update on multi track recorder with speech guidance

2011-12-21 Thread Colin Howard
Greetings,

this certainly sounds very interesting.

Olympus is releasing an 8 track digital recorder, at the beginning
of February 2012. The unit features voice guidance for all menus. It
includes two built in condenser microphones, as well as two balanced
combination XLR quarter inch inputs for high quality microphones, or to
connect a mixing board. The built in microphones can handle sound pressure
levels up to 140 decibals, so it will record live bands with clarity and no
distortion. The LS100 also has an output to connect it to a CD drive, and
it will enable you to mix down its 8 tracks, to a 2 track stereo mix. It
wil record in 24 bit 96K resolution. This is the preliminary information I
received from Olympus Japan. The suggested selling price will be $399.

If you are a member of any list serves enabling communication with other
blind musicians or blind engineers, please pass the word on, about the new
Olympus LS100. Keep in mind, I'm not an Olympus sales representative, I
have been in contact with Olympus product engineers in order to develop this
8 track digital recorder, with speech guidance for blind users. If you have
any other questions, just keep in touch.

Fwd: Accessible Software from DVDVideoSoft

2011-12-21 Thread Steve Pattison

From: David Goldfield dgold...@asb.org
To: n...@freelists.org

Just got this press release which not only may be of interest to some of
you

but which also mentions NVDA.
DVDVideoSoft Programs are Fully Accessible for People with Visual
Impairments
DVDVideoSoft has updated YouTube software and now it features compatibility
with screen reading software (screen readers) that is widely used among
blind and disabled people.
(PRWEB) December 02, 2011
DVDVideoSoft, a leading free software developer who thinks highly of every
user, made its software compatible with screen readers, special software
applications that attempt to identify and interpret what is being displayed
on the screen. Today DVDVideoSoft releases new updates for YouTube software
which includes special compatibility mode for such software.
Some months ago DVDVideoSoft redesigned the most popular programs from the
list of 40+ tools included in Free Studio. All YouTube downloading software
featured a new interface that appeared to be of no use for blind, visually
impaired people who use screen reading software to work with computers. So,
based on core principle of following users' needs, the staff arrived at the
decision to make the software fully accessible for the people with visual
impairments.
Thereby, a new option has been embedded in all YouTube downloading
software.

Now it is possible with one click to enable compatibility with screen
reading software in the Options menu of the main program window.
The new functionality was tested with NVDA screen readers. Thus all users
can enjoy using DVDVideoSoft software again without any limitation.
Moreover, the company has slightly simplified YouTube software interface
and

proved itself again as a developer of free, simple and user friendly
software. Due to thoroughly elaborated interface all extensive
functionality

is accessible and comprehensive for advanced users as for neophytes.
DVDVideoSoft company's representative, Alex Wang comments: First of all we
must thank our users for their feedback that we get soon after new releases
and updates. It helps us react quickly and eliminate all difficulties our
users are confronted with. The most important thing is that now absolutely
all users have the possibility to enjoy not only the new interface of our
programs, but all new functions embedded in redesigned YouTube software.
There are no more obstacles for it.
All-in-one package Free Studio includes all recent updates which can be
downloaded from official web site http://www.dvdvideosoft.com.

RE: BW MM-1 speakers

2011-12-21 Thread Adrian Spratt
It's a subjective judgment, I know, but I find the BW MM-1 speakers much
superior to the Bose I have, which I disconnected and put away as soon as I
heard the MM-1 quality. They're clear, the sound is full, the bass is
balanced, and I hear words and musical moments I hadn't heard before.

Installation was easy, and I needed no sighted assistance. The toggle
control for on/stand-by is located on the left side of the power speaker. It
isn't a button and it isn't recessed, but it sits between the upper and
lower bands of cloth that circle the speaker. Similar controls appear on the
right for lowering and raising the volume. To lower the volume, press the
forward part of the horizontal band between the cloth, and to raise volume
press the partner the back.

As I understand it, the speakers bypass the PC's sound card, which surely
helps maintain their quality.

BW uses lit-up color codes on the power speaker to indicate various states.
Red indicates off, blue on, slow-flashing blue stand-by. When connected to
the PC for a firmware upgrade, the light switches to white.

With this set, I find that the speakers turn off when the computer is turned
off. The light turns to red. When I want to restore sound after the computer
has rebooted, I need to take out and then reinsert the USB connection, then
press the side of the power speaker to turn it on. When this operation
succeeds, my system issues a confirming beep.

Here's my reservation. The power speaker gets hot. I have it in a desk
cabinet, but I've made sure it has plenty of space around it. Still, I'm
sufficiently concerned that I routinely turn them off when I'm not listening
to anything. I should have kept my Bose connected because I now lose JAWS's
and MS's sound alerts. The Bose connected through the regular audio
terminals at the back of my Dell, not a USB connection.

The only BW update currently available for the speakers appears to have no
real value for me. As I understand it, it keeps the speakers on standby
during a reboot. On reflection, I prefer they go off completely, other than
receiving power from the power cord (which does not cause the heat problem).
IF BW ever replies to my request for assistance with regard to updating,
I'll post their suggestion.

