Do you mean:
While listening to music or other recording (or sound transmission), your 
headphone filtered out the train noise but let you listen voice conversations 
in the noisy passenger compartment. Your headphone actually let you 
selectively filter or not filter complex sound patterns? WOW!

I have the Bose Quiet Confort II. They're much more expensive, but I
think, they are also much better. One puts the batterie into one of the
ear pieces, no extra box on the cable. In addition to their electronic
noise cancellation system, they're completely closed. The trains here in
Germany are a bit noisy, but with the Bose, it's nevertheless fun to
listen to spoken word stuff while travelling in such a train.
