RE: Off topic posts [was RE: internet 8]

2010-06-21 Thread Adrian Spratt
The JAWS list I subscribe to generates about twice as many messages as this
list does. Do you want to plow through three times as many messages as we
now get on this list? Screenreaders are essential to blind people, but do
you really want to stretch the subject matter of this list to everything
that involves our ears? Shall we have a long thread on why beeping traffic
signals are a good or bad idea? Shall we debate the merits of different
kinds of music? Fortunately, for the screenreader questions you and I both
need answers to, there are JAWS, WindowEyes and other screenreader lists.
The way Tom has focused this list, it ensures we get the sophisticated
advice on computer audio matters that you and many others have contributed
over the years.

This is good advice; Tom would make his life easier by identifying himself
as the moderator when making these decisions. Because he hasn't checked in
since this post, I'll confirm that he is the moderator. There isn't a better
one out there. For what it's worth, I agree that a question about how JAWS
works with IE8 isn't right for this list. The answer, as implied by another
lister and that would be given more appropriately on a JAWS list, is that
this particular error message in IE8 indicates that the user needs to
upgrade JAWS.

Are you the moderator of the list Tom, and if so, were you speaking as the
moderator? If that's the case, then I'd suggest you identify yourself as
such when making such a statement. Otherwise, you might just be taken as a
moderator want to be and either ignored or criticized. That's just my
advice.

BTW, I agree that the post in question was off topic, and I don't have any
problem with you pointing that out. As you know though, PC audio is a pretty
pervasive topic, so I think a lot of leniency is called for on such a list,
and in general, I think it's been a pretty lenient list. I don't have a lot
of patience though for people who think absolutely everything is fair game
for this list just because I use a screen reader which happens to use my
sound card. Ditto for people who won't submit to moderation.

Re: Off topic posts [was RE: internet 8]

2010-06-21 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I totally agree. Just because we use a screen reader and a speech
synthesizer doesn't make absolutely everything we do on a PC fair game
for this list. I for one wouldn't want to see discussions on how to use
Facebook, MS Office or even Windows itself on this list. There are other
mailing lists for those topics, and if I wanted to follow discussions on
those topics, I'd join those lists.

Either way, whatever we think is moot, since tom is the moderator of the
list and on the PC-Audio.org site, he says the following is the purpose
of this list:

PC-audio is a list for the discussion of any PC audio related topic such
as PC audio software like sound editors, audio players and audio
formats; and hardware

like sound cards, CD and DVD devices and so on.

While the subject matter is wide ranging, this is not a forum for the
discussion of non-pc-audio matters. There are many other lists for
political or other

discussions.

This is what I agreed to and expected when I joined this list. As with
any list, I also agreed to be moderated by the moderator of this list.

I also don't think Tom was out of line in anything he said or did when
he pointed out the original question was off topic for this list. He
wasn't insulting or condescending. As a blind person, I don't feel
insulted by anything Tom said. I think as responsible blind people we
should follow list rules, obey list moderators and act respectfully to
tom and others on this list. I don't think this is any different than
what should be expected of any list member, blind or sighted.

Ok, tom, and others the usage of a screen reader, which gives out audio
output to let a blind person hear what is being read is most certainly
audio related, how do you expect a person to use the audio products/ other
things that work with audio products such as winamp and the web with out
using a product that has audio output?
not trying to start a fight or argument session here but am trying to
enlighten everyone on the possibility that screen readers use audio to
comunicate the information on screen to blind people.
Sighted people use their eyes to astablish the usage of products and
services which blind people use a screen reader to enjoy their internet
experiences/ other hobbies they partake in.
