Fw: n-Track Studio 6.0 Released

2008-09-02 Thread Bob Nelson

List members may find news of this multi-track recording and editing
software interesting.

Accessibility has not been a strong point for the software in version 5 but,
maybe, some enterprising script writer may like to take up the challenge of
making version 6 easy to use.

Re: audio equipment help

2008-08-14 Thread Bob Nelson

I suggest that you go to the web page:

http://www.blindcooltech.com

and download the audio presentations on various items of recording equipment
prepared by some very experienced recordists. In particular, look for
presentations by Neal Ures on Edirol and Sony recorders and various
microphones.

If you are looking for a portable mixer, have a look at the Behringer Xenyx
1000FX which I think isan AC-DC mixer which will allow you to use
microphones that have the 3 pin XLR connectors.

Samson is another company which has some useful mixers at affordable prices.
And no, that is not Samsung (the Korean electronics company), it is spelled
S A M S O N.

Hope this helps,

Bob Nelson

Subject: audio equipment help

Hello,

Maybe somebody could help me...

I'm new to the audio field... (I've had tape recorders and a little Olympus
WS330), but want to get into pro audio production. I want whatever I've got
to be portable and relativley small.

I have moved through a series of equipment and now that I know ediiting
skills and mixing, I would like to persue a carreer in audio.

Currently, I am using an Olympus WS330, which records into WMA and does o.k
as far as quality goes. There are a few recorders built into certain
note-takers
I use, but now I want to upgrade so I can get the best quality possible.

Here's what I'm looking to do:

Record in sterio, as high quality as possible so I can pick up:

musical instruments (ukulele especially, as that is what I play)

Sound effects

Ambiances (animals, walking in certain areas... you get the picture)

Record bootleg concerts

Which recorder should I get? I don't want to spend over $350 if I can help
it (don't have all that much at the moment).

I am also looking for a recorder that is reasonably accessable, has the
quality of the ZoomH2, is relatively small and not combersum to lug around,
but
is of the highest quality possible within this price range. I quite like
the sound quality of the zoomH2, but do not like the inaccessability of it.

What microphones should I invest in? I want good quality external sterio
microphones... a coe-worker highly praised LSR, and suggested Sure Mike 57
or
58 as the way to go?

I basicly want to record everything, have it sound as good as possible, and
not struggle navigating complicated menus where is the chance of me screwing
something up. Any help on this matter you could give is greatly
appreciated... also what else would I need? I currently am using
Soundforge and Studio
Recorder (because of it's multi-track capabilities.)
I want a recorder that has a good internal microphone and can record music
very well... needs to have 1/8 jacks, mike in/line in, multi file types,
compression, and such.

Want a microphone that records in stereo, can pick up even the tiniest
noise, and yet can be lowered down if the gain is too loud.

How does ZoomH2 stand next to other digital recorders? I want to be able to
record both speech and music...
Once learned, are the menus of the digital recorder ZoomH2 easy to remember
and easy to access?

Thanks for lettin' me ramble.

Sincerely,

Joshua Pearson

Re: mp3 boombox

2008-04-06 Thread Bob Nelson

Try the Phillips AZ1826. It has a radio, cd and a USB port so you can play
MP3 and WMA tracks off a USB drive.

Cost is about $100 (US). However, not sure if it is available in north
America.

A google search could tell you more.

Subject: short Wave radio questions

Hi list. As you know we are plunging into HD TV shortly. We have a C C
Radio which has the old tV on it. What is their new Short Wave Radio like?
Does anybody know of a good, selective, sensitive SW radio for some poor
person that likes SWLing? My amateur call was in the book as NB9g, but as I
moved and married I think it may be gone. I would like a radio with beat
Frequency Oscillator and full coverage. I don't know how much they cost.
If the radio had its own really good internal antenna that would be a plus.
Thanks. Bill

Re: looking for a mixer

2007-12-17 Thread Bob Nelson

Look at the Behringer Xenyx 502 or 802.

Behringer is a German manufacturer and you should be able to get good
prices for their mixers in the UK.

Go to the web page for the Xenyx 802, which is:

http://www.behringer.com/802/index.cfm?lang=eng

That will give you details of the mixer and you will find a dealer locator
link there which will point you to dealers in the UK.

