Re: Recording quality of victor reader xtreme

2008-10-09 Thread constantine (on laptop)

Hi,

I'm about to upload some various clips to sendspace to show you how it
sounds for different things. (close up, what happens when things get too
loud, what happens when things're far away, etc).

It'll mostly be with engines- its not ideal but it works well enough.

Hi all

I hhave some questions regarding the victor reader xtreme especially
regarding it's recording quality.

This is probably one of the best pieces of technology to come out in a
long time.

But can it be used effectively as a recorder for lectures and
conferences? And will an external microphone make a significant
difference in the recording quality of this machine?

Would you be able to compare the recording quality with e.g. something
like the olympus recorders?

I have a serious hearing impairment so sound quality is of great
importance to me.

I cannot seem to find any sample recordings of this machine anywhere.
There are some good reviews though.

Andre

Sample of Victor Stream Notes recording

2008-10-09 Thread Rays Home
Here as promised is a short sample of a recording made at a training session
around aural history. Not made under ideal conditions as there's a fair amount
of traffic noise coming through an open window. It was a hot evening.

Victor notes recording.mp3

File will be stored for: 7 days Link to file:

A rather reverbrant room too but the main speaker is picked up fine being some
three or four feet away. the other speaker a good deal further off.

I've done a straight transfer to Sound Forge with just normalising to -10 db
speech. Comprssion could be applied to even out volumes.

Hope it is of some help as an example.

RE: information on the plextalk pocket

2008-10-09 Thread André van Deventer
For me this is not such an issue so far.

But to get hold of such a unit is a problem.

I wrote to irti and they told me they cannot sell to me outside the US.

I have a vendor of assistive devices who is quite willing to import the
unit for me, but we cannot get any reaction from the manufacturers about
this!

Anyone knows where we might be able to obtain such a unit internationally?

Hi Bruce

Quite understandable thanks. For those on the list, I suppose there would
be quite a difference in sound quality between e.g. the victor reader xtreme

Yes I know you cannot really cojmpare the two machines but I am simply
curious. In my situation where recording quality of a conference or meeting
is important, would it perhaps be better to go for a more dedicated
recorder?

Hope I'm not confusing anyone!!

I agree with what Bruce and others have said about the recording quality of
the Stream. Remember that, unlike the Edirol and similar recorders it
sin'isn't stereo and the quality is much less. It is very adequate for
speech recording though as long as you aren't way back in an audience and
reasonably close in.

Considering the high level of reduction used the quality is very good with
the background hiss being a little more than on a high quality machine.

I've not used an external mic but get the feeling that a mic with a high
output would be needed.

I could possibly upload a sample of a recording made with the Stream if
anyone's interested and if I untangle the nest of leads to do it!

Cheers,
Ray.

The Stream can play many more formats, including Audible, OGG Vorbis,

believe it is also a little cheaper.

RE: Recording quality of victor reader xtreme

2008-10-09 Thread André van Deventer
Hi Bruce

Quite understandable thanks. For those on the list, I suppose there would
be quite a difference in sound quality between e.g. the victor reader xtreme
and the edirol recorders?

Yes I know you cannot really cojmpare the two machines but I am simply
curious. In my situation where recording quality of a conference or meeting
is important, would it perhaps be better to go for a more dedicated
recorder?

Hope I'm not confusing anyone!!

Andre

I have never used an external mike with the Stream, so I can't say. I'm
guessing that it would depend on the quality of your mike, but that's just a
guess. I don't want to make a statement I can't back up.

Yes, if the manual is online it would be better to post the
link. Jim did post the manual to the list but it was
rejected because it is over a meg in size and the list only
allows messages up to forty KB. Otherwise maybe he can post
it to an FTP site.

Thanks,

While the quality of the recording isn't what I would call studio quality,
it is remarkably good for its size and for the price, given that the Stream

Recording quality of victor reader xtreme

2008-10-09 Thread André van Deventer
Hi all

I hhave some questions regarding the victor reader xtreme especially
regarding it's recording quality.

This is probably one of the best pieces of technology to come out in a long
time.

But can it be used effectively as a recorder for lectures and conferences?
And will an external microphone make a significant difference in the
recording quality of this machine?

Would you be able to compare the recording quality with e.g. something like
the olympus recorders?

I have a serious hearing impairment so sound quality is of great importance
to me.

I cannot seem to find any sample recordings of this machine anywhere. There
are some good reviews though.

Andre

My question, do I need to know if the person has plus or minus on there

DVD plus or minus, MP3 question

2008-10-09 Thread stever2525

This is not about movies, just MP3s.
My DVD drive is compatible for both plus and minus formats. I want to make a
surprise gift for a friend of MP3 files on a DVD disc.

When purchasing, I have to choose between the plus or minus format.
My question, do I need to know if the person has plus or minus on there PC,
or does it matter with mp3s. I am trying to resolve any compatibility
issues, thank you.

Yes, I would be very interested in this one if recording quality is high
via mics.

Hope someone in the UK will give us a shout as to when it's available
here.

Ray.

Wonder if the recording quality will be the same as the ptr 2?
