High Garry,
Yes the iPad does have Voice Over.
I know this because, I called and spoke to someone at Apple about the iPad
a few weeks ago.
But when I discovered I couldn't use that to make recordings, I decided to
get a Mack Book Pro instead.

Hope this helps.
My best regards.

Hi Joe,

The fourth and fifth generation Nanno and the i-pod toudch with
32 and 64 gigs are accessible. Many people are using a script called
j-tunes to run with Jaws and itunes.

Apple is making most of their new gear available with access
features built right in. Voiceover comes built into macs and the ipod
touch and iphones. Hope this helps and let me know if you need more

I-tunes is free, and its getting better to use all the time. Soon
the scripts may no longer enhance the program as much as they have through

You are correct on both counts. You cannot use Windows Explorer on an iPod
using the normal iPod software installed on the unit. You either use iTunes
or the Anipod software you mentioned. I haven't used that software for over
two years, but the last I checked that software costs about $50.

If one uses the RockBox software on one of the iPods that that software
works on you can copy files and folders with Windows Explorer, but not if
you are using the installed iPod software.

I think I've heard that you can copy and paste, but you have to go
through iTunes to do it.

When I had a 4th-gen Nano for a short period of time, I looke through
iTunes to see if I could just copy and paste some files onto the
player, and had no luck in finding out how to do it. I have heard on
another list that you can do it by following a few steps in iTunes
though. *shrugs* Not for me thank you.

However, if a person really wants to use a Classic or iPod Video they can
get the Rockbox software from www.rockbox .org to use on most of these

Hello all list members,
Apple is going out of their way for their blind customers.
The first few iPods didn't have Voiceover on them.
But if you order them directly from them, by special request, they will
install Voice Over on them before they ship it to you.
I still have my Apple Nano that I ordered 3 years ago, I have no problems
getting along with it!
And to answer the question about having to use iTunes to put audio files on
it, that isn't necessary.

Just use the copy and paste command to put them on your iPod.
My best regards.

Well, the subject line asks the question. I'd also like to know if any
of

them speak what's on screen. Thanks. Joe.

Yes, VoiceOver is in the iPad. There is a introduction to iPad on
www.blindcooltech.com using VoiceOver.

Hope this helps and let me know if you need more
info.

Yes, the iPod Touch 3GS (16gb or larger) has a built-in speech synthesiser
from Apple called VoiceOver. Also, the 4th Generation Nano can have track
titles spoken by transferring sound clips from the PC.

Hello Joe,
All of the Apple iPods, have Voice Over on them.
Yes, they do read things out loud to you.
Things like, the names of audio files the weather time and date and so on.
This is especially true about the iPod Touch.
My best regards.
 John.

Unless there has been a recent change, I don't believe that the Apple classic
line has Voice Over, but the Shuffle, Nano and Touch all do.

Re: Are any apple MP 3 players blind accessible?

2010-04-15 Thread Laz Mesa
Hi Joe,

There are several models of Apple's MP3 players which can be made to
speak. There are some early models of iPods which can be made to
speak with Rockbox, then there's the Shuffle some generation or other
and up, there's the Nano from 4th generation and on up, and the iPod
Touch some generation or other and up. The 5th generation Nano and
iPod Touch both have VoiceOver, Apple's screen reader, while the
earlier models use voice clips to voice the items, much as Rockbox has
done it for years. However, some people find it necessary to spend
the extra money for the jTunes scripts so that they can use iTunes,
which you need in order to do anything with your MP3 player. So as
you can probably see, the price starts to add up.

These MP3 players will play whatever you download from iTunes and if
you wish to transfer your own files to it, iTunes will convert your
files to a file format the Apple MP3 player can play.

I myself have used a 4th generation Nano and was not very impressed by
the voiced menu items and what it did voice of the folders and files.
I was extremely disappointed with the jerkiness of the touch pad,
which is shaped like a scroll wheel but is stationery instead. I
ended up making changes to the settings which my sighted son had to
go in and change back for me. Needless to say, I sold these off very
quickly.

I don't think any of these MP3 players offer expandibility, an FM
radio, or recording capability, except for the iPod Touch, which I
believe offers some recording with a special headset with a microphone
and some sort of FM which I believe plays stations that offer
broadcasts over the internet, but I leave that to others who know more
about these players than I.

Personally, the only one that I would be interested in trying out is
the iPod Touch, but I can't afford one.

Regards,

Laz

No they most certainly do not. Of all the iPods out there, of which
there are probably more than half a dozen by now that do have some
kind of synthetic speech, only one line, the Touch, and only two
models, the 32- and 64-gig models, have VoiceOver.