I use the Xenyx 1002FX and have had great results with it.

Have a look at the Behringer UB502 or UB802 which are both under $100 from
various places on the net.

They use 6 mil microphone inputs but you can buy adapter plugs quite
readily.

Hi everyone,

Looking for a small nice mixer I can use for doing podcasts from my PC. i
need a couple of RCA stereo inputs, a 1/8 stereo / mono microphone input and
a RCA or 1/8 stero output. I've heard that there are USB models out there.
Are these a good way to go? Looking to spend $100 or less and looking for
something pretty easy to use. I don't requier EQ or anything like it as
I'll be feeding the mixer output in to a PC for recording.

Thanks,

Rick

Re: Can you identify these

2007-11-27 Thread Bob Nelson

Barry,

Some of the tracks are Australian covers of American songs while others
sound like obscure album tracks of American groups. You can hear the
distinctive sounds of the Delltones, the Crushers and, maybe I was imagining
it, Col Joye and the Joy Boys.

Other than finding a special interest surfing mailing list on
usenet/easynews, the only suggestion I can make is to talk to the record
librarian of a radio station that used to be big back in the surfing
heyday.

If you were in Brisbane, I would suggest 4KQ but I don't know the stations
in Sydney.

That is probably not such a bad idea because there is a radio show on
Saturday nights on 4KQ that plays a lot of pretty obscure tracks from the
50s and 60s. I think it is syndicated to stations throughout Australia. If
you could track down the person who compiles that, you might get access to a
good record library. Perhaps you could give 4KQ in Brisbane a call and ask
them who compiles the oldies show for Saturday.

I hope this is not off topic for the list, but there are a few songs from
the early to mid 60's which I have for a long time been
trying to identify. I have them on some old reel to reel tapes and the
quality is pretty bad. A medley of them can be heard at
http://users.bigpond.net.au/chapman/Unknown.m3u

For some I can guess or know the song title, but don't know the artist. If
anyone can help to identify them, I would be very very
grateful. Any advice as to where I might be able to get them would also be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Barry Chapman

Re: Making two audio sources come through one pair of headphones

2007-08-26 Thread Bob Nelson

I think you can get a Behringer UB-502 for about $50 or $60.

It is the smallest Behringer mixer and has microphone and line in.

And yes, Behringer is the correct spelling.

It will solve your problem plus give you options to do other interesting
things as well.

2007-05-05 Thread Bob Nelson

When you do a "save as", tab across to the template list.

One of the templates will be 64kbps FM radio quality audio

I think you will find that that is 64 kbits at 22050

Re: problem burning DVD's

2007-04-06 Thread Bob Nelson

Allison,

Try the combination of AnyDVD and CloneDVD2.

They are, on the whole, quite accessible and automatically compress the
source files to fit on to a DVD. Clone DVD will burn dual layer disks if
you have a DVD9 burner.

AnyDVD unlocks the disk and CloneDVD does the copying.

They are not free but the price is quite reasonable because there are
updates every few weeks at no extra expense.

Yes. I'm burning these for sighted people. Otherwise I'd say forget it and
 use DVD audio extractor.

If you want something inexpensive, try a Behringer Xenyx 802 or a Xenyx
1002FX. The 1002FX has built in special effects such as reverb etc. Try a
google search on xenyx 1002FX and you will bring up plenty of pages.

When you press control r, the record dialog box will come up.

If you press the spacebar or the letter to begin recording, the dialog box
will change but remain on the screen. The cursor will remain on the record
button.

If you press the tab key twice, you will move to the close button and you
can stop recording by pressing the spacebar on the close button.

If my memory serves me correctly, if you press the spacebar on the record
button while you are recording, the recording is paused and is resumed again
when you press the spacebar again. However, don't hold me to that because
it is not a function that I use. A little experimentation should should
establish how it works.

Re: soundforge 8

2006-11-15 Thread Bob Nelson

Hello Ibby,

I understand exactly what you mean.

On my computer, I have an NVIDIA sound chip on the motherboard and an
external Creative Audigy ZS2 sound card.

The on-board NVIDIA is used for the screen reader speech and the Creative
Audigy is used for all the other sound tasks.

To achieve this, the NVIDIA on board sound chip is enabled as well as the
Creative Audigy.

