Have you tried the Ipod Touch? Is it completely accessible and worth the cost? The last one I got was a 4G Zen Stone with External Speaker. Ray's right. It just shows up as an external storage device, on your PC so you only need Windows Explorer to copy music over to it. You don't need an application like itunes. Unless the newer Xen Stones have gotten a big larger, more sophisticated and more expensive, they compare mor to the iPod Shuffle than the iPod Nano. Also, the newest iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano don't use Voice Over, like the iPhones and iPod Touch does. Instead, you can use iTunes to copy over voice clips to the Shuffle or the Nano to have the menus, files and folders spoken to you. this is similar to the way Rockbox works. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com Dane trethowan wrote: Thanks for posting this, I had recommended the Zenstone in the past but I was told that the newer models aren't accessible? I'm not sure if this is true or not as I haven't seen one in a while but - supposing it is - then an Ipod Nano - particularly one of the newer models with Voiceover built-in - would be worth considering. An Ipod touch maybe but they're getting rather expensive whereas a Nano is more in the price range of a Zenstone. You also get many of the features I recall being on the Zenstone player such as FM radio, Memo voice recording and son on, all fully accessible. The Zenstone's sound quality is good and there's not much of a learning curv either. You can simply copy files or folders containgcontaining .mp3 files to the Zenstone, whereas the Apple products I am pretty certain, require the use of ITunes. that's a whole steep learning curv in itself. Hi, Can someone please talk about the cost f these items? I am looking for a digital recorder that you can take anywhere, that has a good sound quality, but that is also affordable. I am on a budget. I find the Olympus, across a range of external mics does have a degree of background hiss (preamp noise or circuit noise). This is the case when set to wave recording and manual mic input levels. Also, The Olympus doesn't actually have a line in, only a mic in port, so I am curious about line in recording quality, and whether you are using an attenuation cable to reduce the line in signal to mic levels? That all said, I absolutely love my Olympus DS-71 in so many ways, and for so many reasons: its extraordinarily flexible and effective voice recording capabilities, battery life and replaceable batteries, and especially its super compact size makes it a take everywhere audio device. Speaker monitoring of line in recordings, and audible recording level feedback are features unique to the Plextalk recorders. Hi Gary, Thanks for the info; I think I will purchase the Mobile Speaks because according to Humanware, the Orator will cost $450 and to pay that just for a Blackbury device, and not one that will work with other phones, is too prohibitive for me. However, if you look at the answer to question 3 on the Answers page that I sent the link for, you will hear the word nontransferable in the answer about the cost. This makes me think that the $99 price is just for a Talks license for this phone and cannot be transferred to another phone later. Mobile Speaks has a higher initial cost, but it can be transferred to a new phone when a better one comes along. If you have the Blackberry Tour 9630, you can wait for Orator for Blackberry to be released by Humanware. They say it will be released soon, but they don't say when, and they don't give a price. A few months ago I started hearing talk of a Smart Phone that was fully accessible to blind people. This phone was from Verizon and contained the Talks program. The phone was a Motorola Q-9C and with the speech program cost $249 with a 2 year contract. According to Verizon, the Moto phone was the only one they offered that would do this. Of course I was eager to have a phone that would allow me complete access to all it had to offer. I was currently using the Env 2 and I could read and compose text messages, but as far as simple things like setting an alarm or leaving myself a note, and many other things, it just wouldn't happen. I purchased the phone and found it to work fairly well, but it had a few issues. It came with Pocket Word that wasn't accessible with the Talks program. This left me a bit frustrated because I wanted full use of all the features of this phone, and so I began to inquire of other types of phones and different speech programs. Through my searching, I discovered that the Talks program Verizon sells and on the Moto phone was not the fully functioning version of the program. I was able to return the Moto Q to Verizon for a full refund after hearing of a program called: Mobile Speaks. This program can be used on Smart Phones running Windows Mobile along with Pocket PC's. It works with several different service providers and costs about $300.00. I was able to purchase the Moto Q-9C from an individual and used the Mobile Speaks program for a 30-day trial to make sure I liked all it had to offer. This program works great, and I'm able to use features on a different new phone I've purchased which is called the Ozone from Verizon. I kept the Moto to use as a spare, but I wanted a brand-new phone. Since all of this, I found out that the Talks program, like Mobile Speaks is a fully functioning program, but doesn't work with as many smart phones and with as many carriers. I might also point out that when you purchase a Smart Phone from Verizon that has come out after November of last year, that you must have a Data package with your current plan. A Data package gives you access to the Internet
