I have both and the stream is a little more stable. It seems to hold
bookmarks without a fault, but not so with the Book Sense. I put my
textbooks on Victor and pleasure reading on the Book Sense.

Victor Reader Stream or Book Cents

2009-12-23 Thread Denny Daughters
Hello guys,
I've listened to reviews on both the book cents and victor stream. What
kinds of things should I consider when looking at getting either one or the
other? I want to be able to play NLS, Recording For the Blind books and MP3s
among other things. The book cents is getting the RFB and D Support. What
other things should I consider when looking at these 2 machines? How is the
response time between the 2? Any problems with the 2 machines? Can you record
in wave format and stereo? What's the speed compression like?? Can you speed up
music and books on both machines if you want? Thank you guys for any feedback.

Re: NLS digital player and multiple books

2009-12-16 Thread Denny Daughters

Jason,
The only way I've figured out how to work with that issue is to put all
the contents of a book's folder on to the root directory of the flashcard or
root directory of a thumbdrive. You can only listen to one book at a time,
but those NLS players don't like multiple books on one card. They also
don't like sub folders. Hope that helps.

soft synths

2009-12-01 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi guys,
Have you guys tried the software versions of the Prophit 5, Minimoog or
CS-80? How accessible are the software synths? I'm using window-eyes 7.11. For
a sighted user, the software synth recreates the front pannel of the hardware
synthesizer on the screen. You can twiddle with the knobs and switches on the
screen. So instead of paying thousands of dollars for an older synth, for
maybe $200 you can get a software version of that synthesizer. I own a
Minimoog model D synth and it sounds great, but if I could have access to some
software synths, that would open up a whole new world for me. Just curious.

Hi guys,
I've found a free program on the internet called daisy generator. I have a
couple of questions in general. First of all, do you all know of any other
good free daisy programs? I can't figure our how to make sub headings and to
have double or tripple digit chapter numbers and have everything appear in the
correct order. With this program, you give it a list of propperly numbered
files and it does the rest. Any ideas?

Subject: creating podcast tutorial and listserve creation question

 Hi All,
I am looking for a good tutorial that is very detailed as to how to setup
for creating podcast, creating a podcast and the programs needed. I think
a lady first name Anna, last name I can't remember has written such a
 book.
Also if in the same information where I can get the program Juice or the
 best program for creating/acccessing podcast.
I want to put together a series of tutorials on various software for
students at our school and to be placed on our webpage.

Earlier this month I asked how to create a listserve for our Alumni. I
did get a contact from Bill and wrote to this person with no response
yet. But I do genuinely am thankful for that contact and maybe this
 person will yet write back.
I have managed to create a group on Yahoo called isvi_alumni but can not
for the life of me figure how to add new members and have a subscriptioon
 email sent out.
I would be glad to pay someone for information or time on a phone for tech
 help..

I have written Yahoo a few times but they just keep wanting to sign me up
for another account and don't quite get my question. Even though I have
very clearly asked How do I add members to my existing account.
Sorry for the longer than usual email and I am sorry for not posting
enough information others can use here. I will start putting up more
solutions in the future. But I hope someone can help.
If someone would email me off list I will give them my home and cell
phone numbers or whatever they wish. Thanks so much for this listserv
being availlable for us who have so many question. I genuinely mean that
and tsend a personal thanks to the list owner.

Re: Fixing damaged CDs

2008-02-10 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi listers,
Thanks for that good article. I find that dishwashing soap and warm or
hot water works best. I've had some of my cds for over 20 years and I've
had to wash them off occasionally because of scratches. Deffinitly playing
them in alternate cd players helps a lot. A big problem that I had 20 years
ago I think was that I had one cd player and even when you washed off the cd
correctly, that player would still find the mistake. Sometimes, you just
have to buy a replacement because cleaning and playing in alternate players
doesn't help. A good used cd record store is a good place to look for used
cds, or even half.com.

What file names are you trying to get CDEX to create? I don't claim to
be an expert, but I've recently played around with this a bit myself.
If you tell me what you're trying to do, someone may have an idea.

