 Hi there folks,

So often when we buy a portable radio and CD player these days, we
find that we can only use some of the options that are available and the
others require at least some vision to use.

Well, a friend of mine is in a rather unique position, and here's what
 he writes.

 Hi Sam,

Right now, I'd like to tell you about a couple projects I'm involved in.

The Best Buy electronics retail chain is teaming up with an electronics
manufacturer to offer a blind-friendly radio. It's just in the planning
 stages
right now. I have a contact who is involved in the talks between Best
 Buy and the
 manufacturer.

My friend would like to know the top ten things we as blind persons
 would
like to see in a radio. The first thing I said was to have a num pad on
 the
remote so we could put in a frequency. I'd also like to see a button
 that returns
all the menus and mode buttons to some pre-determined default settings
 so we
wouldn't get lost in the menus and sub menus. If the unit is going to
 have a multi-cd
changer, I'd like it to give an audible signal when the cd tray I select
 is empty
rather than automatically finding the next loaded one.

As you know, I have exactly two blind friends. But you seem to know
quite a few folks, one way or another. Would you mind asking as many
 people as you
can what they'd like to see in a blind-friendly radio and then send the
 information to me?

I will pass it along to my friend and we will actually have some say
in the design and features set rather than having the sighted design it
 for us, not
knowing at all what we need or what would be helpful. If you're on any
blindness-related lists where the question would be appropriate, feel
 free to post the
question there and forward the info to me.

Re: Fwd: Accessible Devices Opportunity To Have Input On The Design of NewRadio

2008-04-04 Thread Chris Skarstad
Hi. I think what would be really cool is to have them build
a radio, but instead of it being a specialized radio designed
specifically for the blind, which is how this sounds, what they might
be able to do is build it exactly like a regular radio ,but find some
kind of a way to enable the accessibility features. These could be
enabled and disabled at will, most likely through a button that is
clearly marked on the radio itself or the remote, if it has
one. This way, we wouldn't have to have sighted help, just to get to
the features we need.
so a blind person could use the unit just as readily as a sighted
person could. If menus are involved, I would hope that some kind of
audible clicks, or beeps, or even better, some kind of audible voice
prompts could be used, making it easier to set the time on the clock,
set up presets, tell what preset we're on, etc. I know a lot of
radios and CD players are menu based nowadays. So if the
accessibility features could be enabled and disabled, that would be a
good way to do it.

Hi Larry
The previous Jtunes was a payable upgrade - I'm not sure but I think it's
about £30. It works fairly well and certainly makes Itunes workable. It has
one or two restrictions but in general is good. The new version sounds just
what we need and so as you can see I'm keen to get it.

Re: Wireless Keyboards and Wireless Headphones

2008-04-04 Thread russell Bourgoin
Hi,

I'll vouch for the keyboard! I bought one from Jerry
several years ago now. I had a minor problem, the transmitter quit
working, but after complaining to gyration, they sent me a new one at
no charge!

I use mine in several different places, using my fm transmitter and a
radio to hear the screen, reading email in bed, controlling music
apps from the driveway, looking up phone numbers from the sunroom,
and on and on.

Rusty

I've sold quite a few of Gyration 100 foot range RF Wireless keyboards
with only two or three minor complaints. It cost's $199.
For headphones I've been using Advent AW-770 for seven years. They are
rated at 100 feet also but I've never got more than 30.

Hi Peter and all,

I use notepad to do this, along with the windows tool,
sendto, one of the windows toys. Send to is added to your context
menu, so, when you right click on a file you'd like in a playlist,
choose send to and then clipboard as name. Press enter and the
entire filename goes to your clipboard. Now just press control-v in
an open notepad window, and the entire filename appears in your
document. Save the file, when completed, to a filename with a pls or
m3u extention and there you have it. I hope this helped!

Hi. I think what would be really cool is to have them build
a radio, but instead of it being a specialized radio designed
specifically for the blind, which is how this sounds, what they might
be able to do is build it exactly like a regular radio ,but find some

So if the
accessibility features could be enabled and disabled, that would be a
 good way to do it.

goldwave part 7 tutorial

2008-04-04 Thread Rick Harmon
Hi Everyone,

Just finished up a 30 minute goldwave part 7 tutorial. It covers zoom levels
where I describe exactly what it means and how it effects the markers and the
play cursor. I show how to use the J, K, L keys to play rapidly or slowly
forward and backwards through a file. I also talk about new key shortcuts for
the markers so you can quickly move them while editing. I also talk about the
keys used to play audio 3 seconds before either marker and how to play audio
forward from either marker. And finally I talk about the tutorial mode in the
newest scripts for GW.

This is the first part that covers accessibility options being added from the
developers of GW. So more to come as more is added and as I learn more about
using all the new features.

I don't know if this would be possible, but it might be good if they look at
developing the technology with a view to easily transporting it to other
 electronic devices.
I would rather someone work on a accessible DVD player, or TV set top box,
 or audio apmplifier/tuner.

CDex Question

2008-04-04 Thread Dan Kerstetter
I've configured CDex to rip at 320 using a lame encoder; however, when I rip
the files, the size of one of the tracks, for instance, is 48 Megs.

I end up with an album too large to be compressed with any good results.

I would appreciate any information on how to correct this problem.

Thanks.

While I rip much of my material at Windows Audio Lossless, I've learned it
makes little difference with many recording produced prior to the 80's.

Hi Dan,

MP3 files ripped at 320 kBPS should be approximately 2.3 MB per minute in
size, so if you have a track of 48 MB, it should be about
21 minutes in length. If it is, there is nothing you can do about it other
than to rip at a lower bit rate. I find 192 to be acceptable, but some
would argue that it isn't.

Barry Chapman