I suggest you read the reviews at Amazon.com for more customer reactions:
http://www.amazon.com/Bowers-Wilkins-Multimedia-computer-speaker/dp/B003R6U6
HG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1322861412sr=8-1
The reviews at Amazon.co.uk are also helpful. At the time I was buying, it
was two customers there who talked about the heat problem. Like me, at least
one customer reported concerns about BW's tech support.

A note for US consumers. When I purchased the MM-1s two weeks ago, Amazon
was selling it at $499 through JR. I used another seller on that same page,
Geminigadget, which offered the speakers at $50 less, with shipping
included. The speakers arrived in three days.

Except for the update issue, are they really worth the extra cost do you
think? Do they sound better than other speakers?

According to the literature they do sound easy to operate.

Replying to my own post, I've figured out how to get the speakers restarted.
It took the proverbial sighted assistant to observe the color changes that
indicate progress, but once we figured that part out, I understood how to do
it without help. If anyone is interested, I'll give details. Meanwhile, I'm
still perplexed about how to make the MM-1 Updater produce results.

A posting on this list alerted me to these speakers, and comments on Amazon
spoke glowingly. They make a wonderful sound. However, I tried in vain to
use the MM-1 firmware to update them, and now not only are they not updated;
they don't even work. I've written twice to BW via their website, but I've
received no response.

does anyone have suggestions?

foobar and assigning keys for stop and play and things like that

2011-12-21 Thread Casey
Hi I would like to give foobar 2000 a try for playing MP3 files and the
like.

But I would like to be able to have it be kind of like win amp.
Where you can stop and play and have some control over those features
and even a pause feature would be nice as well.

So how do you make this happen?
Also how can you make foobar open to just a foobar window and not the
play list window that it opens with bye default?

Or is this what it is supposed to do?

To set up a keyboard short cut, you can do the following:

 1) Start FooBar2000 and use control-p to bring up Preferences.

 2) Arrow down to Keyboard Shorcuts.

 3) If you tab over about 5 times, you'll end up on the list of the
 keyboard shortcuts already defined.
Arrowing down this list will select the different keyboard shortcuts and
give you the chance to edit them.

 4) Probably the first thing you want to do is tab over once more to the
Add New button. clicking on this button will add a keyboard shortuct to
your list of keyboard shortcuts with none of the values set.

 5) Shift-tab back to the list of keyboard shortcuts and arrow down to
the bottom of the list. You should hear an entry that has three values
not set. Make sure you do this step or you could potentially be editing
a shortcut you didn't intend to change. I'm speaking from experience here.

 6) Tab over about three times and you'll end up on the list of all of
the functions you could associate with a shortcut key. For example,
you'll have options like volume up, volume down, seek ahead by 30
seconds and seek back by 2 minutes. This list is huge, so you can tab
over twice to the filter field and type in something like seek or
volume to get just those items that have that string in them. After
entering a string in the filter field, shift-tab twice to get back to
the subset of functions containing just that string.

 7) Select the function you want to associate with a shortcut key and tab
over once. This is where it gets a little tricky. You'll hear a more
detailed description of the function you selected, but you're really in
an edit field where you're going to choose the key you want to associate
with this function. Be careful here, if you hit the space bar than the
space bar will be associated with whatever function you selected.
Suppose you chose the function volume mute and then you associated the
space bar with this function. Now whenever you hit the space bar in
FooBar2000, the volume will be muted, even when you're typing in the
title of a track. FooBar2000 will warn you when you try to associate a
common place key, such as up, down, left, right, space, ..., with a
 function.

 8) There's a box where it you can make this a global key. I haven't used
this option, but I assume this will let you use that keyboard shortcut
even when FooBar2000 doesn't have the focus. Again, be careful here.

 9) After setting up a shortcut key you can then arrow over to the list
of shortcut keys to change or review anything you've done. Once you have
the keys set up you want then just tab over to the Close button and
 you're done.

 10) After you've set up some keys, like seek ahead, seek back, volume
up, volume down, ..., go ahead and give them a spin. If you don't like
them, you can always go back and change them. One thing I haven't taken
the time to do is figure out how to have those keys passed straight
through to FooBar2000. So for example, I'll often have to use insert-3
in JFW to have the next key passed through to FooBar2000.

I hope this helps. If anyone has any other specific questions, just ask.

The built in microphones can handle sound
pressure
levels up to 140 decibals, so it will record live bands with clarity and
no
distortion. The LS100 also has an output to connect it to a CD drive,
and

it will enable you to mix down its 8 tracks, to a 2 track stereo mix. It
wil record in 24 bit 96K resolution. This is the preliminary information
I

received from Olympus Japan. The suggested selling price will be $399.

If you are a member of any list serves enabling communication with other
blind musicians or blind engineers, please pass the word on, about the
new

Olympus LS100. Keep in mind, I'm not an Olympus sales representative, I
have been in contact with Olympus product engineers in order to develop
this
8 track digital recorder, with speech guidance for blind users. If you
have

any other questions, just keep in touch.