Through the control panel of Windows, the Creative Audigy is set to be the
default (or, more commonly called, preferred) audio device. Therefore, all
sound tasks such as playing sound or recording is done through the Creative
Audigy.

In my case, the usual windows volume control application allows the
Creative Audigy to be configured. A separate NVIDIA sound mixer program
allows the configuration of the volume et cetera of the on board NVIDIA
sound chip.

Assuming that Jaws is the screen reader, a special line must be inserted
into the jfw.ini file which tells Jaws to use the NVIDIA synthesiser.

I do not know how this is done for screen readers like window eyes.

As you will appreciate from this, these settings are established before you
start Sound Forge.

When you go in to Sound Forge, you want Sound Forge to use the default (or
preferred) audio device. In my case, that means the Creative Audigy.

In Sound Forge's preferences dialog (reached through the options menu),
there is a tab which allows you to specify the audio device you want to use
for playback and recording. If you specify Microsoft sound mapper in each
case, Sound Forge will know that you want to use the default (or preferred)
sound device determined in the control panel of windows.

The fact that Sound Forge allows you to specify a sound device other than
the default (or preferred) sound device acknowledges that, in some very
sophisticated setups, you may want to use a specific sound card for a
specific purpose. However, that is something that is likely to happen only
in high tech recording studios. That is why, in my previous message, I
stated that you would only use something other than the Microsoft sound
mapper only if there was some compelling reason to do so.

I hope this clarifies my previous message,

Bob Nelson

Re: soundforge 8

2006-11-15 Thread Bob Nelson
I could be wrong but I don't think that is a good idea.

If you go to the options menu and press enter on preferences, you will be
presented with a multi tab dialog.

The audio tab in that dialog is where one can change the playback and record
devices.

Unless there is some compelling reason to use anything other than the
preferred audio device, the playback and record devices should be left as
the Microsoft wave mapper which is, in effect, the preferred audio device as
determined in the control panel of Windows.

I have been using an external Audigy ZS2 for quite some time with the
playback and record devices set to Microsoft wave mapper and Sound Forge
work flawlessly.

Note that when control r is used to bring up the record dialog, the record
device is displayed. The setting is taken from the preferences settings.
Again, unless there is some compelling reason to do so, it should be left as
microsoft wave mapper.

Hope this helps,

Robert Nelson

Re: Edirol R-09

2006-11-02 Thread Bob Nelson
Peter,

I bought my Edirol R09 from Digifishmusic.com in Adelaide.

If I remember correctly, the after sales service was to return the R09 to
them if there was a problem in the first 30 days and after that, take the
R09 to Edirol. That is not a problem because Edirol/Roland has a
significant presence in Australia.

I suggest that you send an e-mail to Scott Fisher of Digifishmusic.com and
get a price from him. If you mention that you are blind, he will go out of
his way to be helpful to you

The e-mail address is:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The internet link is

http://www.oztion.com.au/vshops/vshops.aspx?shopid=498

On the other hand, you could save $100 or more by purchasing from someone in
the states who is reliable. For example, Jerry Richer or the Sound
Professionals. However, before you do that, make sure to contact
Edirol/Roland in Australia to verify that they will service the unit if you
import it.

A simple google search will locate the Australian Edirol web page with the
contact details.

Re: Good mikes for my Edirol r09

Kathy,

If you do go down this path, make sure that you select the high sensitivity
option and when you connect it to the R09, make sure that the plug in power
option is on.

You can use it without a pre-amp as long as you are prepared to load your
file into a sound editor and normalise it.

However, a pre-amp will deliver good results. Be sure that you get one that
has adjustable levels and turn off the plug in power option on the R09.

Hello Kathy,

Go to the Sound Professionals web site for the following binaural microphone
built into an over the head headphone. The stereo field is awesome. If
you move your head from side to side when recording, the listener, on
playback, turns as well. They're not too expensive as binaural
microphones go.

SP-HMC-1 SOUND PROFESSIONALS HEADPHONE MOUNTED BINAURAL MICROPHONES. MADE IN
USA. High Sensitivity.

The quickest way to get to the relevant page is to do a google search for:

Thanks for that!

I know what to do from here.

The jfw.ini file is there. I went through all those folders yesterday and
for the life of me, could not see it!

Have a great weekend, old mate!

