 Hi all

A friend of mine has a very strange problem with her new laptop.

She uses a xitel device to play music from her laptop through a high
quality stereo system. When she connects this device to her laptop
while on battery power, everything is fine and the sound is clear.
However, as soon as she connects the power chord of her laptop, a lot
of noise is generated through her speakers. She had another laptop
before which was stolen, and it worked fine.

She has already tried to connect the laptop to a different power
outlet and also tried to move the xitel further away from the laptop
with a USB extension cable without any luck.

Any advice from all you knowledgeable folks?

 Andre

I am wanting to record from the line output of an amplifier onto my ASUS
Eee 1000H notebook. The notebook only has a microphone in
socket, so if I use a standard lead, it overloads. I have only tried it
with Sound Recorder so far, but will install other
recording software if I can fix the input problem.

Does anyone know where I can get a resistance lead which drops the output
level to that suitable to connect to a microphone input?
I have tried the equivalent of Radio Shack here in Australia, but without
success so far. If I can't get a lead, perhaps I can
purchase a USB sound card with line in.

Has anyone tried recording on an ASUS Eee 100h with Sound Forge or
Goldwave, and if so, were you successful?

Thanks,
Barry Chapman

RE: Friend Needs Help With Sound Card

Oh dear! I think that's kind of what we were afraid would be the case.
We'll have to talk to our friend. Sheesh! What a pity! She wants to

there any way at all she could at least use this card for that? She's a

She does hear the beep when pressing the control key but no one can hear
her. Sheesh! Is this really hopeless as it sounds?

Thanks again.

Please forgive the cross post, but we are trying to help a young lady
with a sound card we don't know anything about, and are hoping to find

someone on one of these two lists who might be able to assist.

. It is the Soundmax HD Audio card, and came with her Dell desktop
computer. She knows little about the machine, but would like to
 participate in audio chats.

We are working by phone and she is in another city/State, so we're
 flying blind, no pun intended.
We have followed all the usual procedures for a Windows sound card,
but so far nothing is obvious. We believe the mic is muted, and can't

figure out how to unmute it. There are two checkboxes whose checked
or unchecked status we don't understand, and there appears to be a
rear speaker recording capability as well. There appear to be jacks
both on the front and rear, and she's not sure which is which. She
says the mic was plugged in at Wal-Mart, but she has not attempted to
do anything with it herself. Dave did have her check the mic and
uncheck the rear speaker, but this did no good. She had sound coming
out of her speakers, but Dave was able to help her silence it.

This is all the information I can offer, so hope it will be enough to
give this lady some help. It appears she received the computer system

 with little instruction.

 Thanks in advance.

Hello Andre,
Did you try moving the power supply as far away from the stereo as you
possibly can?
  John.

Hi John

We had the power supply as far from the laptop as we could from the
beginning.

I still think that the problem probably lies with a power supply that is not
properly shielded.

Andre

Hello Andre,
Did you try relocating the power supply?
I'm asking because if you put a power supply on top of an amplifier, it will
make all of those noises.
My best regards!
  John.

Hi John

It seems to be a computer-like sound. Like the sound you get from a fax
machine or when any kind of receiver picks up the sound from a computer.

Hello,
Is it some kind of a humming noise or it is a bussing sound?
Either way, it is all coming from the power supply.
If the power supply is weak and doesn't have enough amps of currant, that
thing will make a lot of noise with USB audio devices.
Call or go by the store and see if they will upgrade the power supply for
you.
My best regards!
  John.

Hi

This is one of the new Acer laptops. She had an HP before and had no such
problems. It also sounds to me like a power supply problem.

Hello,
The problem may be with the power supply itself.
If the power supply isn't regulated properly, it will make a lot of noise
through your sound system.
Where did she get this lab top from?
You and or her may wish to start there and see if they will replace her
power supply with a better one.
My best regards!
  John.

 Hi all

A friend of mine has a very strange problem with her new laptop.

She uses a xitel device to play music from her laptop through a high
quality stereo system. When she connects this device to her laptop
while on battery power, everything is fine and the sound is clear.
However, as soon as she connects the power chord of

John,

Just so I understand, this card won't work for simple VOIP? Seems hard
to believe there wouldn't be some way around it. Dave had been hoping
the person at Wal-Mart might have had the jacks mis-wired. This lady
knows nothing of computers, so he couldn't test his theory without her
moving cords, which she didn't seem to want to do.We were trying to
help out after she was unable to get into the chat on the ACB Radio
Tuesday Topics show in the ACB Radio Politics Room with Talkcom. We
probably should say she's
an acquaintance, and all we know is what we know. sigh Please
understand I'm not doubting you, but rather our possible inability to
communicate that the lady simply wants to work VOIP. Or is this what
you mean by monitoring live chats?

I think maybe it's time to suggest someone go over and check it out
hands on. If there's no way around the issue it will be up to her
whether she wants to invest in a sound card, as it appears she received
the computer under the auspices of Florida rehab. sigh

Hello Pam,
No, I have tried and couldn't do it with SOUND MAX: I couldn't get it to
work for me either.
So I installed an internal sound card so that I can monitor my
recordings and live chats.
I am so sorry, there is no other way to work around that.
My best regards!
  John.

Oh dear! I think that's kind of what we were afraid would be the
case.
We'll have to talk to our friend. Sheesh! What a pity! She wants to

participate in ACB Radio's Tuesday Topics and probably other chats.
Is there any way at all she could at least use this card for that?
She's a real computer newbie, and may not want to do anything
sophisticated.
She does hear the beep when pressing the control key but no one can
hear her. Sheesh! Is this really hopeless as it sounds?

 Thanks again.

 Pam

 Hello Pam,
SOUND MAX is not a good sound card.
My DELL system has one in it too as well.
I don't use mine anymore because you can't monitor the live recordings

 and or live chats.
She can either use an internal sound card or an external USB sound
card.
SOUND BLASTER would be a good place to start.
 http://www.soundblaster.com
 is the web address.
 My best regards!
 John.

Please forgive the cross post, but we are trying to help a young lady

with a sound card we don't know anything about, and are hoping to
 find

someone on one of these two lists who might be able to assist.

We believe the mic is muted, and
 can't

figure out how to unmute it.

It appears she received the computer
 system
 with little instruction.

 Thanks in advance.

 Pam