BTW, I use CDEX to rip my CD's, but I'm pretty sure Windows Media
Player, Winamp and Real Player all have this feature as well. It's my
understanding that for Winamp to rip CD's at anything but the slowest
speed, you'll need to upgrade to Winamp Pro, which isn't free. The
feature to rip CD's with Real Player may also be a paid upgrade, but
it's free on my PC, although that may be because it came bundled with
something on this PC. I'm sure others will have suggestions as well.

Hi Brandon and list,
I haven't had your problem with juice where it downloads partial files.
I wonder if the server is timing out, because you're on dialup? I don't know
for sure.
When I first started using Juice, I told it where I wanted all my
podcasts to go, that way they weren't hard to find. As for RSS readers, I
use sharp reader. I don't know how well it works with Jaws, because I use
window-eyes. When I installed sharp reader I had to remove a file that it
had in it's program folder to get it running correctly. Why that was I
don't know. Like Brandon said, if anybody knows of an all in one podcast
catcher and rss reader that's accessible, let me know too. Thanks.

 Hi all,
I've got a question about podcast receivers. I've currently got the
latest version of Juice. It's downloaded partial podcast files and
called them complete. It also claims partial downloads that aren't
anywhere on my computer. Is this expected behavior, the fault of my
dial-up connection or something totally out there?
Regardless, does anyone have any suggestions for other JFW 7 friendly
 podcast receivers?
On a related, but not pc audio topic, what about RSS receivers. I saw a
demo of the Icon recently, and the podcasts and RSS were integrated into
one client. Is that done in any for the PC? And if so, do any of them
work with JAWS and cash the RSS articles?

I'm relatively new to the whole thing, but I want to get started.
 Thanks for any help,

Hey there,
When ever you convert from mp3 to wave and back again, you'll lose
something in the process. You might not here the loss but it's there. Even
with programs like mp3 direct cut you still lose something. I know they say
you don't because you're directly editing the mp3 but you are because the
program still has to decompress and recompress that file. The only format
where you won't lose something is working with wave files.

Hi Joanne and list,
Joanne, to answer your first question, I don't use the media player
classic hardly at all. Sure it's there in place of real player, and I got
rid of real player because of the icon that appeared in the system tray that
I had to disable every time I started the machine. As well as it was always
trying to update itself. I have winamp set as my default player and media
player classic only comes up real occasionally on the web. Honestly I don't
know the answer to this one and I apologize. I looked in the program itself
and I can tell you how to mute but not how to access the volume control.
It's under the volume control pull down, I just can't access the hotkey with
window-eyes.

 Subject: another radio question

 Hi guys,
I've been trying to get in to commercial radio for four years or so.
 I
spent 8 years at a college radio station where we followed a playlist for
our top 40 format. The college wouldn't buy us automation software. My
question is, how do you pay your dues when you can't get hired to pay
them? In the San francisco bay area, I tried to get on as a board op at a
few of the stations and every time I was politely declined. I now take
reservations for a major hotel chain. While it's not what I want to do,
the pay is ok and I get to spend nights and weekends with my wife and
almost 2 year-old daughter. What do you guys suggest? I've sent tapes
 out
to stations in the salt lake city market where I live and no nibbles.
Thanks for any replies. If this thread is to off topic, please email me
 off list at:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Thanks.

Re: broadcasting question

2006-05-25 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi Brandon,
Sounds like that broadcasting school doesn't want to deal with you. Yes
you can do it. Although when I did it 4 years ago the college couldn't
afford the expensive software that the commercial stations were using. We
still used cds, mini disks and some carts. I brailled up all the cds and
brailled out all the public service anouncements I read. If they're not
willing to buy the equipment, see if they'll let you braille up any cds they
have. It also depends on what computer software they're using and if it
works with Jfw or window-eyes. There's a way to get experience at a basic
level. Keep bugging them.

gold wave vs sound forge

2006-05-22 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi guys,
Right now I use a basic sound editor called Fast Edit. I find it useful
for doing what I need to get done. When I bought it about 3 years ago, I
wanted something I'd used before and I didn't want to learn a whole new
program.
I've looked at goldwave and sure it's much more powerful with effects,
de-popping records, batch conversion to any formats, that kind of thing. I
don't like the editing interface, how you can't hear right where that final
bracket drops. I suppose I can get used to it. The price of gold wave is
tempting, sound forge on the other hand costs more and that's really all I know
about it. What do you all like and or dislike about goldwave and soundforge?
Thanks.

