I'm sure it was just a typo, but the cable is used to connect a blank cartridge to the PC. No, the usb cable is to connect the player to your computer in case you download a book. Otherwise the flash drive connects right to the player without any cable. The cartridge goes in to the front of the unit. I'd also suggest taking your digital player and flash drive with you. That way you can make sure you get the right thing. the flash drive should plug directly into the computer USB port, or the port on the side of the NLS player. you can keep the cable you have, you may use it for something else down the road.
