Hi,
Yah, Sibelius is simply fantastic, provided you order and install the Jaws
scripts that David Pinto compiled in cooperation with Sibelius. Without
them, useless. With them, not only completely transparent, but they also
supply a comprehensive and intuitive manual like you'll find nowhere else
that not only gets you going in a logical manner, but explains the whys and
wherefores of the many visual aspects that we could spend weeks in tiresome
questioning of erstwhile musician friends.
There are some who'll likely whine at the $300 cost of this add-on,
especially when Sibelius itself is about the same price, but lemmee tellya,
you'll almost wonder why they didn't charge more!

Hi List,

Can any one tell me if that little external USB sound card that Creative
Labs is making, will not have that dreaded eloquence crackle that most of
the creative cards have? I think Patric Perdue has this small external USB
2.0 card unit, and perhaps he can tell us if the eloquence problem exists on
that USB device, and maybe some other cool or not so cool features and sound
quality specks on this USB external Sound Blaster.

Any help or information about sound quality, and features and eloquence
crackeling would be most helpful to me...

 Hello everyone,
I got a call this weekend, that my Aiwa boombox I ordered was in. So on
Monday I went and picked it up.
It is terrific. I am really glad that I kept looking, and that I sent the
 Sony back.
I don't have the bleed in with my NPR station like I did with that Sony,
 and
I am very happy about this.
Also, for the last three nights, I've listened to WSM an AM station out of
 Tennessee.
This station is the home of the Grand Ole Opry.
I've never been able to pick up this station before, so this is just cool!
I haven't really gotten around to messing with the tape deck, or CD player
yet. But I have no doubt that I will like them.
I did test the tape deck while looking at the display model.
The price on the Aiwa website is less than what I paid, but I don't mind.
 I
think the price was definitely worth it.
Here is the model number for anyone who's interested.
 CSD-DX51
 This thing sounds absolutely wonderful.
There are still some buttons that I haven't figured out. And it took me a
day or two to get used to where things were. But now it's not as
 confusing
 to me.
However, one thing I don't understand, is why I seem to have four buttons
for going threw the radio stations.
If I'm using the two on the right, and I lock on a channel, but then
 switch
using the left buttons, I'll end up back on the last station. If I go
 back
to using the right two buttons.
I was wondering if maybe there are two FM bands, but I wasn't sure if that
was possible. And the info you get from the Aiwa website, doesn't say
 anything about that.
Well, everyone have a happy Thanksgiving.
 Terri

 Hi Jim,
It sounds like an FM transmitter would do the job.
You already have wireless access to control your computer,
so you only need to move the sound from the computer to wherever you are
 in
 your dwellling.
Using a transmitter, you could transmit the sound from the computer, to
 any
FM receiver, whether it be a stereo system, portable radio, or headphone
 radio.
With a good quality headphone radio, you would be free to move about
 without
wires, the same as your keyboard.

 this.
something about the world I just don't get here yet obviously.

... goodness, one more thing! grin.

