I'm not familiar with the newer models of the Zen Stone. The last one I
got was a 4G Zen Stone with External Speaker. Ray's right. It just shows
up as an external storage device, on your PC so you only need Windows
Explorer to copy music over to it. You don't need an application like
itunes.

Unless the newer Xen Stones have gotten a big larger, more sophisticated
and more expensive, they compare mor to the iPod Shuffle than the iPod
Nano. Also, the newest iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano don't use Voice Over,
like the iPhones and iPod Touch does. Instead, you can use iTunes to copy
over voice clips to the Shuffle or the Nano to have the menus, files and
folders spoken to you. this is similar to the way Rockbox works.

Thanks for posting this, I had recommended the Zenstone in the past but I

true or not as I haven't seen one in a while but - supposing it is - then
an Ipod Nano - particularly one of the newer models with Voiceover
built-in - would be worth considering.

An Ipod touch maybe but they're getting rather expensive whereas a Nano
is more in the price range of a Zenstone.

You also get many of the features I recall being on the Zenstone player
such as FM radio, Memo voice recording and son on, all fully accessible.

containgcontaining
.mp3 files to the Zenstone, whereas the Apple products I am pretty
certain,
require the use of ITunes. that's a whole steep learning curv in

I would guess, in the absence of no hard comparative data, that the audio
recording quality of the Pocket is quite a bit better than is the Olympus
DS-71, which I do have.

I find the Olympus, across a range of external mics does have a degree of
background hiss (preamp noise or circuit noise). This is the case when set
to wave recording and manual mic input levels.

Also, The Olympus doesn't actually have a line in, only a mic in port, so
I

am curious about line in recording quality, and whether you are using an
attenuation cable to reduce the line in signal to mic levels?

That all said, I absolutely love my Olympus DS-71 in so many ways, and for
so many reasons: its extraordinarily flexible and effective voice
recording

capabilities, battery life and replaceable batteries, and especially its
super compact size makes it a take everywhere audio device.

Speaker monitoring of line in recordings, and audible recording level
feedback are features unique to the Plextalk recorders.

Tim

Agreed!

accessability is a very important factor but it doesn't equate to
performance.
I use the olympus DS-71 which does an excellent job for both mike and line
in recordings.
Yes, you can monitor through headphones.
I also like the fact that it uses AAA batteries that makes it easy to swap
them out if needed.

I hear the Edital R9 is also a nifty unit

What I know is that the PlexTalk Pocket is totally accessible, nicely
packaged, has both manual and automatic level control, and does a very
nice
job of recording from the line injack. I doubt any other digital
recorder
provides as much feedback, as this one is made for the blind. Of course,
it
may (or may not, I don't know) cost more than others of similar quality,
but
there's no guesswork involved. It's nice to be able to monitor through
the

Hi all,

Just wondering, which one of the flash memory based recorders recently
discussed here, would be most suitable for making high quality recordings
from an external source via line-in? e.g. a satellite receiver.

I don't intend recording via microphone, so that particular aspect of
performance is of limited interest.

Any views much appreciated.

Hi!

Here's a summary of the accessibility features and functions found on the
new Ipod Touch as taken from the Apple Web Site.

Vision
iPod touch includes a screen reader and other innovative accessibility
features that make it easier to use for those with impaired vision.
VoiceOver

The same VoiceOver screen reader made popular on the Mac and the iPhone is
now a standard feature on iPod touch (3rd generation). It's the world's
first gesture-based screen reader, enabling you to enjoy the fun and
simplicity of iPod touch even if you can't see the screen.
What makes VoiceOver on iPod touch remarkable is that you control it using
simple gestures that let you physically interact with items on the screen.
It's easy to learn and fun to use. Instead of memorizing hundreds of
keyboard commands or endlessly pressing tiny arrow keys to find what you're
looking for, with VoiceOver you simply touch the screen to hear a
description of the item under your finger, then gesture with a double-tap,
drag, or flick.
VoiceOver delivers an experience unlike any screen reader you've used
before. Traditional screen readers describe individual elements on the
screen, but struggle to communicate where each element is located or provide
information about adjoining objects. This contextual information is very
important but typically filtered out by other screen readers. For example,
off-screen models used by traditional screen readers to represent
applications and web pages intentionally strip away

If you are running vista it should already have the sinc center. All you

preinstalled on specific phones. I believe that Nuance will mnake a
Windows Mobile version of Talks available that you can urchase separately
and install on any supported Windows Mobile phone, but this hasn't
happened yet.

