Ok.

Lets make a few things clear.

1. What in the world is your problem with windows. If you don't like it,
don't use it, not to mention don't call it a trashbox, you don't see me
sittin here calling your mack a trashbox. I haven't used a mack because I
don't know if there are any screenreaders available and certainly I haven't
heard of any.

2. Secondly because, imho anyway, apple's products are a bit overpriced and
not to mention I wish other companies would support mack (if mack is so
great, etc). I've got an acer aspire 3000+ here, hp pavillion dv5220, and
just recently got an alienware, 2.3 ghz intel duel core processor, 2 gb ram,
top of the line etc.

Now, the reason I'm saying this is because some people, like you, prefer
mack. That's perfectly fine. Some people such as myself like windows and are
used to it, therefore use it. Now, I'm not saying anything bad about a mack-
so why're you jabbing fingers at windows? for that matter, if mack does
everything you say it does, why are you using windows in the first place if
you don't like it?

I hope I don't look like I'm flaming you but, that's just my oppinion, and
also I kind of feel insulted when people call windows a trashbox, while not
giving supporting evidence of such. While microsoft may have its drawbacks,
I see nothing wrong with vista, just some things to get used to, and
besides, people are complaining about it all the time, but I personally
don't mind it. Now I know this is a pc audio list and will add that it could
be your computer that's causing the crash. winamps never crashed on my
system, although I once loaded a .ogg file which free download manager was
downloading and it lagged my pc bad! (of course, this was on the acer
with like 1.6 ghz, 256 mb ram) so I upgraded the thing with another 512 mb.
So hey, Dane, if you don't mind e-mailing me off list, I'd like to see a
mack in action and get the specs on the thing. Also would like to know if
any screenreaders are available and how good they work.

Ok folks, I tried out the latest (and greatest?) version of Winamp and I
 had
a few problems running it on the trashbox (otherwise known as the Windows
PC) smile For some reason (I don't know why) Winamp it seems, was
responsible for the Trashbox crashing every few minutes.

Naturally this behavior to anyone (particularly to a Mac user where
 crashes
are few and far between) lol is totally unacceptable so back onto the
machine went VLC media Player, it was listening to both that I make the
 following observations.

Firstly, VLC does a far better job ad decoding media such as MP3 etc, you
can hear the differences quite distinctly.

Controls are similar to those presented in Winamp and in a lot of ways,
 VLC
is easier to use with a screen reader, not as cluttered as Winamp seems to
 be.

I've been using VLC on the Mac for ages but haven't had too much
 experience
with it on the PC, the command set is slightly different but that's
 probably
due mainly to differences in the keyboard layout between Mac and Trashbox
Windows PC. For example, you go to previous and next tracks in VLC under
 the
Mac using command-left and command-right arrow respectively, on the PC
version you use P and N on the keyboard

If anyone would like to give this excellent little media player a try then
use your friend Google and look for vlc, you'll have no trouble finding
it. Takes up a lot less space than Winamp does plus it will play just
 about
everything you can throw at it, including Cue and Wave/FLAC pairs.

You could probably get the sandisc sansa e200 or c200. Don't get an
ipod, --they're too expensive, and when you can get a mp3 player for cheaper
than that, you shouldn't need to pay that much- but then again, how big do
you want it to be? I currently own an ipod video, which I payed $400 for.
The sansa c250, 2 gigs of memory but with expansion, was about 60 bucks.
Rockbox works splendidly on the ipod video, and a note, if your getting
rockbox right away, don't bother getting warranty. This is just a waiste of
money, as its voided when you instal rockbox.

 pointers, you will not.:
 For shuffle;
 1) Go to main menu on iPod classic. By hitting menu on the top of
the
clickwheel. Hit it 2 to 3 times to mkae sure you are in the main
menu.
 2) You should be able to hear an audible click, as you move from
 option to
option on a menu. In this step it doesn't matter if the click is
 set to go
through the head phones, or the iPod internal speaker.

Click down the menu, until you hear no more audible clicks.
 3) Go up one click (and/or option). And hit enter (select button).
 It should
shuffle the songs and start playing.

 Now playing:
 1) Go to the main menu.
 2) Go to the very last option, and hit enter.
*note: If there hasn't been a play session started, you will
 shuffle the
 songs!

 Audio books:
note: This is my setup, if you have different folders or
playlists,
 I am
sorry if this does something to your iPod. *smile*
 1) Go to main menu, and go to the very first option [music].
 2) Go all the way down until the iPod classic stops clicking, and
 go up one
 click.
 3) Listen away.

2007-11-08 Thread Timberwolf
Kim,

I've got an ipod video 30 GB. I use rockbox. I absolutely love the thing.

It voices files, folders, and all menu items. The menu's interface is
different than the ipods, but in a good way imho. The manual is very
accessible and, if I do say so myself, helpful. The voices are clear and
have nice speed. I've been using this for a good 6 months. I'll never go
back, that's for sure, and if I ever find an iriver with voice recording
capability, I'm going to pick one up.