From an article on the Betanews site:
Death Knell Sounds for Nullsoft, Winamp
 By
 Nate Mook
 , BetaNews
 November 10, 2004, 1:26 PM
The last members of the original Winamp team have said goodbye to AOL
 and
 the door
has all but shut on the Nullsoft era, BetaNews has learned.
Only a few employees remain to prop up the once-ubiquitous digital
 audio
 player with
minor updates, but no further improvements to Winamp are expected.
 \
Winamp's demise comes as no surprise to those close to the company who
 say
 the software
has been on life support since the resignation of Nullsoft founder and
 Winamp creator
 Justin Frankel last January.
The marriage of Nullsoft and AOL was always one of discontent. After
 AOL
 acquired
the small company in 1999 for around $100 million, the young team of
 Winamp developers
was assimilated into a strict corporate culture that begged for
 rebellion.
 Although
Nullsoft was initially given a long leash by AOL, It wasn't long until
 the
 two ideologies
 collided.
Frankel and his team were accustomed to simply brainstorming ideas over
 coffee and
bringing them to the masses without approval. So when Frankel and
 fellow
 Nullsoft
developer Tom Pepper devised a decentralized peer-to-peer file sharing
 system, dubbed
Gnutella, parent AOL was left in the dark.
 Gnutella was unveiled
in March 2000, much to the chagrin of an unprepared AOL; executives
 feared
 the program
would encourage copyright infringement and damage the company's pending
 merger with
Time Warner. AOL quickly clamped down on Gnutella, but not before the
 software's
source code leaked. Gnutella-based alternatives soon followed, igniting
 a
 peer-to-peer
land grab that has yet to subside.
But AOL knew it had to protect its investment and turn a profit from
 the
 freely available
Winamp. Frankel and crew found themselves in hot water numerous times,
 but
 always
escaped with little more than a proverbial slap on the wrist.
However, growing displeasure reached a boiling point with Nullsoft's
 unsanctioned
 release of WASTE
-- an encrypted file-sharing network -- in June 2003. Frankel
 threatened
 to resign
 after AOL
 removed WASTE
, but remained with the company long enough to finish Winamp 5.0.
Frankel's departure followed AOL layoffs and the closure of Nullsoft's
 San
 Francisco
 offices in December 2003.
With AOL struggling to stave off declining subscriber numbers and
 700 additional layoffs
planned for next month, the company's focus has shifted away from
 supporting acquisitions
 such as Winamp.
Despite the somber farewell, Nullsoft's former masterminds are proud of
 their accomplishments.
Winamp helped start a digital audio revolution and boasts an incredible
 60
 million
 users per month.
 After a disappointing
 Winamp3
, Nullsoft developers returned to the drawing board and completed
 long-standing goals
 with the release of
 Winamp 5.0
 in late 2003.
 Nullsoft's
 Shoutcast
, which pioneered audio streaming over the Internet, is called the
 Net's
 best secret
by its creator Tom Pepper and has reached 170,000 simultaneous users
 accounting for
70 million hours of listening each month.
For its part, AOL says it remains committed to Winamp, stating it is a
 thriving
product that AOL continues to support and will continue to support.
But without those who poured their heart and soul into building the
 software, Winamp
seems destined to meet a fate similar to fellow audio player
 Sonique
, after Lycos saw the departure of its development team. Sonique has
 stagnated for
years, and development ceased altogether last March.

The lp's never sounded so good.
Doesn't seem to matter which software I use to copy, the audio is
greatly
enhanced plays from the pc crystal clear. It does seem to matter
   which
software I use to play them back from the pc, Winamp gives the best
   playback
sound, especially on the bass, giving a more natural bass whereas
   some
   other
softwares give more of a thumping bass rather than the pure bass
   tones.
Even the old mono lp's get enhanced sound, this is true even of some
   old
   lp's from the 40's.

 Greetings,

I am a MCP, and long time ago I developed a simple
 program with the
objective of allow the user to play music using the
 computer keyboard.
 It is
not apropriated for professional uses, of course,
 but is very simple to
 use,
it is free and doesn't require any kind of
 configuration.

The software was not created especifically for
 handicapped people (by
 the
way, I'm not blind), but several blind users were
 able to use it
 without any
problem. Once the program is started, it is ready to
 play. Some
 settings
like Volume, Instrument and Chords can be defined
 using the keys from
 F1 to
F12 (the keys are already programmed to perform
 theese actions). If you
 are
able to see a little, or have some friend that can
 describe an image
 for
you, ask him to access this :

http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com/images/piano_tela.gif
 . It is a
 screenshot
of the main screen of the program, it shows how
 simple and easy to use
 the
 program is.

One of the most interesting things in the program is
 the fact that you
 can
play using any one of the 128 Instrument Set (from
 Gerenal MIDI
 Standard),
and even press more than one key at the same time to
 play
 poliphonically.

Play music using the computer keyboard may seen
 pointless if you have a
 real
piano or eletronic keyboard, but consider the
 possibility to play
 anytime,
anywere (perhaps in your lunch break, and I presume
 that you don't have
 a
 piano in you office!).

You can download the program using this link :

http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com/files/Setup_Piano_Eletronico.zip

The program is absolutelly free, and it never
 expires.