Re: Playing Audio files backwards

2006-05-18 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi guys,
I know that when I've played audio files backwards, it was just for fun.
I emailed a friend of mine a song once about 5 years ago or so and he asked
how I did it. I just reversed a wave file and converted it to an mp3.
The 2 practical uses of this that I could see would be first if you have
a twisted cassette and you couldn't get it untwisted. Just reverse part of
the file that's backwards on the tape and you'd be able to listen to it just
fine.
The other use I can see for reversing parts of a file would be to have
clean versions of rap songs. You reverse the curse words. That's if you
couldn't get a hold of the radio edit.

regarding Fast Edit

2006-05-07 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi Tate and list,
Fast Edit runs about $200 US. The only thing with this program that is
kind of annoying is that you can't access how to turn stuff down or slow stuff
down because they forgot to put negative numbers in the character set. Usually
there was an edit box to type how far you wanted things to go down. The slider
isn't accessible to do this in Window-eyes. You can read about it and download
a free demo at
http://www.minnetonkaaudio.com/fastedit/fastEdit.html
If you have any questions, please email me. Good luck.

recording batches of wave files

2006-04-22 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi guys,
I'm looking for a program that will record a few files at set times. For
example if you have file 1 start at 6:00 AM and file 2 start at 7:00 Am, do you
know of any good programs that will do this? It needs to be xp compatible and
service pac 2 compliant. I've tried auto-recorder and that works ok. The
problem is that you lose one minute of audio for every hour you record. In
other words, at 59 minutes past the hour, you need to stop the program from
recording and let it save the hour long file. I'd also like to find a program
where you could go to let's say 59 minutes and 59 seconds and then at the next
second, a new file is created. Any suggestions?

recording 4 track tapes

2006-01-09 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi curtis and list,
When recording a 4 track cassette such as with nls or recording for the
blind, remember that when working with a standard tape player, the sides are
a little bit different than on the special tape players that are issued.
You have sides 1 and 4 on the first side and sides 2 and 3 on the second
side. Sides 3 and 4 will play backwards on the right side of the tape.
That can be easily reversed in an audio editor. Also it is easy to slow the
audio to it's propper speed Talk to you later.

Subject: markers, q points, the same?

Thanks! I assume, (which could be dangerous) :) q points and
markers are the same? Can GW write to regions as sf can between
either q points or markers assuming these regions as SF calls
them can be also given names to be written too? What I wish to do is
to record an NLS cassette, and each side will be a region so each
region will be called 01, 02, 03, 04, etc. SF gives the ability to
not only name each region, but call it something besides E.G. book
title followed by a dash, and then each region name puts it's own
name like 01, 02, 03, etc. Thanks Bruce or anyone else who helps with
this. I wish to give this a good look as well.

Re: converting from and to mp3

2005-12-28 Thread Denny Daughters

Sarah and list,
When converting a file from mp3 to wav, you'll only get the quality of
the mp3. Let's say your mp3 is at 128 bit rate. You won't be able to get
the quality up to 256 or 320. When you convert the wav back to mp3, you can
convert it at a higher bit rate but the sound quality will always be that of
the original mp3 which was a 128 in this example.
When you're finished editing your wave file and convert it back to mp3,
the sound won't be any worse than what you started with.
When I make cds I always keep everything as wave files because one time
I went from mp3 directly to a music cd and the results didn't turn out so
good. When that same mp3 was converted to wav then burned, no glitches in
the file.

Hi there,
If you have goldwave or another sound editor, you can mark where you
want your fade in to begin and end with the left and right brackets. Also
you can do the same thing with the fade out segments.

ogg vorbis question

Hi listers,
I use razorlame to encode from wave to mp3 and back. You can do several
files at once. Any of you know of a good ogg vorbis encoder that encodes from
wave to ogg and back again and encodes batches of files? Thanks.