 Hi,

Thanks to everyone for their advice re: my Verizon dilemma and now it
seems between talks and Mobile Speaks. If I purchase my Verizon phone
without accessibility preinstalled (Talks), and buy Talks myself, would
that give me full functionality or do I still have to go and buy mobile
Speaks?

Re: Talks question

2009-08-28 Thread Lauren

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the info; I think I will purchase the Mobile Speaks because
according to Humanware, the Orator will cost $450 and to pay that just for a
Blackbury device, and not one that will work with other phones, is too
prohibitive for me. I couldn't believe the cost; they must think all blind
people are rich!

Thank you for your and others' invaluable advice.

Sincerely,

Lauren

Lauren,

From reading through the text version of the manual that Verizon posted
online, it seems to be a fully functional version of Talks for Windows
Mobile, and it would probably do everything you want, including text
messaging, email and Internet. However, if you look at the answer to
question 3 on the Answers page that I sent the link for, you will hear the
word nontransferable in the answer about the cost. This makes me think
that the $99 price is just for a Talks license for this phone and cannot
be transferred to another phone later.

Mobile Speaks has a higher initial cost, but it can be transferred to a
new phone when a better one comes along.

If you have the Blackberry Tour 9630, you can wait for Orator for
Blackberry to be released by Humanware. They say it will be released
soon, but they don't say when, and they don't give a price. They say it
will support all of the core Blackberry applications. This is the only
Blackberry model they mention specifically in the information on their web
site.

Good morning List,

Here is the promised information.

A few months ago I started hearing talk of a Smart Phone that was fully
accessible to blind people. This phone was from Verizon and contained
the Talks program. The phone was a Motorola Q-9C and with the speech
program cost $249 with a 2 year contract. According to Verizon, the
Moto phone was the only one they offered that would do this. Of course
I was eager to have a phone that would allow me complete access to all
it had to offer. I was currently using the Env 2 and I could read and
compose text messages, but as far as simple things like setting an alarm
or leaving myself a note, and many other things, it just wouldn't
happen.

I purchased the phone and found it to work fairly well, but it had a few
issues. It came with Pocket Word that wasn't accessible with the Talks
program. This left me a bit frustrated because I wanted full use of all
the features of this phone, and so I began to inquire of other types of
phones and different speech programs. Through my searching, I
discovered that the Talks program Verizon sells and on the Moto phone
was not the fully functioning version of the program.

I was able to return the Moto Q to Verizon for a full refund after
hearing of a program called: Mobile Speaks. This program can be used
on Smart Phones running Windows Mobile along with Pocket PC's. It works
with several different service providers and costs about $300.00. I was
able to purchase the Moto Q-9C from an individual and used the Mobile
Speaks program for a 30-day trial to make sure I liked all it had to
offer. This program works great, and I'm able to use features on a
different new phone I've purchased which is called the Ozone from
Verizon. I kept the Moto to use as a spare, but I wanted a brand-new
phone.

Since all of this, I found out that the Talks program, like Mobile
Speaks is a fully functioning program, but doesn't work with as many
smart phones and with as many carriers.

I might also point out that when you purchase a Smart Phone from Verizon
that has come out after November of last year, that you must have a Data
package with your current plan. A Data package gives you access to the
Internet

It depends on the version of talks.

if the ozone is a series two handset then you might have some limited

Having said this talks does allow for email, texting and internet both wap

it the latter, then it's likey that their version of talks is 2.5 which

I do this kind of thing all the time. You need a sound card and an audio
patch cord that will connect between the output of the cassette machine and
the line in of the sound card. To record I prefer Goldwave as you can not
only record, but precisely edit the beginning and end of each track or
segment however you want the files to be and you can also set the volume
level to maximum without distortion and even do some noise reduction in
many cases. CDex will also record directly in mp3 format and you can turn
on normalization to set the level but there's no editing or noise reduction
features. And you'll also want Nero or other CD writing software and, of
course, a CD-R drive which come with just about every computer these days
to turn the sound files to CD. If you want audio CDs that will play on any
CD player then you'll want to record the files as .wav instead of mp3 but
the process is the same regardless of what kind of final CD you want. Mp3
files won't usually play on audio CD players but should play on DVD
players. Hope this helps.