I created a Home-Page with all the information about
 the program, but
unfortunelly the site is in Portuguese only by now.
 The link is
 http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com . If you have
 experience with Visual
Basic, you can download an Open-Source (but simpler)
 version of the
 program
 at http://pianoeletronico.tripod.com/minipiano.html

You can see an English version of the site
 (performed by Google
 translation
 engine) here :

ripod.com%2Flangpair=pt%7Cenhl=pt-BRie=UTF-8ie=UTF-8oe=UT

However, the translated version has some flaws, so
 I decided to
 perform my
own translation of the most important information
 about the program.
 Here it
 comes :

Electronic Piano 2.0 is a Freeware program
 (gratuitous) with the
 objective
to allow the user to play musical notes and chords
 through the computer
keyboard. Even making use of the MIDI resources of
 the sound card (like
 the
avaibility of 128 musical instruments), the program
 doesn't require
knowledge or configuration of Drivers or any device
 connected to the
 system.
Basically, Electronic Piano 2.0 is a program
 indicated for people who
 simply
wants to play music in the computer at any time,
 without have to
 purchase
and install a professional music edition software
 (usually expensive).

 Characteristics of the Program :
 - 128 musical instruments available
 - 47 different sounds of drums and percussion
 - Poliphony (possibility to play more than one note
 at the same time)
 - Control of Main Volume and Pan
 - Combine up to 3 different musical instruments (any
 one of the 128)
 - Graphical panel with the keys
 - Note lenght is determined by the amount of time
 that the key is
 pressed
 - Execution of Major, Minor and 7 Chords by
 pressing only one key
 - 7 octaves can be selected

 Information about the programmer :
Mauricio Antunes Oliveira is a Programmer/Analyst
 and a Microsoft
 Certified
Professional (MCP) in Visual Basic since 1999.
 Currently, works as a
consulter in São Paulo with Analysis and
 Programming.

If you want any aditional information about the
 program before download
 it,
you can contact me here, or e-mail me :

Hi, I figured out some of them. I couldn't seem to
read the help files with anything other than the mouse
so I lost pacience with them and just doodled around.
f 3 takes you down an octave at a time, f4 goes up. F5
goes down the list of instruments 1 by 1,
f6 goes up. F7 goes down the list of instruments every
eighth 1, f8 goes up by eights. F9 and 10 pan, don't
recall which is which, f 11 go up and down channels,
channel 10 has the drums. Not sure but I think f 1 and
2 set your voices up and down. Guess the edit box is
for setting volume but I didn't play with that. Wish I
had a txt of that help file.
A lot of words I don't know and it's easier to look
them up when I can select cut and paste.

Hello,

I would highly recommend the Yamaha DGX500 or the new DGX505.

First of all, it is a full 88 note keyboard. Secondly it has MIDI
capability. The controls are layed out in an extremely logical and easy to
memorize order. It has 135 different rhythm patterns and 619 different
voices. The Yamaha grand piano is very good. The strings and guitars aare
good also as well as the flutes. It has auto accompaniments, a disk drive
and 100 prerecorded songs. It is very blind friendly and you can order it
through Sam Ash music for a little over $500.

The new DGX505 has some additional features one of which is a USB
connection

so you can connect directly to the computer and download or upload MIDI
files. I don't know about the price, however, but I wouldn't think it
would

be too much more than the 500.

If you get the 500, I'd be happy to send you the control layout that I have
written up.

If I can help further, I'd be happy to do so.

Subject: Looking for new musical keyboard

Hello listers.

I am in the market for a new musical keyboard with of course midi
capabilities to interface with my computer, but I would also like it to
have
automatic accompaniment features. Something with lots of styles and good
sounding instruments. Above all, something as easy as possible to use as
the old grey matter doesn't work as well as it used to so the fewer key
presses and menus I have to remember, the better. I am looking for
something fairly sophisticated with lots of sampled sounds, so I am willing
to spend up to $1000. If anyone can recommend something they have had
experience with that fits the bill, I'd be most grateful. Also, if someone
out there has the subscribe info for the midi-mag list, I have questions
that would probably be more appropriate for that group.

So far I have looked at a Yamaha PSR450 and a Korg PA50. The PSR450 did
not
have as many dedicated buttons as I would like, so practically everything
like instruments and styles had to be entered via a numeric keypad. The
Korg PA50 I kind of like so far, but it is very difficult to know whether
or
not it is difficult to use in a showroom. Any advice appreciated. I would
also like to eventually interface the keyboard with my laptop.

