Re: Synching Files for the Victor Stream
Hi: I too use Juice for obtaining podcasts, I also transfer a great deal of music for listening, and hope that there is an equivalent program for media management, not just for synching but for creating play lists. The companion software unfortunately lacks these features, but maybe the folks at Humanware might enhance that for us. In the meantime, I'm keeping a look out for alternatives. Jeff At 04:55 AM 5/9/2008, you wrote: Hi! I like using my Humanware Victor Stream for listening to podcasts and program recordings made by Replay AV when away from home. The problem is that it takes some time sifting through Juice's downloads and RAV's recording first finding the mp3 files and then copying them into a folder which can then be transferred to a sdhc card for the Stream. Is anyone using a software utility that collects desired files on an ongoing basis into a directory which then can be quickly transferred onto a sdhc card for the Stream? Trying to find a real, real audio alternative
Hi: I suport a number of computers, and would like to feature a resource that unfortunately streams in real player and offers a link to the Real Player page. This is great for a single user, however as I maintin these pc's forclients on a monthly bases, one can imagine the headache of registering each and every user per pc per lab. Unfortunately vlc media player doesn't support real audio streams. Can anyone provide me a link to an alternative player to play streaming real audio content? Re: Ipods and MP3 players?
Hi Lauren: An Ipod is an Apple Branded MP3 player, the major difference prior to the discussion of accessibility is the ability to play the aac formated music on Itunes. AAC is the Apple proprietary format for Ipods, though they will play and or convert to mp3 format. With Rock Box, older Ipods can be made to speak and give onesome usage of talking menus. Mp3 players are varied in brand and features. Now if you're looking for accessibility, you can find a great number of folks getting Zen Stones from Creative as they are rather in expensive. For the ultimate in accessibility you can find used Bookports out there from APH, or the Victer Reader Stream from Humanware. Reviews of many players can be found on www.blindcooltech.com I am very pleased with my Victer Reader Stream. It plays multiple formats, it records quite well, all the features speak as they had blind users in mind for the usage. I forsee it having a long life, as one can purchase extra memory cards which seem to be increasing in capacity and decreasing in price. Hope this helps. Hi John: Nope, not captcha or images. Window Eyes can now speak to other apps that support comm automation. Simply, if your program is customizable, it is a good bet it will talk through this convention with other applications, and thus could be made more accessible to speak info for a blind person. Re: play a DD using VLC
Hi Lauren: When you play with vlc, use spacebar to play. I've mentioned before that dvd menus will vary. I put in Escape from New York used the space bar to play, then n key to jump past the intro screens and menus then pressed space bar to play the movie. If one wishes to play dvd's on Media Player you need to find or purchase the dvd codec. Fortunately there is a solution. If you visit videolan.org and download vlc media player, it is accessible and it plays just about all the files known to multimedia, including dvd. No charge, no extra downloading of codecs. This problem you have is not uncommon. It was a regular call to tech support where I work, until I installed vlc media player and directed folks toignore the Microsoft prompts to play with Windows Media player. Give it a try. In many other cases, merely hitting enter will start the movie. Hi Lauren: Sorrymy suggestion caused you some trouble. After uninstalling VLC, if you want WMP or any other program to play the dvd windows needs to Associate a file with the program. In the control pannel go to folders, then file types. Arrow down to .VOB, that is the extension that DVD videos use, you'll probably see VLC as the current associon. You'll also see buttons to delete, or change details. That will let you reassociate to WMP when you sellect that as the associated program. Jeff 3/19/2008, you wrote: Hi Jeff, I tried that VLC media player and after installing it, I put in my DVD and the theme music started. i couldn't figure out however how to get the movie to start playing. In my regular DVD, I get to the play all feature, but I don't see anywhere in the help section or on the web how to get the movie to play all or play the whole movie. Please advise if you have any suggestions. What do you do to get a movie to play? The funny thing is that only once in my WMP did I get the DD to play, but after having installed and uninstalled VLC, it will not do anything anyymore. I don't know if VLC effected my WMP? Hello Vy: The device manager is easy to get to. Hold down the following keys together and then release them. Control+ windows-pause. That key is directly above your page up key. You can also go to the system control icon in the control pannel. Next press control+Tab twice to bring you to the hardware pannel. After this, press tab key once to the Device Manager button. Re: MP3 wearing out?