Subject: Descriptive Video on Commercial DVDs and Downloads

Hi, folks.

I'm probably about to ask a question that's painfully obvious to many.
But I'm showing up at the descriptive video/SAP party much later than
some. I'm writing to the JAWS list because I am a JAWS user. I'm
writing to the Blind iPod list because purchasing video content on
iTunes is now accessible through use of the J-tunes interface. So I
hope others view this question as at least somewhat relevant.

I'm presuming, first of all, that most Hollywood feature films on DVD
come with a descriptive video track encoded somewhere on them. I'm
presuming the same could be true with downloadable films and TV shows,
too, as from iTunes. Certainly, most DVDs representing TV programs
where action was described in the first place, should have that same
DVS output on the subsequent DVD release. If this is true, I'm
wondering about the following:

1. How can I be sure, if a film or TV show is downloaded, to get the
download version that has descriptive video encoded? Is there a good
source for such material? Is there a way I can know for sure about
this feature before I buy?

2. When playing such downloaded or DVD content on the computer, is
there a software player that is fairly accessible and which also has a
menu option I can invok for activating or turning off the
descriptions? I've not seen this in RealPlayer or Windows Media
Player, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.

3. Am I being completely naive here? Obviously, I know a lot of
stuff isn't accessible on its face, and I realize legislation in front
of Congress is attempting to make much of this universal. I've heard
of some people going to a place like the Serotek network to download
versions of films that have been uploaded specifically for those
wanting video description. But is this truly necessary? Or can the
same content be obtained through regular channels with just a little
bit of work on the part of the blind consumer?

Just trying to get a handle on this issue, for my own benefit and for
others I may encounter.

Kind regards,

-Kane

The victor reader stream is the most accessible player and I am not being
smart. If you just want to play music one file after
another any cheap mp3 player will do. but for total access to what you
are playing the stream is the player of choice. I even excuse the $300
price tag. for the access you get that is a bargain.- Original

As others have said the Zen Stone is an off the shelf portable media
player that, since it doesn't have a display is totally accessible. I
use this myself, especially for proprietary and protected formats, such
as Audible, Overdrive and DRM.

Rockbox is a firmware replacement for portable media players that has an
eyes free mode which makes it accessible. It's a little more work
getting it up and running, and the newer players aren't supported, but
once you get it working, you'll have talking menus, talking files and
folders and potentially access to more storage than you'll get on the
Zen Stone. You can find out the supported players and get more
information from rockbox.org. I use this myself on two media players
including one with a 30G hard drive.

A nice thing about the Zen Stone and Rockbox is that you won't have to
use any particular software on the PC to copy music over to the player.
You can just use Windows Explorer since the players will just show up as
USB attached drives on your system.

The iPod Shuffle is similar to the Zen Stone since because it doesn't
have a display, it's accessible. The iPod Nano 4th generation is also
accessible and is similar in how it works to Rockbox. Getting the Nano
talking is probably easier than installing Rockbox and getting it
talking, but that's assuming you're going to use iTunes 8 to manage your
music. I've played with the iPod's and followed developments regarding
their accessibility, but I don't have one myself.

Finally, I should also say that I do listen to music and books on my
Nokia N75 cell phone running Talks.

Hi Lauren,
if you talking about a hardware MP3 player I can suggest the creative
zen stone 2 GB model. It comes without a display, has a little
speaker and plays mp3 and wma files. You can have several folders and
load your music onto the player just as to a normal USB-Stick.
The price, in germany, is around 25,00 Euro.
I've got this one and I'm very satisfied with it!
Best regards

Sorry, Windows users, I do not know how to use Itunes under your

it is http://www.shanejackson.net/Talking_iPod_Nano.mp3 and the link

Hi Stephen, I have not played with one so am going based on what I've
 read,
but it appears that what happens is that when your nano is connected to
 your
PC or Mac, a scan is made for all albums and songs on your nano. Using
 your
default system voice, say RealSpeak Daniel in SAPI 5 as an example, files
are generated for every artist, song and album. These are then copied to
your Nano so that as you move through the menus, albums and tracks, you
 can
hear what these tracks are. So this is quite different from having real
 text
to speech on the device itself, and emulates what the guys at Rockbox gave
us quite some time ago, but is still commendable nonetheless.

