Hi Hank,

to search by genre, you can use search terms such as genre:rock and
genre:classical. Note spelling of genre.

DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION

2010-03-12 Thread DJ DOCTOR P
Hello List members,
I just received a new digital talking book player in the mail.
I have a few questions about it.
For starters, this machine can play files from a USB flash drive.
What kind of format will those files need to be in an order for this machine to
play them?
I haven't tried this yet, but can this thing play in stereo?
It has a monaural speaker built in to it.
But I'm asking about its headphone jack.
I have seen some digital playback equipment that had mono speakers built in to
them before.
But when you plug a pare of headphones in to them, the sound came out in stereo.
Is this digital talking book player one of those machines that can do this?
Thinks in advance.
My best regards.
  John.
PS. Where is a good website to download digital talking books?

They use an encrypted format for the books. The headphone jack is stereo.
This will play mp3 and wave formats for audio.

Same hardware and as far as I know there is no appreciable difference in the
recording portion of the software so your answer to your first question
would be the same. second answer would be yes, it will record from the line
out of something. In otherwords it can do a line in recording.

you can play one book at a time on a memery stick type device.

I am currently listening on the nls unit a mp3 book that is not

This is indeed true according to the documentation, but I've had my DTBM
play MP3's that were not in the Audio+Podcasts directory. I found this
out when I plugged in the same flash stick into my DTBM that I was using
to transfer files to my netbook, and I couldn't tell where it was
getting those MP3's from. Note this may be an undocumented feature or a
defect, so don't count on it.

Subject: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION

Hello List members,
I just received a new digital talking book player in the mail.
I have a few questions about it.
For starters, this machine can play files from a USB flash drive.
What kind of format will those files need to be
in an order for this machine to play them?

I haven't tried this yet, but can this thing play in stereo?
It has a monaural speaker built in to it.
But I'm asking about its headphone jack.
I have seen some digital playback equipment
that had mono speakers built in to them before.
But when you plug a pare of headphones in to
them, the sound came out in stereo.

Is this digital talking book player one of those machines that can do this?
Thinks in advance.
My best regards.
 John.
PS. Where is a good website to download digital talking books?

if you want to play mp3's on it you need to have the files in a

folder on
the flash disc called audeo+podcasts. it won't read the names of

the files

it will number them.

you can play one book at a time on a memery stick type device.

I am currently listening on the nls unit a mp3 book that is not

nls
formatted and it can qet quirky as it never seems to play the

entire
grouping of files but rather, goes through about 2 thirds the

files. Not
sure why this is but i end up having to delete the earlier

chapters and

the darn thing works!
Not sure about stereo, havent check that out.

RE: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION

2010-03-12 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi John.

The player will play 3gp, wav and mp3 files. I'm thinking of those three
right off, I may be forgetting one, though. These files need to be in a
folder called audio+podcasts which is on the root of the drive. You can put
subfolders under this to organize them. The player won't announce the
folders, but when you're in bookshelf mode you'll be able to navigate to
them.

As for playing files in stereo, this may or may not be true. I say this,
because earlier firmware updates to the player didn't play files in stereo.
You need to have version 2.1 or later of the firmware, and it will play
files in stereo. To find out your player's version, with no media in it,
press the sleep button ten times quickly until you hear the serial number
being announced. Once this announcement starts, just wait, and you'll hear
the version of your player's firmware announced. My player has version
2.1.3 of the firmware on it.

To download NLS books for your player, you need to be signed up with the NLS
site. To do this, go to

https://nlsbard.loc.gov

and click on the link on that page. Since you have an NLS player, you'll be
able to get this service. It's nice to download books from the site, and
anything you get on a cartridge from your library will be on the NLS site.

By the way, you may want to call your local library and tell them you want
digital books on cartridge sent to you. I had to do this for myself, and in
fact I had to call them again to jolt things into action. I should be
getting my first NLS book from my library any day now.

There is an email list that is specificly set up for the NLS player. You
can find out how to subscribe to it, as well as have some of your questions
answered. Go to

http://bardtalk.com

If you have any other questions, let me know.

Same hardware and as far as I know there is no appreciable difference in the
recording portion of the software so your answer to your first question
would be the same. second answer would be yes, it will record from the line
out of something. In otherwords it can do a line in recording.

the Bookport Plus record from a line-out source?

OK, so the Plextalk Pocket and the new Bookport Plus feel the same when held
in the hand? Is that what they mean about the same hardware, or do they mean
the same pressable keys? I don't quite understand.

Thanks a lot.

Getting sound out of You Tube

2010-03-12 Thread Morey Worthington

Hello all.
Using Win/Vista with a Real Tech sound card and Jaws 11. I am using speakers
as the output device and a desktop microphone.

I have the newest versions of JAVA and Flash as of 2 days ago.
If I get a URL for You Tube and it to be music played upon entering, there
is no sound at all.

Where may I be having a incorrect setting?
Went to Google for help, got some tips, but still no help.
Thoughts?
If so, please do so off list cause this might not be of interest for many.
Thanks,
Morey Worthington
