Fixing damaged CDs

2008-02-10 Thread Whitefang
Hi List:

Here is an article I found on fixing damaged CDs.

Wayne

How to Fix a Scratched CD or DVD

While compact discs (CDs) are remarkably durable, it's nearly impossible
to prevent scratches and scuffs from occurring from time to time. The
resulting damage can be either a skip in your favorite Bob Marley track
or, in the case of data CDs, the loss of that spreadsheet you worked on
for two weeks. Don't despair-repair! While commercial CD repair kits and
CD refinishing machines are available, you may be able to repair the
damage on your own with products you already have. Here's how.

1. Clean the disc. Even if a CD isn't actually scratched or
scuffed, dust, oil, and other surface contaminants can prevent it from
playing properly. Thus cleaning the disc should always be your first
move. Run warm water over the damaged disc to remove dust. If there is
stubborn dirt or grease on the disc, gently rub it with your finger
while you are washing it, and use a gentle detergent (with the water) or
rubbing alcohol (in place of water.) Anytime you rub or wipe a CD, you
should do so by starting at or near the center of the disc and rubbing
straight outward toward the edge to prevent further scratching. Shake
the water off and let the disc air-dry (do not dry it with a towel or
cloth).

2. Try to play the disc. Many times a good cleaning is all that is
needed. If, however, problems persist after cleaning, try to play the
disc in a different CD player. Some players handle scratches better than
others; computer CD drives tend to be best.

3. Burn a new disc. If you can get the CD to work in one CD
player-especially your computer's-but not in others, try burning a new
disc. The CD burning utility on your computer may be able to read the CD
well enough to produce a perfect copy. You may wish to try this even if
the CD doesn't play correctly on the computer.

4. If you have some vision, locate the scratch. Actually repairing
the disc will be easier if you can figure out where the offending
scratch is. Visually inspect the CD's playing surface for scratches or
scuffs. Scratches that run perpendicular to the CD's spiral-that is,
those that run generally from the center to the rim-may not affect
playing at all, and in any case are generally less damaging than those
that roughly follow the direction of the spiral. If there are several
scratches, but the CD only skips in one or two places, you may be able
to approximate the location of the offending scratches based on which
track skips. Keep in mind that the first track of a CD begins near the
center, and the direction of play proceeds outward to the edge.

5. Polish the CD. Though counterintuitive, polishing a disc can
repair a scratched CD by removing some of the outer plastic coating and
thus making existing scratches shallower. A number of common household
products can be used to polish the CD, but toothpaste-especially baking
soda toothpaste-and Brasso are probably the most tried-and-true. Apply a
small amount toothpaste (must be paste, not gel) or Brasso to a soft,
clean, lint-free cloth: an eyeglass-cleaning cloth works well. Gently
rub the cloth on the scratch or scuff in a radial motion (from inside to
outside). Try to focus your efforts solely on the scratch or scratches
you've identified (if possible). Polish in this manner for a couple
minutes, reapplying Brasso or toothpaste to the cloth as necessary. Be
careful not to apply much pressure, although you will still be able to
feel the cloth gently scratching the CD as it polishes.

6. Remove polishing product from disc. If you used toothpaste,
rinse the disc thoroughly with warm water and let dry. Make sure to
remove all of the toothpaste and let the disc dry completely before
trying to play it. With Brasso, wipe off excess product and let the rest
dry. Then, using a clean cloth, gently wipe disc again. If you are using
Brasso, make sure to do so in a well-ventilated area, and avoid
breathing in the fumes. Always read the safety instructions and warnings
on any chemical product as many (such as rubbing alcohol) are flammable
and / or can cause skin, eye, or respiratory irritation.

Keep in mind that it is possible to further damage a CD if you
do this incorrectly (i.e. if you apply too much pressure while polishing
or rub the CD in a circular motion).

Make sure the surface upon which the disc is laid is flat and
firm but not hard or abrasive. Data is stored on the foil or dye layers
on the top of the disc (label side) and the proective top layer is very
thin by comparison to the polycarbonate plastic bottom layer you will
polish. The thin top layer can easily be scratched or perforated. If
this happens the data is lost forever as it is not repairable by any
means. Pressing on disc upon too soft a surface may crack it or cause it
to delaminate.

7. Test the disc. If the problem persists, polish again for up to
15 minutes or until the scratch is almost completely buffed out. The
surface around the scratch

Hi List:

I did the research over a year ago or more. Unfortunately I do not have the
URL FOR THESE websites do not have any memory of what sites I went to. All
some one would need to do is search on cd-rw/dvd+-r/rw long term storage.
Also, you can do a search on the Stabilibity of right once disks
rewritable disks.

I will see if I have any of the information about this issue.

Sorry I couldn't you more. But please do a search on the net for all of this
stuff.

Since nobody brought this up, I guess I have to be the one to give the bad

From my past research;
one. My understanding is that CDR CDRW DISKS are not recommended for
storing data on these disks for more than two years.
Two. Also, my research seems to indicate that DVD+/-R DVD+/-RW disks may
be even less stable then CDR/RW disks for long term storage.

I strongly suggest that you look in to long term storage of what ever

Hi List:

I must make one clarification about this stuff on CD DVD. Commercially
produced CDs DVDs have a much longer shelf life then those that are
produced by the end user. It seems that commercial disks are produced in a
different manner then those of home consumer. I don't remember what these
differences are.