Talks vs Mobile Speaks
Hi, Thanks to everyone for their advice re: my Verizon dilemma and now it seems between talks and Mobile Speaks. If I purchase my Verizon phone without accessibility preinstalled (Talks), and buy Talks myself, would that give me full functionality or do I still have to go and buy mobile Speaks? Re: Talks question
Hi Tim, Thanks for the info. Verizon sells the Ozone with Talks preloaded, but I can't find out if it is a limited or fully functioning version. If I choose it, do you know if I can navigate everything myself like accessing menus, email, internet and texting? Use of the internet would really be great for me! The Talks cost $99; the Mobile Speaks, does it allow you to do everything and would it work on a Blackbury? I think I mad the mistake of buying a Blackbury Tour with Vlingo, but am discovering it won't let me access what I need. Verizon will let me trade to another phone without any penalty because of my disability. Please advise and thanks to Gary also for his very helpful link. A Data package gives you access to the Internet and E-mail from your phone. This is not meant for everyone, but if you think there might be a reason for this function, then a Windows Mobile device running a speech program might be what you need. If anyone has any questions, they can keep the thread going on this list or contact me off list at: tim.mar...@state.nm.us Here is the link to where you can get a trial of the Mobile Speaks software. http://www.codefactory.es To get a good detailed tutorial on installing and using this program, also a place to purchase once you've used the trial of Mobile Speaks: http://www.handytech.us/demos.html Hope all this helps. Re: converting from 4 track to cd
Hi, Thanks for the info. What kind of a sound card do I need to get for the 4 track player? What is good but affordable? What is the most affordable software, easy to use for a blind person to do the actual transfer so I can have either a .mp3 or .wav file on a CD? Thanks. It sounds very complicated. You need a sound card and an audio patch cord that will connect between the output of the cassette machine and the line in of the sound card. To record I prefer Goldwave as you can not only record, but precisely edit the beginning and end of each track or segment however you want the files to be and you can also set the volume level to maximum without distortion and even do some noise reduction in many cases. CDex will also record directly in mp3 format and you can turn on normalization to set the level but there's no editing or noise reduction features. And you'll also want Nero or other CD writing software and, of course, a CD-R drive which come with just about every computer these days to turn the sound files to CD. If you want audio CDs that will play on any CD player then you'll want to record the files as .wav instead of mp3 but the process is the same regardless of what kind of final CD you want. Mp3 files won't usually play on audio CD players but should play on DVD players. Hope this helps. I'm probably about to ask a question that's painfully obvious to many. But I'm showing up at the descriptive video/SAP party much later than some. I'm writing to the JAWS list because I am a JAWS user. I'm writing to the Blind iPod list because purchasing video content on iTunes is now accessible through use of the J-tunes interface. So I hope others view this question as at least somewhat relevant. I'm presuming, first of all, that most Hollywood feature films on DVD come with a descriptive video track encoded somewhere on them. I'm presuming the same could be true with downloadable films and TV shows, too, as from iTunes. Certainly, most DVDs representing TV programs where action was described in the first place, should have that same DVS output on the subsequent DVD release. If this is true, I'm wondering about the following: 1. How can I be sure, if a film or TV show is downloaded, to get the download version that has descriptive video encoded? Is there a good source for such material? Is there a way I can know for sure about this feature before I buy? 2. When playing such downloaded or DVD content on the computer, is there a software player that is fairly accessible and which also has a menu option I can invok for activating or turning off the descriptions? I've not seen this in RealPlayer or Windows Media Player, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. 3. Am I being completely naive here? Obviously, I know a lot of stuff isn't accessible on its face, and I realize legislation in front of Congress is attempting to make much of this universal. I've heard of some people going to a place like the Serotek network to download versions of films that have been uploaded specifically for those wanting video description. But is this truly necessary? Or can the same content be obtained through regular channels with just a little bit of work on the part of the blind consumer? Just trying to get a handle on this issue, for my own benefit and for others I may encounter. Are there stuff you can't run on Zen Stone that you can with the Ipod Nano? I use this myself, especially for proprietary and protected formats, such as Audible, Overdrive and DRM. Rockbox is a firmware replacement for portable media players that has an eyes free mode which makes it accessible. It's a little more work getting it up and running, and the newer players aren't supported, but once you get it working, you'll have talking menus, talking files and folders and potentially