabletop radio is the Boston Acoustics HD Receptor,
which comes with a satellite speaker for first-rate stereo production. It's
true that stations can be hard to tune into and that you must wait an
annoying five seconds for HD channels to play, but the sound quality is
superb. Here in New York City, there are extra HD channels for classical
music and the only source of sixties oldies. Even regular FM stations sound
better than I've ever heard them. The cost of this radio has lately been in
the $300 range, but I got it for $250 and I believe that price is still
promoted from time to time. I haven't double-checked C Crane for its current
pricing.

Re: A.M. Radio

2007-04-13 Thread Gary G Schindler
Chuck,
I think the information you have been given is correct. there is a marked
improvement in the sound of the AM, but if your market only has one AM station
broadcasting a digital signal, which is turned off at night, it isn't worth the
expense of the radio. also to a middle aged person rounding the bend becoming a
senior citizen, there aren't enough formats to my liking being broadcast on the
HD
channels that would persuade me to buy an HD radio.
the Accurian radio I looked at from the shack had poor sensitivity too.

What you're looking for on that page is a button. I think it will say 'full

navigation key does not pick it up. You're having trouble because what you
want is buried in that table describing all the versions and features. The
buttons are near the bottom.

Winamp Script differences

2007-04-13 Thread Peter Scanlon
I am now using Winamp 5.3 and have resolved some issues I had, however I do
notice a difference in the way things work with the Playlist now that I have
installed the latest small update to Jaws 8.01.1177U

Where before when you cursor up or down to a track which is the currently
playing or current selected track, the scripts would generate a tone to
indicate current track, however now with the new version it is a spoken
current track which Jaws says after telling you what the track is.
I know this might be a small thing to some, but it does save extra
verbalisation when not necessary, as the tone would be reported before the
track would be read, and if you wanted to you could shut up the speech.
I wonder if there is a technical reason why they have done this?

Re: New Sony Sound Forge 9: Special Upgrade Offer

2007-04-13 Thread Marijan Janev
Hi Anders,
Yes, alt+shift is windows shortcut to cycle throu the installed keybords.
If you have only Swedish and US, you can switch to US, and with the same
alt+shif you can back to Swedish keyboard. It's so easy.
Good luck!

Subject: How to Download Free Winamp

Hi, everyone. This is going to sound lame, but I can't figure out how to
download the free version of Winamp. I go to the download page, select the
full version download which seems to be free (it's not the Pro version),
and am linked to a download confirmation page. That's where I'm stumped.
The only download links on that page are for what appear to be two songs.

Any suggestions? Also, since my immediate objective is to try to ppick up
the Lords cricket feed, which seems to require Winamp, am I right in
thinking that I need only a free version?

  Thanks.

Bruce,

Absolutely, and I should have remembered from previous postings. Related
question, which has also been asked and answered. As I recall, JAWS 8, which
I use, incorporates Winamp scripts. However, the White Stick website also
makes JAWS scripts available. Should I download those, especially for this
.34 beta?

Make things easy on yourself. Go to www.whitestick.co.uk and choose the
downloads page. You'll find the latest version there in a nice
easy-to-swallow form.

I'd sugest that you try things as they are first. The only things those
scripts will do for you is, I'm told, make the library more accessible.
Since I never use the library, I'm absolutely no authority on this
subject.

I agree, and I don't think there's a bad site. I personally prefer mikes
radioworld because I like he layout, but I do use bill's and other sites.

There's no right or wrong anser.

While those are laudible reasons to recommend Bill's site, anyone who
limits himself to Bill's (or anyone else's site, for that matter) short
 changes themselves.
And, as for ease of use, all of the sites mentioned in this thread are
just as accessible and easy to use as Bill's site.
When it comes to choices for internet streams, blind pc users have plenty
of choices of where to go.
 While going to

 www.billsparks.org

is a great first choice, I hope that if you don't come up with what you
 want there, I hope
you go to some of the other mentioned search sites.

And one other thought: sometimes on any of these sites, you may discover
a link doesn't work. This may be for any of many reasons: the station is
no longer streaming, they changed their link, they are temporarily down,
or they are not streaming a parrticular show for contractual reason.

WWhen I come upon such situations, I always check another site or 2 or 3
in the event that a link is broken.
Then, when that fails, go to the station website which Bill and many of
the other sites give you a link to.

Anyone tried Songbird yet?

2007-04-13 Thread cchaltain
Has anyone tried Songbird yet? I was optimistic when I heard about it
because I find Firefox and Thunderbird so accessible, but I didn't have
as much luck with Songbird yet. I haven't reported any accessibility
problems yet, I'm not sure where to start, but I wanted to get others
opinions and get others looking at it. Maybe it's early enough in the
development cycle that we can have an impact and help ensure the final
product is accessible.

You can get more information from http://www.songbirdnest.com/. BTW, if
I haven't mentioned it yet, Songbird is an open source media player and
more.
