Re: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION
In addition to playing NLS books, the digital player also plays books from Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. The entire 58,000 book RFBD collection is available digitally, unlike the NLS collection. Currently, registration and membership for downloadable books is free. If you are currently receiving services through NLS, verification of disability can be done without sending in medical paperwork. The RFBD books co-exist on my USB drive with the NLS books with no problem. It is necessary to install an RFBD activation key on the NLS player. I was advised by several end users to only purchase the Kingston Data Traveler model 101 or 102 for the NLS player. I am using a four-gigabyte version of the 102 series with absolutely no problems. Re: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION
Hello Kevin, I have a San Disc 4 GB USB flash drive. I created a folder that's called, audio+podcast. I put mostly MP3 files in that folder. But when I plug that flash drive in to the player, it plays one of the audio files for a wile. But then, it stops and gives me a cartridge error message. But when I plug my wife's MP3 player in to it, the machine plays the files off of it without any problems. My question is, why does it act like that with my Sand Disc USB flash drive and not my wife's MP3 player? The cartridges come from the American Printing House for the Blind and I believe they're about $12.75. RE: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION
Hi John. First, you can put music onto the blank cartridges. They are essentially flash drives with a fancy case around them to fit into the NLS player, so anything you can put onto a flash drive, you can put on the cartridge. APH sells the cartridges for $11.95, if I remember correctly. You can order one by going to http://www.aph.org The site says they will be selling the cable to hook to your computer, but I didn't need the cable, since I already had one for my PC. The cartridge doesn't require a special cable for it. Most extension USB cables will work with the cartridge. The cartridge has a standard USB plug on it that plugs into the NLS player, so if you have one of those handy, you can hook the cartridge to your computer and transfer files to it. If you don't have this cable, you can order it when you get your cartridge. There are other places where you can get the blank cartridges, as well as the cable for it. To get a list of these places, go to http://bardtalk.com and click on the FAQ link. If you have more questions, let me know. Re: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION
High Kevin, First, I want to start by saying, think you for all of the helpful information! But I have just one more question. I was just at the American Printing House website. They are sailing the 2 gb cartridges for 12.95 each. The USB cables, cost 5.95 each. Is 2 gb the only capacity of those cartridges? Or can you get them bigger then that? Thinks. John. - Original Message - From: Kevin Minor kmi...@windstream.net To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, March 13, 2010 8:19 AM Subject: RE: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION Hi John.
I wouldn't assume that APH or any reseller catering to the blind is going to sell something for less than a general public can buy something. A quick search with Google showed me places where I could get a USB extension cable for $.69, $1.99 and $2.29, just to name a few. That being said, if I were to buy a blank NLS cartridge, and I didn't already have a USB extension cable (note that I already have a few just lying around because they came free with different MP3 players, USB sticks and so on) then I would just go ahead and order one from APH the same time I ordered the NLS cartridge. This would be for convenience though and not because the APH is able to sell these cheaper than a mainstream electronics supply store. Remember they're selling a 2G flash drive for $12.75, all be it in a special form factor for the NLS DTBM. Christopher chalt...@gmail.com mailto:chalt...@gmail.com On 3/13/2010 7:19 AM, Michael D. RE: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION
Hi John. Currently, 2 gig is the biggest size available. I agree that this isn't very big, but remember that the player was mainly designed to play NLS books. A 2 gig cartridge will hold something like 180 hours of content. That's not a lot of books, but it isn't terrible. I've heard that the design of things was to make it possible to put a 4 gig cartridge in the player, and people have had larger flash drives work on the player. With this in mind, maybe the cartridges will be bigger in the future. Kevin Minor kmi...@windstream.net To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

No, leave the letter t there and everything you already have. Just add the letter s to the end. Make it plural. It should look like this Audio+Podcasts. I say this, because earlier firmware updates to the player didn't play files in stereo. You need to have version 2.1 or later of the firmware, and it will play files in stereo. To find out your player's version, with no media in it, press the sleep button ten times quickly until you hear the serial number being announced. Once this announcement starts, just wait, and you'll hear the version of your player's firmware announced. My player has version 2.1.3 of the firmware on it. To download NLS books for your player, you need to be signed up with the NLS site. To do this, go to https://nlsbard.loc.gov and click on the link on that page. Since you have an NLS player, you'll be able to get this service. It's nice to download books from the site, and anything you get on a cartridge from your library will be on the NLS site. By the way, you may want to call your local library and tell them you want digital books on cartridge sent to you. I had to do this for myself, and in fact I had to call them again to jolt things into action. I should be getting my first NLS book from my library any day now. The player will play 3gp, wav and mp3 files. I'm thinking of those three right off, I may be forgetting one, though. These files need to be in a folder called audio+podcasts which is on the root of the drive. You can put subfolders under this to organize them. The player won't announce the folders, but when you're in bookshelf mode you'll be able to navigate to them. As for playing files in stereo, this may or may not be true. There is an email list that is specificly set up for the NLS player. You can find out how to subscribe to it, as well as have some of your questions answered. Go to http://bardtalk.com If you have any other questions, let me know. DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION
Hello List members, I just received a new digital talking book player in the mail. I have a few questions about it. For starters, this machine can play files from a USB flash drive. What kind of format will those files need to be in an order for this machine to play them? I haven't tried this yet, but can this thing play in stereo? It has a monaural speaker built in to it. But I'm asking about its headphone jack. I have seen some digital playback equipment that had mono speakers built in to them before. But when you plug a pare of headphones in to them, the sound came out in stereo. Is this digital talking book player one of those machines that can do this? Thinks in advance. My best regards. John. They use an encrypted format for the books. The headphone jack is stereo. This will play mp3 and wave formats for audio. *** REPLY SEPARATOR *** On 3/12/2010 at 11:38 AM DJ DOCTOR P wrote: Hello List members, I just received a new digital talking book player in the mail. High Deane, This machine was sent to me by the Bureau Of Brail And Talking Book Library in Daytona Beach Florida. you can play one book at a time on a memery stick type device. I am currently listening on the nls unit a mp3 book that is not nls formatted and it can qet quirky as it never seems to play the entire grouping of files but rather, goes through about 2 thirds the files. This is indeed true according to the documentation, but I've had my DTBM play MP3's that were not in the Audio+Podcasts directory. I found this out when I plugged in the same flash stick into my DTBM that I was using to transfer files to my netbook, and I couldn't tell where it was getting those MP3's from. Note this may be an undocumented feature or a defect, so don't count on it. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com On 3/12/2010 12:08 PM, dennis wrote: if you want to play mp3's on it you need to have the files in a folder on the flash disc called audeo+podcasts. it won't read the names of the files it will number them. - Original Message - From: dan kysor danky...@comcast.net To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Friday, March 12, 2010 12:01 PM Subject: re: DIGITAL TALKING BOOK PLAYER QUESTION you can play one book at a time on a memery stick type device. There is an email list that is specificly set up for the NLS player. You can find out how to subscribe to it, as well as have some of your questions answered. Go to http://bardtalk.com If you have any other questions, let me know. Kevin Minor kmi...@windstream.net To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

John. PS. Where is a good website to download digital talking books?