Hi: More than likely, your pc has a performance issue. When a hard drive gets used, many files are moved about the drive to make free space available for writing. Unchecked the drive like a dirty appartment will get cluttered. The remote controle, the drinking glasses, will likely take longer to find or use if they are not in there respective places, so too with hard disks and needed files the desired information will take longer to locate, read and execute. With music residing accross large files, clicks, pauses etc... may often manifest during playback. Data corruption can sometimes creep into your files as well. To keep your drive performing properly, remove old and unwanted files with Disk Cleanup , to put all the data in one easy place, and free writing areas all together, you should use disk defragmenter, a utility also available. Both clean and defrag are located under accessories/system tools and should be run at least once a month forresults. Copying a fragmented mp3 or wav file to a portable player I have found will cause a crackling or jerky playback as well. Jeff At 03:20 PM 3/2/2008, you wrote: Hello all, I have had a group of MP3 and wav files on this computer for many years, and I do play them regularly. Can a on-board MP3 or wav, or whatever file type, wear out? All of a sudden there is crackling and much distortion. Can this happen? Thanks, Morey PS...Yes, they were of good quality earlier. Re: creating podcast tutorial and listserve creation question
Hi Dan: Basically anything that facilitates recording and editing is good. If you got those, you'll want to produce your recording and then prepare it for upload. The preparation of an audio for podcast should follow these principals. 1. File format is optimized for fastest download with the best audio. This would mean usingcompression and or normalization in your recordings but this is not truly necessary unless you want to sound great. It will also mean mp3 bit rates less than 96 . Re: Daisy books onto mp3 players
Hi Jason: In order to play Daisy books from RFBD, you'll need to have an approved player. Currently they are supporting Humanware's Victor reader Stream, and other Victor Reader players. This is due to publishers ristrictions due to Copywright law. What happens is that through a technology called Digital Rights management, D.R.M. for short, your player gets stamped with a key, this is done currently by purchasing a software package from RFBD for $20. Only players with the D.R.M. key stamped on them will allow the Daisy files to play. D.R.M. is also used in Books from N.L.S. and Audible.com. You can find the controversial explanations of D.R.M. for music and other Copywright texts and matterials on the Ellectronic Frontier Foundation's web site at: www.eff.org. I think one day, RFBD may support other players, but for now Humanware has the dominating market. I also recall that you can ship your Plextalk Players to RFBD to get the key installed as well. Hope this helps. Jeff At 08:29 AM 2/14/2008, you wrote: Hi all, I have a few daisy books from RFB D. Does anyone know how to get these books onto an MP3 player? RE: static over my mixer
Hi listers: I have a great deal of deja vu and ear ringing, so I guess its time to chime in. I had a very similar issue last year and I've discovered several fixes and one thing left which may also prove valueable as well. I would have the same hum, hiss and hard drive noises as described. I found that after purchasing a Furmen unit for line and power conditioning this helped a little, but the issues were still there. Line conditioning and ground protection is good, but it didn't due the tric so the problem was not in the outlets. I then tried the Ebtech line of products and new cables this proved to isolate the issuethe hum eliminator and ebtech 8 are two items one pluges into an outlet and the other is for lines. The line filter in the ebtech 8 product nocked out the hard drive and hum noises and the his. I have a set up that still leaves some lines with the noise, leading me to believe the problem lies in the computer. Further more it may most likely be the powersupply or the motherboard and from list posts I would guess the cables should be upgraded in the pc. So I must save up once again for high quality products should I want a quiet solution all around. I would highly reccomend the ebtech eb8 at Sweetwater.com and other fine retailers. That filter by far is quite affordable and worked right out out of the box, not much luck with the hum eliminator outlet filter but I guess that works for some instances. Good luck. At 05:43 PM 1/20/2008, you wrote: Ok, I got rid of the hum by changing the settings on the mixer, but now I still have a little bit of a sound like the hard drive is causing some little noise, but again if I unplug the computer it goes away. This only happens when the mike is being used on the mixer and hmm it has a different type of a plug, a round plug about a couple inches or so with about 5 plugs around the top half inside like an oversized old keyboard connecter. There is also room or a place to use a 8th inch mike but the only mike I have it junk and very old. