It would most likely increase the level, probably to the point of serious

Is it possible to use the phono input, if one has no turn table, to hook
 the
computer, xm, etc to? Right now, I have my XM receiver hooked to the VCR
input, but if I decided to get Sirius also one day, I'd have no other
 place
to hook it besides phono, as I have a tape and CD player hooked up, and
there is no auxiliary on my stereo for one more. I thought, from what I
heard, it would make anything that's not a turn table sound bad.

 Hi!

Wwish it was as simple as simply using a cable as Peter seems to suggest.

If you mean a separate turntable, i.e. one that is not built into a
 stereo
system, you would probably need some kind of pre-amp between the
 turntable
 and the computer.

If the turntable is built into a stereo system, then you can simply use
 a
connecting cable to connect to the line-in of your sound card and the
 line
out of the stereo system that you connect a tape deck to.

Ah, not a good idea then. That's why when I had dad help me hook up, I told
him not to put the XM on the phono as I thought it'd sound bad. It would be
fine if that input is just a name, like VCR, that is normal without the
preamp, but then it'd say aux on it.

Brent! Plugging anything but a turntable into the phono input will
make that thing sound bad. The phono input is different from all the
others. When a record is made a lot of the lower frequency audio signal is
removed from it in order to fit the sound physically on the vinyl record.
When the record is played back that missing signal has to be replaced and
this is what the phono input does. It will add that missing signal into the
signal coming from any source. To anything but a signal from a turntable
that added signal will be noise.

Gary! It's called an RIAA Preamp, where RIAA stands for Recording
Industry Association of America. I think you can get them for $50 or so.
If you have an old receiver around you could plug the turntable into it's
phono input then run one of the receiver's line level outputs into your
sound card. A RIAA Preamp is part of the phono input of a receiver.

Oh, isn't that sort of what radio does? They over-emphasize the highs so it
can be undone in a receiver to sound somewhat normal? It just doesn't seem
worth what it'd take to buy a processor to cut the highs out of Sirius
enough that when the preamp puts it back in it sounds normal.

  Hi!

Wwish it was as simple as simply using a cable as Peter seems to
suggest.

  Regards

  Andre

Thanks. All I could come up with was head amp and that didn't sound right.
Appreciated.

Re: Name and Price

2005-11-09 Thread Paul Oeser
I think most of the newer turntables have preamps built
in to
them because the new stereo receivers don't have the phono jacks in
them. I never bought one but I was looking for one 2 or 3 years ago
and saw that they had their own preamps.

Thanks to all on this thread. With the help I got here, I was quickly able to
find out that what I needed would cost very much less than I had thought.
Much appreciated.