Jonathan, so, when you have the new Nano hooked up to your pc, it feeds
 off
the TTS you are running and loads it on to the Nano, or am I way off.

Does the Nano require you to install software to have speech?

Alex and all, the new iPod Nanos are sort of accessible but do not use
 text
to speech. They use the technique Rockbox has used for around 5 years,
 where
they use your default system voice on your PC/Mac to create files that
 live
on the nano to announce menus, albums and songs.

In terms of iTunes in Windows, iTunes 8 has implemented extensive use of
Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). Because of this, JAWS will be able
 to
work well out of the box with iTunes once we enable MSAA support for
 iTunes
in the next public beta of JAWS 10. I have just been testing this today
 and
am able to use the iTunes Music Store, the Radio feature and many others.
Apple have done a good job here.

Hi Rick, it depends on what else you're doing. On my N82, I get about
 10-12
hours of continuous music on a plane, that is to say when the phone
functions aren't running. It's less when they are, and less again if you
have WiFi active. Some of the new Nokia phones offer over 24 hours of
 music
 playback though.

Another advantage of going with the Nokia phones is their built-in support
for podcasting. I was in a meeting in another city a couple of days ago.
 On
my way to the airport, I used a HSDPA connection to download a bunch of
podcasts and catch up with the news in-flight. The podcast client
 remembers
 your place in each podcast.

There is a DAISY player for Symbian as well, so you can read newspapers
 from
 Newsline etc on it.

The N82 will also play Audible content.

And even though I don't have one of the phones with longer music playback
time because I use the KNFB Reader which only works on the N82 for now, I
have a tiny device with me that is a 3400 MA battery, allowing me to
 charge
the phone 3 times. The battery in turn then charges via a wall outlet or
 USB
port. So for me, carrying an iPod, a Stream, or whatever it might be makes
no sense. A smartphone does so much more and is in your pocket for a range
of uses. In the US, obviously NLS may be a factor, but it isn't for me.

Saqib, I completely agree with you. I have no need for a Nano when I have
 an
N82. But I think the reason why iPods and other stand-alone playback
 devices
are so big in North America is that they have nowhere near a strong a
smartphone culture as Europe, Asia and other places.

Forgive me for my comment folks. Isn't it just easy enough to listen to
music from your phone or preferred MP3 device. It's taken Apple so long to
meet the VI sector half way with the accessibility issues. Their attitude
was sod the blind and who ever can't access our devices or software. It's
good that Apple are getting their head around the accessibility factor but
 this wasn't the case before.

what to do next. I looked at the help for burning CDs, and it says I need to
create a list and need to drag items to there. I use Jaws. What do I need to do
and how do I do it to burn the songs I want?

Thank you.

Hi there Lauren. Easy CD-DA Extractor is a shareware program. You can use
 it
to burn Cds and to rip CDS to your computer in various formats. It offers
 a
trial period, allowing you to work with it and decide whether you like it
 enough to buy it.

One cool aspect is that you can right click on a folder, arrow down to the
choice that asks if you want to burn the folder to CD using Easy CD-DA
Extractor, press enter, wait for the tracks to load, then press F8 to burn
the folder to disk. That's about as easy as it can get.

I have the Zenstone Plus also. I can switch between the radio and MP3
player easily. When I turn it on I am where I was when I turned it off,
 in
the radio or in the MP3 player. I haven't bothered with any of the other
functions. I think John's description was good but it takes me two right
hand clicks to get from the MP3 player to the radio. The radio works well
for me and I am in a very bad area for FM. Creative tells me that the
 radio
is monaural but I think I've heard stereo. I'll have to try it when I get
to the city. I suspect that if it is stereo then the separation is not
 too
great but it sounds really good.

My appologies, todays been rather busy for me.
Here's a link for a short cut key listing for VLC.
Remember Jaws and some other Screen readers may have conflicts
withsome of the keys so either use the pass through or by
pass option of your reader if you have some issue.