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of DJ DOCTOR P Sent: Sunday, January 20, 2008 5:29 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: static over my mixer Hello Jim, That sounds pretty much like a ground loop problem. The problem with 2 prong and 3 prong power cords is, the 2 prong power cords are grounded with a 1 watt 100 kohm resister to the chassis. All depending on the company that made the unit, this resister is either grounded to the positive or negative wire of the power cord. In a unit that uses a 3 prong cord like your computer, you have a dedicated ground pole. But for some unknown reason, the companies that makes the power supplies for all desk top computers, always uses a 1 watt 100 kohm resister to ground the power cord to the frame of the ten box that the power supplies happens to be in. Sometimes, this causes all kinds of problems. In an audio chane, this kind of a ground loop causes a humming noise. and sometimes, this kind of ground loop can and does causes an electric shock. This will cost you some money, I don't know how much, but have an electrician check all of your outlets to see how they are hooked up. Because if they are hooked up the wrong way, that's where some of the problem is coming from. That 1 watt 100 kohm resister that I spoke of, your equipment can and will work without it. But I wouldn't suggest removing it unless you really know what you're doing. Another thing that you may want to take a look at are your audio cables. A lot of the times, the audio cables that comes with most off the shelf hi-phi tape decks and CD players/changers, are no good. I always replace those with higher quality audio cables just to make sure that I'm getting the best sound that the components can deliver. But that's just me. But however, try changing out the audio cables first. If that doesn't work, then try changing out the power cord on your computer. If all else fails, check with an electrician or get a new mixer. I hope all of these tips helps you a whole bunch. My best regards. RE: Victor Reader Stream is Now AudibleReady
Hi: Here are my comments on the stream. I'd love to have a company like Humanware or others market a product which is actually finished, but after the latest firmware was released, I must say it was worth the wait. I just read 2 books on audible this weekend. The compression where one can speed up a book without listening to chipmonks is fantastic. This type of listening takes some getting used to, but it is the best I've heard to date. The tone and other adjustments are a personal taste and itseems there was improvements here to. I've been also impressed on the navigational improvements. One should take note that sdhc cards might need a reformat to work after the upgrade, as mine was not recognized for playing files after the update. I reformatted the card and all is well. Jeff At 05:18 PM 11/18/2007, you wrote: Hi, just a few comments about the Victor stream. 1. With the last firmware update the VR can now play audible files, including type 4 or whatever they're called. Obviously the player has to be registered with the Audible software. 2. Supports MP3, DAISY, including the American variant of course, and .ogg files. Virtually certain it'l play .wav files too. 3. Good through an external powered speaker. 4. Internal speaker not good for book listening and probably not meant for that either. 5. You can record memo notes with the Stream's built-in mic, or plug an external mic in. Sensitivity of this mic is very good. Does record to an odd sort of file compression type though and not sure that it's easy, yet, to play these on a PC. 6. Internal speaker is good for listening to memo recordings. 7. Good support for text and HTML files too; read by sythetic speech which to my ear is good. Maybe support for MS Word files too, but not sure on that. Navigation of text much improved with character, word, line sentence and paragraph. 8. Only real downside is USB 1.1. This means if transfering files via a UsB cable transfer is SLOW! You can use an external card writer though to place files on the SD cards it takes. 9. Battery life good at around fifteen hours, and charges up quite quickly. (Some have had problems with batteries, but think this is solved now.) In short, for the money, it has to be a good deal, well in terms of the cost of access tech devices anyway. Overall quality of playback is good, though critical music listeners might feel there's something lacking quality-wise. HTH. Hi: Sdhc cards are re-writeable, as per their shelf life I do not know how long that would be. I guess that depends on how often they are repeatively written upon. I have an 8 gig card, and I've yet to have fully filled it up to where I needed and had no room to use the memory.Perhaps I'll max out at a 16 gig card for sake of selfish greede, oopz I mean convenience. Remember these players will also store and play back og vorbus files allowing formaximal storage and sound quality. To dissable the Autoplay feature. Go toMy Computer Right windows on the cd or dvd drive and press control tab or select the second tab on the dialogue box. The first is general, the second is Autoplay. That box has the choices to determine course of action when a disk is inserted. Here you can dissable the feature.