My daughter has an I-Pod 30 gig and there are no tactile buttons on it
whatsoever. I can turn it up and down, because I know just about where
 on
the screen to touch, but that's about it.

Well (depending on who you talk to it seems) you don't need Rockbox to
navigate an Ipod, all except the Ipod touch I would assume smile.

You no longer have to use the jaws curser for navigation and FS. says
 there
will be more improvements to the interface coming. I've used it and
 things
 are much better.

 Hi!
Just wondered if anyone has had a chance to look at the new Ipod
 Classic
yet. Apparently it has a 160GB drive, forget about storing your MP3
collection or whatever on your computer smile.
The other reason I bring this up is because in the latest version of
 Itunes
for the Mac, the synching process for the Ipod and Itunes with your
 computer
 is now fully accessible.

Re: Yahoo and LaunchCast Plus

2007-09-27 Thread Timberwolf
hello

If you want to customize your station, go to:

http://www.bluebeat.com

Its free, its great, and I love it. Don't get me wrong, launchcast is great
too, but you can't beat 320 kbps. If you don't want to customize your
station, simply go to killer playlists or time machine, and choose from
about 100 genres, ranging from country to just plain wierd, in all aeras of
time from the 1920s onwards, if you so desire. Just download the plug in for
windows media player, set up an acount and your all ready to go. I live in
canada, therefore, can't make my own station due to copyright, however, this
sure as heck doesn't make it a less enjoyable experience, as there are about
a million stations to choose from, not to mention you can browse by artists,
album etc, genre, too. Adding songs to your crate or station as you so
choose. I absolutely love it- and hope you do, too!

Blue beat loves hearing from us blind users- I e-mailed them about an
accessibility on there website, and got a prompt response, asking me what
they could do to fix the problem.

I can't say enough about how unknown this website is, how nobody knows about
it. Its one of the best, and it makes launchcast look bad in comparison.
But, I'm on dialup, so its sort of dificult for me to get in there, the
minimum bitrate is 160, so I recommend having a dsl or higher connection
speed, I'm getting high speed tomorrow, so if you need more help, I'll be
happy to add more detailed instructions about things.

hope that helps,
Tyler

Hi Jim. If you figure this out, please let us know how you did it. I
subscribed to Launchcast for a while, but was disappointed that I couldn't
seem to do much customization, which is what I now expect from online
 music
sites. I loved the stations, but was frustrated that I couldn't seem to
 customize my own station.

 Hello to the list.
I have joined the Yahoo! LaunchCast Plus service and it seems like there's
 a

great variety of high quality stations and formats from which to choose.
When you call up the entire list of stations, even though they're not
identified as links using Jaws, you can still press Enter on any given
station to launch it, and it plays just fine.
You can even save the station to your Favorites list and launch it that
 way
 very quickly.

Apparently, it is possible to customize your personal station to include
artists and genres from specific formats. I'm wondering if anyone has
figured out how to do this?
I have been going round and round in circles on these pages but have not
 figured this out just yet.
If anyone has successfully done this, perhaps you could let me know how
 you
 accomplished it.
 Thanks a lot.

When it comes to AM transmitters this company only makes a 500 and a 1000
watt unit. Since this company does custom work it is quite possible that
they could build you a small AM transmitter.
similar to the FM unit that they build for home consumers. It wouldn't
 hurt
to drop them an e-mail or give them a call and see what they say.

 Subject: Follow-up on FM Transmitters

A couple of months ago, there was a great thread on this list about FM
transmitters. A user recommended the transmitter found at
 http://www.wavemach.com.

I purchased one of these and am thrilled. The range is huge, the
construction solid, no nasty power hum, very good stereo separation, in
short, no complaints whatsoever. I got him to add a level control that
allows me to set the line in for the two RCA sockets, and he also added
small buttons for setting the frequency. It has a standard antenna socket
 at
the back and comes with a very solid little antenna, not just a wire.

So if you're looking for an FM transmitter, this one is definitely worth
 a
look, but it is on the high end of the price range. You definitely get
 what
 you pay for though.

 Jonathan

converting mp3 files to daisy?

2007-08-16 Thread Timberwolf
Hi,
I'm looking for a program that will convert a batch of mp3 files into daisy
format and will let me listen to it as a daisy book on a daisy player, such
as the victor reader classic- as an example, with regular mp3's, you don't get
the title spoken every time you power up the player. I'd like this to be
the case here, although I tried using daisy book generator and it did not - I
made a folder called daisy generated books, with a folder in it which contained
the files I wanted to convert to daisy format. I right clicked on this latter
folder, went to daisy generate, and pressed enter. IT PROCESSED ALL OF THE
FILES, HOWEVER, WHEN I burned it to cd using nero burning rom and played it on
my victor reader classic, I got nothing different then what a regular mp3
is (on the classic, folder 1, file 1 etc).
Is there something I'm doing wrong? Does anyone have experience with this?
thanks
Tyler

It seems to me you need smil files to go along with the MP3 files you
 made, and
some kind of html pages that probably should have been copied into the
 folder you
 made.