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

Most people that I know of don't have much luck with M-Audio / Delta
cards working with software speech. Maybe it's got something to do with the
card's processing the information so much faster than the screen reader is
generating it.
I'm quite confident in saying that most people who have tried this
would recommend that an inexpensive card like a Sound Blaster be used for
software speech while the Delta or whatever else high end audio card be used
for audio applications.

Hi,

Turtle beach is a good sound card, quieter than the various sb
cards. I owned and used one for years and the only reason I switched to an
audigy card was for the easy access to the jacks in the separate module
which sits atop my tower. I do lots of multi track recording and got tired
of crawling around under the desk to plug line in and microphone
cords. Also, the external module has volume control knobs, yes, I said
knobs. Makes life easier. But for normal work, the turtle beach is a fine
card.

Later
Rusty
At 07:12 PM 10/10/2004, mimi spake thusly:-
Oh, now, when I first got my computer, I
had a strange soundcard in it. It was
an offbrand of some kind and I switched
to the Soundblaster Live in May, 2003.
(I think that's when I did that.) I
never knew whether the first soundcard
had a line-in or not. I gave it away to
someone else who sold it later.
Is the Turtlebeach a high-end card that
cost a lot more? I'm happy with
Soundblaster. Don't think I'll tinker
too much with this old computer nowadays
as I am saving for a brand new system.
I'm thinking of buying my next one from
Radio Shack--unless I'm wrong, and
someone else can make some suggestions,
but I'm on a tight budget and I don't
want to go into the red all over again.
I like getting my system from a place
whose sales staff will take the time to
make sure I would be able to work it
when I get home. Circuit City and
Frye's are not hot places for me to shop
at, as I find people there less helpful.
I've been dealing with Radio Shack for
years off and on, and at this time,
thought I would ask some questions
first.

USB sound cards

2004-09-17 Thread Rocker
Hi it's rocker,
I have been off the list for sometime so forgive me if my question is redundant.

I just installed a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 2 USB external sound card.
I have heard there are some drivers I would need to download install to make the

Also there is some disturbing crackles from this card with jfw. Can I do something to
stop this as well?
Can I run jfw through my internal Turtle Beach card while playing music through the SB

Sorry for the repeat questions.

OK, I've not been paying much attention to this thread. However, this may be
kind of neat... I had been using a Revox
Tuner and VCR to record our local NPR station's broadcast of Blues Before
Sunrise--a wonderful 5-hour program that
comes on every Saturday night. Would the RockBox (spelling?) software and
one of these units be able to handle a
project such as that, and do they provide a way to either move files to the
Hard Drive for editing and CD-Production for
one's future enjoyment?

What Archos has done is to sell units with more functionality,
rather than necessarily bigger drives. That is, the recorders record, the FM
recorders can record and have an FM radio, and the V2 recorders are much
smaller and have somewhat more battery life.

 Hi.
The players are going relatively cheaply, and they're quite durable
as these things go. Keep in mind, though, that a machine that has been
banged up will not necessarily last much longer in your hands if it's
already been used for a while. The main problem with Archos units is
 not
durability so much as quality control from the factory. Were I you,
 I'd ask
the age of the unit and make sure buyer protection is offered on the
 unit.
Units that are sold as is should probably be avoided. BTW, when you
 get
the unit, run a scandisk and see if there are any bad sectors on the
 drive.
I've seen units which seemed to work but with their drives so riddled
 with
bad sectors that if you try to put more than a few hundred meg on
 them, they
won't read. Note also that you can replace the drive, but this, of
 course,
requires buying a new laptop drive.
As for any unit with rockbox, it probably won't talk, since the
voice UI functionality has not yet been officially released. You'll
 have to
install the voice, which isn't at all difficult.

Hello,

Please can someone tell me what accessories are available and normally
included when the following unit is purchased:
Archos Jukebox Studio 20GB Mp3 Player (MT)

I have found a few of these used, but the sellers are careful to point
out that only the accessories which are mentioned are included. So
what accessories would I normally receive when buying one of these
things?

Thanks.