access to more storage than you'll get on the Zen Stone. You can find out the supported players and get more information from rockbox.org. I use this myself on two media players including one with a 30G hard drive. A nice thing about the Zen Stone and Rockbox is that you won't have to use any particular software on the PC to copy music over to the player. You can just use Windows Explorer since the players will just show up as USB attached drives on your system. The iPod Shuffle is similar to the Zen Stone since because it doesn't have a display, it's accessible. The iPod Nano 4th generation is also accessible and is similar in how it works to Rockbox. Getting the Nano talking is probably easier than installing Rockbox and getting it talking, but that's assuming you're going to use iTunes 8 to manage your music. I've played with the iPod's and followed developments regarding their accessibility, but I don't have one myself. Finally, I should also say that I do listen to music and books on my Nokia N75 cell phone running Talks. Does this mean you cannot use the device without a PC? It will not speak menus when you want to choose the songs, etc. on the device itself? Using your default system voice, say RealSpeak Daniel in SAPI 5 as an example, files are generated for every artist, song and album. These are then copied to your Nano so that as you move through the menus, albums and tracks, you can hear what these tracks are. So this is quite different from having real text to speech on the device itself, and emulates what the guys at Rockbox gave us quite some time ago, but is still commendable nonetheless. They use the technique Rockbox has used for around 5 years, where they use your default system voice on your PC/Mac to create files that live on the nano to announce menus, albums and songs. In terms of iTunes in Windows, iTunes 8 has implemented extensive use of Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). Because of this, JAWS will be able to work well out of the box with iTunes once we enable MSAA support for iTunes in the next public beta of JAWS 10. I have just been testing this today and am able to use the iTunes Music Store, the Radio feature and many others. Apple have done a good job here. On my N82, I get about 10-12 hours of continuous music on a plane, that is to say when the phone functions aren't running. It's less when they are, and less again if you have WiFi active. Some of the new Nokia phones offer over 24 hours of music playback though. Another advantage of going with the Nokia phones is their built-in support for podcasting. I was in a meeting in another city a couple of days ago. On my way to the airport, I used a HSDPA connection to download a bunch of podcasts and catch up with the news in-flight. The podcast client remembers your place in each podcast. There is a DAISY player for Symbian as well, so you can read newspapers from Newsline etc on it. The N82 will also play Audible content. And even though I don't have one of the phones with longer music playback time because I use the KNFB Reader which only works on the N82 for now, I have a tiny device with me that is a 3400 MA battery, allowing me to charge the phone 3 times. The battery in turn then charges via a wall outlet or USB port. So for me, carrying an iPod, a Stream, or whatever it might be makes no sense. A smartphone does so much more and is in your pocket for a range of uses. In the US, obviously NLS may be a factor, but it isn't for me. Re: playing a dvd using windows media 10 with jfw 7
Hi Jeff, I tried that VLC media player and after installing it, I put in my DVD and the theme music started. i couldn't figure out however how to get the movie to start playing. In my regular DVD, I get to the play all feature, but I don't see anywhere in the help section or on the web how to get the movie to play all or play the whole movie. Please advise if you have any suggestions. What do you do to get a movie to play? The funny thing is that only once in my WMP did I get the DD to play, but after having installed and uninstalled VLC, it will not do anything anyymore. I don't know if VLC effected my WMP? Thank you. - Original Message - From: Jeffrey Dunn [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 8:39 PM Subject: Re: playing a DVD using windows media 10 with jfw 7 Hi Lauren: The problem is the media player requires files call codecs codec stads for code decoder, DVDs, and other files like mp3 and so forth use special decoders to play. If one wishes to play dvd's on Media Player you need to find or purchase the DVD codec. Fortunately there is a solution. If you visit videolan.org and download vlc media player, it is accessible and it plays just about all the files known to multimedia, including DVD. No charge, no extra downloading of codecs. This problem you have is not uncommon. It was a regular call to tech support where I work, until I installed vlc media player and directed folks toignore the Microsoft prompts to play with Windows Media player. Give it a try. I waited for something to happen, but nothing happens. No sound at all. What's wrong with WMP11? I put in the same DVD into my regular DVD player and I could get it to play by pressing the play button twice. Re: playing a dvd using windows media 10 with jfw 7
Hi, I downloaded the VLC Media Player. I put in my DVD into the PC and the theme music started up. i still can't figure out how to go to the start of the actual movie. There are titles and chapters. Forigve me for sounding so stupid, but I am not certain the difference between them. How can I get the actual movie to start playing?