Well, one of those sources was someone who was represented as working for
IBM in a technical capacity. I'll see if I saved the item, but probably
didn't. He advocated tape as a backup medium. Not endorsing, just
informing. I have cds older than 2 years and they're going ok for the
moment. I doubt that any of us with extensive collections will be
constantly making copies anytime soon. Blueray may change this, but that
won't happen until the discs cost about what dvds do now, imho.

Hey, All.

Okay, I have some questions about Rockbox that I didn't see answered/asked
in my search of the archives.

With tax time coming up, since my birthday falls shortly after we get our
refund, I'm thinking of trying to convince my wife to get me an iPod.

First, I see from looking at Rockbox's site that it does work with the
60-gig iPod, but not the 80GB yet. Anyone know if the developers plan to
make Rockbox useable with the 80-gig? Yes, I know 60 should be enough, but
I have a HUGE music collection. :-)

Second, I know there are other MP3 players out there, but is there one with
which Rockbox will work that has the storage capacity of the 60GB iPod? Any
plans to make it work with Zune?

Finally, since they can apparently be played on the iPod, will Rockbox work
with content purchased from Audible.com?

Okay, one more question, actually...Who IS the developer of Rockbox? Is it
a blind/VI person? I ask because I'd assume it is because let's face it,
many sighted people don't think to include speech capabilities in their
software...But at the same time, in looking at rockbox.org, it looks like it
offers some great things for the sighted users as well...Just curious.

Thanks for your help.

Hello List!

I checked with Cingular Wireless about the Treo 650 and they said they have no
info on speech software because it is a Palm thing and Palm won't give them any
info on it. I called Palm and they said they had no info either. I then
checked with the CodeFactory.es company via the net and they say they support
smart phones (palm versions). The Treo 650 doesn't use the Windows Mobile
Pocket OS yet I guess. Does anyone know of a seller of the CodeFactory cell
phone screen reader programs? I also heard of a program called Talks and Speak
(or something to the fact). Would some of the Nokia phone software work on the
Treo650?

I'm checking before I have to return the phone and get another one. Any
recommendations of a better and similar phone, with accessible software
available, would be appreciated.

Has anyone used CD Trustee and can offer information about it's
accessibility with Jaws 7.x? Is the program easy to use for cataloging
music?

Thanks in advance.

I didn't even realize programs like that existed. Somebody needs to
write an accessible one. Intel Active Monitor, which came with my
system, was horrible. I wound up disabling it.

Who knows such a program. Especially freeware stuff will be apreciated.

Hi, all! As some of you may know, when you transfer a windows media file
that has digital rights Management protection, you have to go through this
dreadful song and dance to first synchronize and then transfer your files
using Windows Media Player. Has anyone found a quick way to do that, or are
there some JAWS scripts around to make this so-called accessible program
more accessible? I'm going to be talking to some VI teachers tomorrow, and
I'd like to find a quick, consistent way to transfer these files to a
portable device.

By the bye, for anyone who cares, the Disney Mix Stick is very cool and
accessible. Only thing I have reservations about is its rechargable battery
which can't be removed from the device, so you throw the thing away, I
guess, when the battery stops being able to hold a charge! Yuck!

Any help with this whole wma-drm business would be much appreciated!

Peace,
Kathy

The option you want is only called what you hear on SoundBlaster cards. If
you have some other brand of card, it may be called something like stereo
mix or stereo mixer. But it should function the same way.

Thanks a lot.
I own the iriver h140 and I use it with rockbox. I only use the normal
firmware to record directly to mp3 because recording in wav eats the
battery fast.
I whish rockbobx could record in mp3 too. Can't they record in vorbas
since it is a free format?
Any way, I am thinking of ptr2 myself.

Regards.
Nektarios.

Nektarios, you wrote:

Michael, have you had any experience with the ptr2? How would you
compare the recording quality with the iriver both with the internal
mike and the external or line in?

I own the PTR2. I've recorded with the 140, but I've not used Rockbox
for that. I believe, that one can control the record level with Rockbox
while recording? This isn't possible with the normal firmware.

I think that the recording quality of the two is quite similar. Both
machines can record in uncompressed Wave and MP3. As much as I know, one
cannot use MP3 on the iRiver when Rockbox is used, because MP3 requires
a license, and this license costs money.

The main difference in my opinion is accessibility. With the PTR2, I can
ask the recorder to tell me, how much time's left on the card or CD. The
machine tells me, when the battery is flat. I have a talking level
control. I can easily distinguish between record and record pause mode
and so on.

Like the iRiver the Plextalk has a stereo Plug-in power capable
microphone input and a line-in. However it doesn'T have optical in and
out like the iRiver. The built-in mic of the Plextalk is mainly for note
taking, I'd not use it to record music. But I wouldn't use the built-in
mic of the iRiver for that either, because of the hard disk noise.

No, it might not say that other software could transfer files. It
probably mentions Musicmatch because that's the software bundled with
their player. You returned something perfectly good. And by the
way, it makes no difference what you return. You asked a question
and I answered it. I happen to know that both Realplayer and WMP
support that player. It's too bad you weren't smart enough to figure
that
out.

Here is what I did say.
Musicmatch is just a player. There're plenty of them that
  can
replace that like Windows Media Player or Realplayer. I am
  not
  aware
that Musicmatch has any more features than they do and they
  are
more
accessible. Musicmatch has had that problem for years and
  isn't
about to change so I would just say replace Musicmatch and
  you
  should
  be alright.
I don't see anyware there anything like what you say. Look for an
add device option in which ever player you choose and follow any
instructions. Then go into the help menus and look at transferring
  files.

At 09:54 PM 12/27/2005, you wrote:

  enough
to
realize that I couldn transfer files with realplayer or WMP.
