2008-04-25 Thread Steve Pattison
Easy CD-DA Extractor version 11.5.1 is now available and one place where you
can download it from is at www.poikosoft.com. Here are the changes both in
this version and a previous minor release that was released between version
11.5 and version 11.5.1:

11.5.1
Problem in WMA decoding fixed
Updated Spanish, Swedish, French, Polish, Arabic, Chinese, and Romanian language
files

(11.5 R2)
Changed AccurateCDDA default reading options to more compatible with all drives.
(all drives couldn't handle large block requests).

I just bought an audiobook in Windows Protected Media format which I
intend to convert to MP3 so I can put it on a portable player that
does not handle WMA protected media. The thing I usually do when I
have Windows Protected Media files is to turn each file into a .WAV
file by burning it to a CD, then ripping it to the desired MP3. The
problem I have with this, of course, is that I have to waste as many
CD's as there are files in the set for the book! OK, I could probably
get away with not doing this by using rewritable discs, but at this
time I have none of those, and many hundred non-rewritables. But even
though I have more non-rewritables than I'll need, I want to be green
about it and not have to throw away four perfectly good discs just
because I don't need them any more. Is there a way to convert
directly from protected WMA to either WAV or MP3 without actually
having to physically create the intermediate CD?

Re: using Total Recorder 7 with software speech

2008-04-25 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
High Dean,
Perhaps Microsoft pulls the plug on Windows XP, what then?
Do we all get up and go out to buy a computer that has Vista on it to do
audio editing as will as making recordings?
There is a lot of software out there that will inter face with Windows XP
without any problems.
Mean while, these same peaces of software have many problems inter facing
with Vista.
Total Recorder is 1 of them I read about in PC World that has this recurring
problem with Vista.
Ladies and gentle men, this is something to think about before you get a
Vista system.

Subject: RE: using Total Recorder 7 with software speech

Mike has provided an excellent framework for a comparison between Total
Recorder and Replay A/V. I'll intersperse comments after his features,
which are unquestioned plusses for Replay A/v.
 (1) ability to record a stream prior to its reaching the sound card.
This is the biggie; Total Recorder doesn't do it, and it is this that
 allows
Replay A/V to work in Vista as well as it works in xp, whereas Total
Recorder worksin Vista, but even with Window-Eyes and its ability to
 select
sound cards, not as well as it did in xp.

 (2) ability to record multiple streams simultaneiously and on a recurring
 schedule.
 Both products will do this.

 (3) A feature allowing one to use RAV both as a recorder and a radio
 tuner independently and simultaneously.
I don't think TR can do this.

 (4) An url finder feature allowing one to uncover stream urls that are
often embedded in complex urls. To me, this would be well worth the $50
or so price tag for the product.

Another plus for Replay; Total Recorder has such a reature but I haven't
found it to be very accessible.

 (5) A built-in file converter which can be set to automatically convert
recorded streams into the desired media format.
 Both programs can do this.

 (6) An easy to use interface which follows conventional Windows menu
 structure.
 Both are strong here.

 (7) Each scheduled entry can be individually managed for file conversion,
how long recordings are maintained, and with the ability to edit tags.
 Again, both are good.

 (8) A wide variety of general program settings including the
customization of names of created files. These general settings include
the ability to determine how the program will handle stream interruptions
and how many times to attempt reconnects.
 Again, both are good
Additional thoughts: I just prefer Total Recorder, if it would work, but
 it
won't with Vista. I find, on an xp system, I have fewer problems with
 Replay A/V recordings.

Mike says he uses another program sometimes because Replay can't bring the
computer out of hibernation. I regularly have Replay A/V bring the
 computer
out of hibernation to make a recording.

Total Recorder has some other recording features and some avail add-ons,
 but
at this point, I would not buy it unless you know you'll never migrate to
Vista. Replay A/V solves one of Vista's biggest disadvantages, that being
 its crippled recording features.

 Dean

Re: using Total Recorder 7 with software speech

2008-04-25 Thread Mike Pietruk
John

Worrying about MSFT pulling off support for XP, at this time, is a bit
premature as this won't occur for years. Keep in mind that XP systems are
still being sold, at a minimu through June 30 of this year, by major
manufacturers such as Dell (just received a souped-up XP laptop from them
this week).
As for the audio problems relative to Vista, time will likely cure these
issues thanks to both MSFT and 3rd parties.
So while for now we may prefer sticking with XP for audio needs, one day
this will change as advancements march on.
RAV, from what I understand, is now fully Vista compliant and TR has
released a Vista compatible version of their software.
Give this another year or so and remaining issues will be addressed as the
marketplace will insist on this.

It also depends on how comfortable you are with different ways of doing
things. Sound Forge and Gold Wave, for example, employ vastly different
editing techniques. Some people find Gold Wave's method to be easier and
can't get their minds around Sound Forge's method, and some find Sound
forge's method to be easier to deal with than Gold Wave. Ability doesn't
enter into it here, it's strictly a preference thing, though advocates on
both sides will often disagree with this last statement.

And goldwaves added accesibility features seem to be starting to perhaps
give an advantage to goldwave users now as some are saying SF 9 is getting
some what less accessible in ways.

High Josh,
To answer the questions in the order you asked them in, they're good for
3000 cleanings.
No, they are just like popping in a regular CD.
My best regards.

 Hi,
I guess I'll have to buy one then. How long do those lazer lense cleaning
discs last? and do they run some kind of special program to clean the
 lazer?
I'm due for a new computer anyway, this one's getting old and it only has
 USB1 on it.

 Hello Josh,
From time to time, the lacer lens in those things will need to be
cleaned.
I had a CD ROM drive that wouldn't burn CD's.
Some CD's, it wouldn't play either.
I only had it for more then 2 years.
But when I put a lacer lens cleaning disc in it, I didn't have those
 problems any more.
Maybe you should try that and see if that solves your problem.
 My best regards.
  John.

 Hi,
Ok my computer is about 6 years old. I got it in 2002. it's a dell. When
 I
put dvds in to play, sometimes they play and sometimes they don't. And I
don't know why. I have a lidian dvd rom drive. I just put a dvd in to
 play
it and the drive spins for a little like it's trying to recognise the
 drive
or the disc in the drive then just stops. I also tried holding down
 shift
while I closed the drive tray and still nothing. But the dvd played a
 few
days ago. I think it's time for a new computer soon, unless someone
 elsehas
 another opinion or ideas?

Re: using Total Recorder 7 with software speech

Dean,

I thought it could record streams without them going through the sound card
in version 7?

 Dean

sound card headset microphone

2008-04-25 Thread Josh
Hi,

Where can I get a headset microphone that has two cables, one for input and
one for output for use with a sound card? similar to the USB mic but it
plugs into the sound card using two cables instead. I want to use stereo-mix
on skype and other programs.

County Cricket audio streams

2008-04-25 Thread Stephen Jolley
Hi Ketan,

Below this message is a link to my page which you may like to keep in your
favourites list.

On this page under the United Kingdom heading, there is a level 2 heading of
Cricket. There, you can find a link to the BBC Cricket page which brings up
links to any live county action that is happening that day.

Good Luck.
