Re: VBR Versus CBR
I'm also a Winamp user and I'm sticking to it. Re: VBR Versus CBR
From what I understand, VBR (variable bitrate) uses some kind of algorithm to adjust the bitrate according to what is going on in the file..IE, near silence will require less than would would be used at a constant bitrate. However, I have spoken to a few people I would consider a bit more serious about audio than I am, and they are really not fans of VBR at all. I can sort of see why. You're basically depending on this algorithm to decide how much of the sound you really want represented. It's a trust thing and I'm not sure I'd be willing to go that far. It can save you some disk space though, I guess - Original Message - From: Andrea Sherry sherr...@wideband.net.au To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2014 8:52 PM Subject: VBR Versus CBR Could I have just a quick explanation of the advantages/disadvantages please. In my XP system, no matter how I set Nero, I get VBR. I'm hoping for better from Win 7 64-bit. - Original Message - From: JM Casey crystallo...@ca.inter.net To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Sunday, July 06, 2014 11:59 AM Subject: Re: VBR Versus CBR From what I understand, VBR (variable bitrate) uses some kind of algorithm to adjust the bitrate according to what is going on in the file..IE, near silence will require less than would would be used at a constant bitrate. One consideration, at least in Winamp, is that if you want to go 45 minutes into a variable bit file, the time accuracy can't be trusted.