Using 2 sound cards

2006-09-28 Thread Bob Nelson

Hello listers,

I have a computer with an on-board RealTech sound card but also have an
external SoundBlaster Audigy connected.

I am using Jaws 7.1 and want Jaws to use the on-board RealTech sound card and
everything else to go to the external SoundBlaster Audigy.

It used to be possible to do it by editing a file called JFW.INI but Jaws 7.1
does not seem to use JFW.INI.

Does anyone know how this can be done with Jaws 7.1?

Re: Answring Machine software

2006-06-09 Thread Bob Nelson

Try www.talkingcallerid.com

Jonathan Mosen did a review of this program on Main Menu some time ago.

Talking Caller ID - Caller ID Software featuring Talking, Paging, Email,
Voice Mail, Blocking, Text-to-speech, Eliminate Telemarketers

Talking Caller ID is a shareware program that actually talks to you, telling
you

who is calling before you pick up the phone.

Version 6 has a revolutionary new feature which will virtually eliminate

telemarketers. The program will actually send a special message to

telemarketer's auto dialers which will instruct them to remove your number
from

their calling lists forever. By law, they have to remove your number or
they

can be heavily fined. The program will stop telemarketers and give you many

more options than products such as the TeleZapper and The Call Screener. A

voice modem that is 100% TAPI compliant and caller id capable is required to
use

the new features.

The program also includes a full featured answering machine with
customizable outgoing messages for each caller if desired. For example if
your Mom is calling you, the message could say "Hi Mom, I'm over at John's
house and will be home about six, if you need me call 555-1212". She is
the only one that will ever hear that message because the program knows it
is her from the caller id information. It also includes female voice
recordings for incoming announcements and also outgoing answering machine
messages. Network

broadcasting of caller id information is now also supported.

TuCows has awarded Talking Caller ID its highest 5 cow rating. Check it
out.

A Talking Caller ID license is $39.95. You can now purchase Talking Caller
ID

with lifetime upgrades for only $69.95. If you are already a registered
user,

you can purchase lifetime upgrades to Talking Caller ID for $49.95.

Re: A Soundforge 8 question.

2006-05-08 Thread Bob Nelson

Yes, it can be done but you have to do some experimenting.

However, if all you want is 64 kbits at 22050 then all you need to do is
use the preset in the template list which is labelled 64 kbits FM radio
quality because that is, in actual fact, 64 kbits, stereo at 22050.

Re: DVD Audio Extractor.

2006-04-12 Thread Bob Nelson
Shane,

Don't give up just yet. Copy protection is typically applied to the video
component of a dvd and not the audio.
There are some other things you should look at.
I am assuming here that you are familiar with how Dvd AUdio Extractor works
and have used it to extract audio from other DVDs.
What region is the dvd set for and what region is your dvd player set for?
Dvd Audio Extractor checks these and displays titles from the dvd
accordingly.
My dvd player is set to Region 1 but I use a program called Dvd Region Free
to remove the region setting on the dvd. That program, and some other very
useful programs, can be found at www.dvdidle.com.
The next thing to check is, did you select all the chapters for the title
that represents the movie?
This is not as obvious as you might think. The movie may be split across
one or more titles and you have to select the chapters for each title which
can be aggravating.
Also, the movie might not begin until, say, title 6. So you have to keep
using Dvd Audio Extractor's play function to keep checking the chapters.
If all else fails, get a copy of Dvd Fab Platinum or Dvd Shrink and create
a new region free dvd stripped of the copy protection.

E-mail me off list if you think I can help further. My e-mail is:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hope this helps,

Bob Nelson

Using microphone with SB Live sound card

2005-07-22 Thread Bob Nelson

I have used an SB Live sound card for quite some time under Windows 98 SE
and whenever I needed to record using a microphone I used a pre-amp and fed
the output of that into the line in socket.

I've decided to try out Skype so connected the microphone of a headset/mic
combo into the mic socket on the SB Live card. The mic works properly and I
can hear what's going in. However, I can't get the sound from the mic into
Skype or, for that matter, Sound Forge.

I looked at the volume utility and while it shows SB Live 9800 as an
input device and microphone appears in the list of inputs, it does not
appear in the dialog box which allows one to change the gain for cd, line in
or midi or to mute those.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

Robert Nelson