Here are the details on this Olympus LS-100, although there is no
mention here of speech output:

Olympus has announced the latest addition to its popular LS series of
digital recorders with the addition of the LS-100 linear PCM audio
recorder. Aimed at musicians and audio enthusiasts, it comes with a
combination of professional interconnects, high quality sound recording,
multitracking and extra features in a convenient pocket size.

Olympus LS-100 Audio Recorder
It’s an impressive little device with a matching list of features
- two internal 90-degree directional stereo condenser microphones with a
frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and capable of capturing sound
pressure levels up to 140 dB (which is about as loud as you’d really
want to get).
- uncompressed 24 bit/96 kHz Linear PCM digital recording saved to the
internal 4GB memory or on SD (up to 2GB) / SDHC (up to 32GB) / SDXC (up
to 64GB) cards.

- separate audio and system circuitry to keep the signal clean.
- low cut filter at either 100 Hz or 300 Hz to eliminate low frequency
background noise.
- two quarter-inch XLR / standard phone combo jacks, supporting phantom
power at 48/24 volts to power high-quality external microphones.

- 8 track multitracking, with independent volume and pan control.
- tuner and metronome.
- Lissajous measurement which shows the phase difference betweenthe left
and right mics.

- direct CD mastering.
- 2″ LCD screen and all-metal body.
“The Olympus LS series has been a favourite of musicians, artists and
music lovers, and the LS-100 is an evolution in this series designed
with the working musician, specifically, in mind,” said Amy Leslie, Sr.
Marketing Business Development Manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc.
“For songwriting sessions, band rehearsals, live performances,
broadcasting, or really anything that requires the highest quality of
audio recording, the LS-100 is an ideal, all-encompassing recording
solution.”
Nevermind all that, it just looks cool. Full details on the LS-100 are
here and it will be available from all good stores in February 2012 for
$399.

Cool! They are going totally pro. We'll just have to weight and see
if this thing will spit phantom power. IF it does, that's way cool.
A pro recorder that's totally accessable. Cool.

Olympus is releasing an 8 track digital recorder, at the beginning
of February 2012. The unit features voice guidance for all menus. It
includes two built in condenser microphones, as well as two balanced
combination XLR quarter inch inputs for high quality microphones, or
to connect a mixing board. The built in microphones can handle sound
pressure levels up to 140 decibals, so it will record live bands
with clarity and no distortion. The LS100 also has an output to
connect it to a CD drive, and it will enable you to mix down its 8
tracks, to a 2 track stereo mix. It wil record in 24 bit 96K
resolution. This is the preliminary information I received from
Olympus Japan. The suggested selling price will be $399.

If you are a member of any list serves enabling communication with
other blind musicians or blind engineers, please pass the word on,
about the new Olympus LS100. Keep in mind, I'm not an Olympus sales
representative, I have been in contact with Olympus product
engineers in order to develop this
8 track digital recorder, with speech guidance for blind users. If
 you have any other

get).
- uncompressed 24 bit/96 kHz Linear PCM digital recording saved to the internal
4GB memory or on SD (up to 2GB) / SDHC (up to 32GB) / SDXC (up to 64GB) cards.

- low cut filter at either 100 Hz or 300 Hz to eliminate low frequency
background noise.
- two quarter-inch XLR / standard phone combo jacks, supporting phantom power
at 48/24 volts to power high-quality external microphones.
- 8 track multitracking, with independent volume and pan control.
- tuner and metronome.
- Lissajous measurement which shows the phase difference betweenthe left and
right mics.
- direct CD mastering.
- 2″ LCD screen and all-metal body.
“The Olympus LS series has been a favourite of musicians, artists and music
lovers, and the LS-100 is an evolution in this series designed with the working
musician, specifically, in mind,” said Amy Leslie, Sr.
Marketing Business Development Manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc.
“For songwriting sessions, band rehearsals, live performances, broadcasting, or
really anything that requires the highest quality of audio recording, the

Nevermind all that, it just looks cool. Full details on the LS-100 are here and
it will be available from all good stores in February 2012 for $399.

I have the LS-7 and like it. I don't use it for recording music; I'm not a
musician, but I have used it to make audio recordings. The audio quality is
excellent, especially if you turn ON the central microphone. The LS-7 is about
the same size as the DM-series of Olympus recorders, and it has three mics --
two that angle out to either side of the recorder and one in the middle.
It does have some weaknesses. I don't like the button placement. Unlike other
Olympus recorders, the buttons are on the top, not the sides, so, if you put it
in a case, you can push the buttons by mistake.
Second, you have to push the Record button twice -- once to put it in pause
mode and a second time to actually start recording. In a noisy room, it's often
hard for me to hear the beeps that indicate I've pushed it a second time or
whether it's gone into Pause mode.
Third is the case. The previous Olympus recorders I have owned had a nice case
with a kickstandstand on the back that let you position the recorder
upright. This recorder has a cheap case, kind of like a glov, you put the
recorder into. I hate it. In fact, I'm using one of my old cases for my LS-7.
It does have full voice guidance -- except for getting System information (how
much memory you have left, etc) and a couple of other menu items that don't
read.

That's my thumbnail review.
