RE: GoldWave, recording results only in hiss

2012-10-10 Thread Rob Tabor
Hi, Colin.

Thanks for that excellent suggestion on saving GW settings before updating
the program. I would note in passing that I have never lost the GW
configuration file in the four or five updates I have installed. However, I
will start saving the GW configuration before updating in the future out of
the abundance of caution.
Best regards,
Rob "Jayhawk" Tabor

Greetings,

Thanks for the info.

You could, I believe, have saved yourself all the problems, by before
installing the new version, saving your settings, then when the new version
had been installed, importing the old settings file. This usually works for
me.

Far as I remember, this is achieved by the setup menu item, not usually seen
in the normal GW program, least not on my system, think you need go into Gw
from the start menu, programs method, it is on the GW submenu under setup.
There is a command in the keyboard file but on mine, nothing has been
assigned and if I set up a key, unsure exactly where it would place me.

I might give it a go but save settings first in case things go astray and I
am unable to recover.

This sounds like a similar thing that happened to me a while back when I
needed to re-install "Winamp" (I was getting a "hissing" sound if Winamp was
at low volume; if I wanted to move forward in the file, then I would get
this horrible sound that I could only stop by restarting my computer! I
can't remember who, but someone on here helped me solve the problem as
somehow Winamp had selected the wrong sound device! Once I set it to the
right device, problem was solved!

I discovered that upgrading to and installing the current version had
changed the settings in the device tab so that either the wrong speakers
or
the wrong recording device was specified. I had to make a few other
changes
in the process, but they all boil down to restoring the ones I'd
previously

set.

You reach the device settings tab with F11, then control-tab until it's
announced.

My system is XP Pro.

Yes, we are, but telling us this serves no purpose unless you say exactly
what you did. also, what operating system are you using?

Subject: GoldWave, recording results only in hiss

After installing the current version of GoldWave and registering last night,
I'm suddenly unable to record. Instead of the sound I intend to record or
the silence discussed in the manual troubleshooting section, I get the kind
of hiss you hear on AM radio when not tuned into a station.

My setup is the same as before. I've kept the same connector between my
cassette recorder and the PC's microphone jack. I'm actually trying to
record a cassette I did earlier, only to discover I'd set the volume on the
cassette player too loud, causing some distortion. At least the problem then
was just to reduce the source volume level. I can't find any way around the
hiss.

The only other time I experienced this hissing sound when recording with
GoldWave, I suspected I had too many applications running at once on my PC.
A reboot did, in fact, fix it. However, I rebooted twice last night without
having any impact. The problem persists today, including with a different
cassette that I'd copied successfully to my PC via GoldWave on the weekend.

does anyone have a suggestion?
