Hi Scott. Recordings for the Blind are using the Dazy format for digital
talkingbooks, but NLS hasn't started doing that yet; but instead of using
CD's, like RFB, they'll put their digital books on flash memory. I hope
this helps.

Hi.
The archos units which work with Rockbox are the Archos
Jukebox, Archos Jukebox Studio, Archos Jukebox recorder, Archos Jukebox FM
recorder, and Archos Jukebox V2.
These are getting to be difficult to find. I have one here which I
wouldn't mind getting rid of, and I know they used to be on Amazon, though
people are telling me that they're not there any more. Look on Ebay and/or
give me or other users who advertise such units on the BST lists a buz.

Hi.
Digital talking books are now in use in most English-speaking
countries, as well as by many European services. RFBD is the only source
for them in large quantities in the states, as the LOC has not switched to
them and will not do so until 2007-08.

RE: hardware mp3 players with lots of gb's

2004-05-31 Thread Aman Singer
Hi.
The Jukebox and Jukebox studio are MP3 players only. The Recorder is a
recording unit, as is the Recorder V2. The FM recorder is a recorder with an
FM radio. All recorders play Mp3s.
As to size, the recorder V2 is thinner and smaller than the player
and other recorder units, as is the FM recorder. It has ten buttons instead
of six, it has a lithium-ion battery pack, and I believe the only size you
can get one in is 20 GB. The FM recorder and recorder V2 have the same form
factor. The only difference between the two units is the FM radio in the FM
recorder. Note that FM recorders and recorder V2s have USB 2.0. Players
usually have 1.1. Older non-V2 recorders sometimes have 1.1 and sometimes
2.0. It's difficult to tell to which specification of USB The older
recorders conform.
I have heard that the Recorder V2s, FM recorders, and most older
recorders have comparable sound quality. The players, particularly the older
players, are said to have worse sound. For a good overview of the
differences and similarities between the jukebox models in table format, see
http://rockbox.haxx.se/docs/devicechart.html

I can't find your e mail address in this msg, but I can tell you about it. I
got mine at Circuit City for about $250. You don't install the software that
comes with it. Use windows explorer to transfer MP3's using a USB cable. The
computer shows it as drive J and the folders put themselves in alphabetical
order. There is a program you can download from the net called rockbox, its
a firm were program that will give some voice prompts, however I can't
figure out how to work it, but even with out it, I can still find my music.
The only two draw backs are that it doesn't play audible books with out
having to convert the books using Goldwave and its a little bigger than say
  the Ipods.