You have the Jukebox Recorder. If the headphone jack is on the top left
then you have the V1 recorder. You need to download the correct version of

 Sarai,

Below, I have pasted in a message that Aman posted to the list quite
 some
time ago outlining the instructions for enabling a full set of talking
menus, and folder and file navigation. I just did this myself, and it
worked great. I now have an Archos with talking menus.

 ---snip snip---

 Hi.
This seems to be somewhat on topic, and I've received a few
requests
to send this info, so I'll send it to the list.
To activate the talking menus, you first need to download the
daily
build of RockBox. This is not the stable version 2.2, but a later
 build, and
 is available at
  http://rockbox.haxx.se/daily.shtml
Make sure to download the build for your unit, whether Player,
Recorder, FM Recorder, or Recorder V2. Then install it as you would
 any
other version of RockBox. Make a .RockBox directory on your Archos,
 expand
the zip file into that .RockBox directory, and copy the archos.mod
 file
(player), or ajbrec.ajz (recorders), to the root of your archos. Now
 download the english.voice file from

 http://joerg.hohensohn.bei.t-online.de/archos/speech/voicefont/english
 .voice
Make a langs directory inside the .rockbox directory on your
archos
and put the english.voice file into that. That is, the path to the
 english.voice file should be
  j:/.rockbox/langs/english.voice
Assuming your archos is assigned drive letter J. Now disconnect
your
archos as usual, turn it on, and hit menu. You should have talking
 menus.
Stay tuned to the rockbox list, subscription information for which is
 on the
 Rockbox site, for future improvements.
  Aman

Hi.
The next release certainly won't support any of the newer units, but
there has been discussion about porting Rockbox to other units, either
inside or out of the Archos line. There is some work being done on it, but I
don't think it's nearly ready for release. The rockbox folks are, however,
anxious to get the firmware working on other units because of the lack of
Jukebox units for sale.

You can set the recording parameters, input, bit rate, etc on the

permanent
barring a format or resetting them from the menu. A text version of
the
rockbox manual is at

set a finish marker at the point where the start of the reading takes

It's probably worth mentioning at the moment that any software that
relies on JFW scripts to work, is only useful if you're not using
version 5. Most of the scripts haven't been recompiled, most users,
I'd suggest wouldn't have that facility, and the merge tool doesn't

Hi Ron,

The best thing to do by far is to download all of them, (they probably
all have demo versions available), and play with each for a bit. If
you do that, you can evaluate how easily you can do the things you
want to do with each package. We can tell you in basic terms that a
programme will do X or Y, but different packages do these things
differently, and doubtless you'll find that you like the way one
package does something more than another. I don't know about a sound
forge demo, but certainly the goldwave demo is fully functioning, and
if you do decide to go on and buy it, you don't have to reinstall it.
I believe that there's a cool edit demo available too, though there is
a pro and a standard version, so you might want to take a look on the
relevant web-site and find out what the differences are.

Make a list of what you definitely want to do, and what you might want
to do in the future, and go from there. I'll happily help you as much
as I can, however I'm still learning, and therefore am possibly not
the best person to help.

HTH,

Rob

I'm afraid I'm not aware of any scripts for JFW and DC5. To be honest I've
not used half the features as I really only am interested in my business
with audio restoration and once I prepare a file eg the portion I want to
process - I do this in Cool Edit Pro (Audition) I then load it into DC5 and
apply any of the presets of which there are hundreds. The dialog boxes for
each of the functions i.e. Dynamic Processing, Continuous Noise filter, Band
Passes, etc., these boxes are perfectly able to be tabbed around and
selections chosen. There is a combo box in each dialog box which contains
from about 20 to to about 100 options, in the case of noise reduction giving
you many fingerprints of different devices, record players, tape machines,
dictaphones, reel to reel recorders, all types of dolby settings, 45rpm,
33rpm and 78rpm, etc. which can be applied to the file or previewed first.
In the EQ dialog boxes again there are similar presets giving so many
options it's more than likely you would be able to find one. In general
there's enough for anyone to use there - the difficulty is that if you want
to tweak any of these you have more difficulty and would have to use the
Jaws cursor to get around with varying degrees of success. As I said earlier
however for most people there are enough presets to get by with.