   Hi Lauren:
Sorrymy suggestion caused you some trouble.

After uninstalling VLC, if you want WMP or any other program to
   play the dvd
windows needs to Associate a file with the program.

In the control pannel go to folders, then file types.
Arrow down to .VOB, that is the
extension that DVD videos use, you'll probably see VLC as the
current associon. You'll also see buttons to delete, or change
   details.

That will let you reassociate to WMP when you sellect that as the
   associated program.

Hi Lauren:

The problem is the media player requires files call codecs
codec
stads for code decoder, DVDs, and other files like mp3 and so
forth use special decoders to play.
If one wishes to play dvd's on Media Player you need to find
or
purchase the DVD codec.

Fortunately there is a solution. If you visit videolan.org and
download vlc media player, it is accessible and it plays just
about all the files known to multimedia, including DVD.

No charge, no extra downloading of codecs. This problem you have
is
not uncommon. It was a regular call to tech support where I
work, until I installed vlc media player and directed folks
toignore the Microsoft prompts to play with Windows Media
player.

Give it a try.

Re: playing a dvd using windows media 10 with jfw 7

2008-03-24 Thread Lauren
Hi,

The enter key doesn't do anything for this particular movie in VLC. When I
see the chapters, Jaws says that there are unchecked and when I hit either
the space bar or enter key, nothing happens either. I want the movie to
play all.

I presume if you pick only one chapter, you have to keep choosing another
chapter to go on with the movie?

 Hi:

You're essentially correct. I have heard some dvd's
not playing well, but this player is far better than WMP.

If I come accross any other helpfull resources, I'll let you know.

Hi Lauren:

Please visit this link for the tutorials on VLC.
http://www.videolan.org/doc/play-howto/en/ch03.html

If you wish to have WMP, you
might try visiting Microsoft.com/downloads anddownload and
install it again.
Upon install it will ceize control of the file associations.

After uninstalling VLC, if you want WMP or any other program to

windows needs to Associate a file with the program.

In the control pannel go to folders, then file types.

 Hi,
I can't tell you anything about the list, but I often use WMP 11 to
 play
DVD movies. In most cases, it's a matter of hitting cntrl S to stop
 the
initial play, followed by cntrl P to start the commercials before
 the
movie. In many other cases, merely hitting enter will start the
 movie.
Your friend may be experiencing the screen that asks you to select
 which
version of the movie you'd like to watch, such as theatrical, behind
 the
scenes, final edit etc. It largely depends on how the movie studio
 set
 up
the DVD and of course, a number of features may not be accessed via
 screenreaders.

  Hi,

Whihc controls do you press to stop the initial play before
  pressing
  control
+ p to play the movie? I did just upgrade my program to WMP11.

  Please advise. Thank you.

  Hi,
I can't tell you anything about the list, but I often use WMP 11
  to
  play
DVD movies. In most cases, it's a matter of hitting cntrl S to
  stop
  the
initial play, followed by cntrl P to start the commercials before
  the
movie. In many other cases, merely hitting enter will start the
  movie.
Your friend may be experiencing the screen that asks you to
  select
  which
version of the movie you'd like to watch, such as theatrical,
  behind
  the
  scenes

That is correct. The enter key doesn't always work. You are way not
stupid lady. You actually sound quite
 brilliant.

Have a great evening and Easter!! Hope something cool hops into your
 basket, smile.

Thank you for the tips. Sorry to sound so stupid, but am I right that in
WMP11 and Jaws, I can press control + s to stop the initial play and then
control + p to play all. I tried the enter key and it did not do
 anything.
 Thank you.

Re: playing a dvd using windows media 10 with jfw 7

2008-03-16 Thread Lauren
Hi,

I downloaded the VLC Media Player. I put in my DVD into the PC and the theme
music started up. i still can't figure out how to go to the start of the
actual movie. There are titles and chapters. Forigve me for sounding so
stupid, but I am not certain the difference between them. How can I get the
actual movie to start playing?

Thank you.

They'd have much better luck with VLC Media player. It's free, at
 videolan.org

VLC has all the codeks to play dvd and it is Jaws friendly to boot.