Hi,
Winmx at least the free version has been shut down. As far as I'm
aware, you need to buy a patch at

Then it will work. Of course I haven't tried to search for anything in
about 3 or so weeks. If it keeps trying to connect to a network and can't,
the above problem is what's going on..

accessible file sharing programs

Hi guys,
I'd like to ask if anybody knows of any good free accessible file sharing
programs as far as getting mp3 or other music files? This relates to pc audio
because the files are downloaded to your pc and you listen to them in any one
of several audio formats via the pc. If any of you are offended or would
rather write me off list, that's fine too. Thanks.

Re: A question about eliminating the gaps between songs??

2004-11-22 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi Kevin and list,
Go to the option in easy cd creator under the record cd option. There
you'll see an option that t for track at once. When you see that hit the
letter I for disk at once. That should get rid of the gaps between the
songs.

Hello,
I've converted text files to audio using gold wave but never mp3s to

convert them back to wave.

Re: Odd question

2004-11-12 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi list,
As far as the tv goes, the way you'd hook anything to it would be
through the coe-ax cable connection at the back. Like Rob said, get a
converter from Radioshack. I know Radioshack carries them because we had to
get one a couple of years ago to hook up our dvd player. My wife got this
particular tv in like 95 or so. The converter is a little box that plugs in
to the coe-ax in the back and on the box itself you've got a few RCA
outlets. Hope that helps.

Re: VORBIS COMPARED TO MP3

2004-11-12 Thread Denny Daughters
Kevin and list,
I've been doing some testing with the vorbis versus mp3 conversion last
night. With mp3s, you can go down to 96kbps and you start to hear the
compression. Knock it down to 80 and it sounds really compressed. With
Ogg-vorbis, you can knock it down to 80kbps and start to hear a little
compression, but it's not nearly as bad as it is on the mp3 side of things.
Because of how the different formats compress, ogg-vorbis compresses things
much further than mp3s and it still sounds good. It's kind of like the
difference between vhs and bayta formats. As I remember it, bayta was a
superior format but the recorders kept breaking down and vhs was the format
that was more popular. I can remember going in to video stores in the early
to mid 80s and seeing vhs tapes and a much smaller section for bayta. Hope
that helps.

one more thing about vorbis

2004-11-12 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi again,
The other thing I was going to mention is that if I send somebody a .ogg
file would they open it? Or would they just delete it. If they don't know me,
let's say I'm emailing out aircheck tapes of myself for a radio job, I would
say somebody would be more likely to open an mp3 file than a .ogg simply
because mp3 files are more recognizable. Just my thoughts.

Re: making a data backup disc with different types of files

2004-11-12 Thread Denny Daughters
Joanne and list,
If you make a back-up data cd, the cd should play all the different file
formats that you have. I'd convert the wav files to mp3s just so you have
more room on the cd. When you're done burning the cd, the computer will
treat the cd as another permanent floppy if you will just much bigger.

Re: eliminating gaps in recording music cds

2004-11-10 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi Chrissie and list,
Here's how to get rid of the gaps between the tracks. Go to the file
menu in Easy CD creator. go to the record cd dialogue. When you get there,
there's an option that probably says track at once which is a T for future
reference. This is a strange option because to access it you hit the
letters when you're on the option rather then checking a box. So when you
get there, you'll probably see t for track at once. This puts a 2 second
gap between the tracks. You want to hit I for disk at once. This still
puts your cd in to tracks, you now won't have the gaps between the tracks.
The difference is that for the disk at once option, the laser doesn't stop
burning during the recording procedure. With the track at once option
turned on it stops recording for 2 seconds before burning the next track,
thus causing the 2 second gap. Hope that helps.

There's a really good mp3 conversion called Razprlame. The problem is
that you have to go to tow different places on the net. One to get the
program and the other to get the engine that makes it work. Email me off

free too which is good. It's only about 527 K zipped. Email me at:

Re: cd ripping

2004-10-29 Thread Denny Daughters
Hi list,
I use Easy CD Creator to rip tracks in to wave files. That way if I
need to tweek with the volume of anything I can go in to Fast Edit and edit
some things like that. I also convert to wave files so I can see at a
glance how much time I have on the cd. Let's say you keep all the tracks in
1 folder, just look at how big the folder is and there you have it.
If I want to convert to mp3s, I use Razorlame and usually go at a
bitrate of 320. No loss of quality that way. Just my thoughts.