The other main problem with the program is that editing is not simple - I
only use whole files I've prepared somewhere else eg. Cool Edit. The good
news is that they have responded favourably to an email I sent (and others
too of course) detailing all the things the program lacked including the
need for more transport and selection shortcuts. At present it's accessible
menu-wise and dialog box-wise to a good and usable degree with Jaws, but no
doubt with continued pressure and perhaps more VIP's giving suggestions,
this good program can only get better.

I have no hesitation in recommending it at the moment if the features I've
described are what you need, and you're not too bothered about tweaking at
present. Also because I spend much time analysing a file for the best preset
it can take some time to settle on one. With the new program however with
its automatic functions not only to ascertain which filters are necessary
for the file but also with the ability to adjust as the file proceeds, I can
see this taking out much of the drudge work and possibly appealing to the
novice who wants a professional finish easily achieved.

Take care.

New Features in DC Six
When we started to plan DC Six, we decided to focus on the big picture.
Basically, we wanted to do three things all at once. We wanted to make the
program
faster, we wanted it to be easier and we wanted even more power. We think
you'll see all three of these goals in the feature set.
- DC Six is MUCH faster when processing. We now make even better use of
the math functions buried deep in your cpu and the result is a speed
improvement
on many filters from 10 to 80%. DC Five was fast, but DC Six will go MUCH
faster when you press that Run Filter button. You will see this speed
improvement
on both AMD and Intel processors.
- DC Six has a totally new type of filter that we've never offered before.
Our new EZ Clean will make it possible to fully dial in the filter to get
out
clicks, pops, crackle, hum, rumble, surface noise and hiss with less than 5
seconds of prep work. There are no noise samples to be taken - the program
finds the noise and removes it automatically. It even adjusts to a changing
noise environment automatically. It shows you what it is doing
automatically.
You'll be automatically amazed by this super easy to use filter. It's just
great for any type of record or music recording on tape.
- DC Six has another new feature that many of you have been asking for: A
video mode. Now you can open AVI and mpeg video files in DC Six and watch
the
video and hear the audio. You can extract the audio portion of the video
file and use the Classic Mode or Fast Edit mode tools on this audio.
- DC Six now has support for DirectX plug-ins. If you have other audio
processing plugs you can now apply them in DC Six just like our native
tools. You
can even put them in the Multifilter!
- DC Six has a new 20 Band Graphic EQ. This new EQ uses traditional sliders
to make it incredibly easy to apply more complex EQ curves.
- DC Six now offers the ability to rip audio CDs! This is a much asked for
feature. It will even look up your audio CDs and display the name of each
track.
A single click will get the audio off the CD and onto your hard drive.
- DC Six now offers one button delete of .pkf and temp files. If you've
found hundreds of these sitting on your hard drive, now you can get rid of
them
with one click.
- DC Six has a new Fat Bottom function in the VVA. This is a bass harmonic
synthesizer which can really punch up your bass-challenged recordings.
- DC Six now has a new batch RMS gain normalize function. This adds another
capability to automatically level volumes among different songs in a
compilation.
- DC Six now saves in many new compressed audio formats. If you install a
new audio Codec on your computer, DC Six will automatically notice and allow
you to save in that format.
- DC Six adds an entirely new mode to the Continuous Noise Filter called
Auto CNF. This is a new type to adaptive tool which does not require a
noise sample
and is a more advanced version used in the EZ Clean filter.
- DC Six will now use files greater than 2GB is size. This has always been
a limitation of the .wav file format and not the audio program. We decided
to fix it anyway. You can now record your 10 hours of radio without
stopping.
- DC Six now has cancel buttons and progress indicators from most all
functions.
- DC Six now has

Re: Roxio 6 question

2004-05-06 Thread Rocker
You can just delete a title or two from your track list before recording.
Generally you can only record up to 17 to 20 songs on an audio disk. That
means no more then 1 hour of music. You can always run the test before
writing disk at once to see if it will burn successfully. You may also have
a faulty cdr.

Good deals for those who'd like to keep on using these great players after

2004-04-10 Thread Rocker
If your just speaking into the mike then a uni directional mike is better
because it just picks up what sounds that are in front of it and not to the
sides. Therefore, it would likely reduce some of the strange noise that it

As far as directional or not.
I cannot answer that question.
I would think it is the version that picks up from all directions.
Is this bad?
Could the version that picks up only in front of it be the better choice?
Thanks.
