je 14 bis 20 Uhr

KunstWerk Köln
Deutz-Mülheimer-Str. 127

October 14: Open source your mobile devices
 Untethered workshop
 Date: Tues., Oct. 14, 7PM
 Location: Eyebeam, 540 W. 21st St., NYC
 Cost: Free

Got an old iPod? Install iPodLinux on it and turn it into an 8-bit
sequencer or touchscreen guitar. Or hook up an Arduino to your old
wifi router and discover what's possible.

This workshop is based on the idea of making iPods, wifi routers and
PDAs generative, by changing their software to enable creative
experimentation. Until recently, only very skilled hackers were able
to untether their own devices. Thanks to the work of so many
hackers, it's getting easier. Yes, there are still irksome technical
details master, but that's what this workshop is for!

Eyebeam resident Hans-Christoph Steiner, together with Chris the
Widget DiMauro will lead the workshop. They've been collecting a
wide range of devices and hacking them with free software and now
want to help you do the same.

Check the wiki to determine if your seemingly obsolete devices are
supported, and if so, bring them along: http://dev.eyebeam.org/

[PD] Performance involving Pd in Canberra!

2008-10-13 Thread Charles Martin
Hi List!

I'm performing the soundtrack for Cognition Part 2 which is a cross-
artform performance happening at the Street Theatre in Canberra this
week! I'm using Pd to analyse live percussion sounds and then control
an electronic backing part. We're also using Pd to create interactive
visuals in an installation artwork.

There's more information here:

Maybe I'll see some Pd fans there!

[counter] is a class provided by several libraries, but not by plain pd.
all versions of [counter] should be included in pd-extended, though.

i wouldn't recommend to use [counter], since all available versions
slightly differ from each other. it's likely, that your patches using
[counter] will break in case you change the order of loading the
libraries (or change to another pd-extended version etc) . also it's
something, that could be easily implemented with a handful of vanilla
classes:

[f ]X[+ 1] this is the simplest idiom of a counter

this is only an example. the advantages of creating your own
[your_counter] are:

- it will work consistently on every pd installation
- it doesn't require any externals
- you can make it to perfectly match your particular needs

there has been much discussion about counters on this list, just in case
you would like to read different opinions on this topic as well.
personally, i never have felt the need for a [counter] class.

the only way i know is to use some [makefilename] trickery. there is a
way to get a certain character out of a symbol.

a simple and easy and primarily flexible solution is still missing,
unfortunately. string processing is not pd's main goal. however, since
pd 0.40 it became possible to concatenate symbols freely, so in order to
complete pd's (admittedly limited) string processing capabilities, only
this little piece (splitting symbols) is missing. i asked miller several
times to include something for that task without success. as simple
things as getting the file name from an absolute path is not possible
yet in plain vanilla because of that :-(

You could rethink the way you use sends. If you want to get 1
something when sending something to a receiver called pitch-1 you
could instead use a receiver called pitch and send 1 something to
it. I.e.:

 old:

 [something(
 |
 [s p-1]

 [r p-1]
 |
 something

 new:

 [1 something(
 |
 [s p]

 [r p]
 |
 [route 1]
 |
 something

This idiom often is more flexible in other regards, too, and a trick to
remember.

ops! this version is very crappy ;) (just tested here)

Re: [PD] Sending Textures

2008-10-13 Thread Joseph Barrows
Hi Hans,
thanks - it does work! what had changed was that pix_texture wouldn't do
anything untill it was in a gem chain (which it didn't need in .39, but was
probably an accidental 'feature')

I realised after posting that i forgot my technical details, then got it
working (and also realised there are soo many combos that problems can be
hard to reproduce (esp with linux, seems to have an order of magnitude more
combinations than osy?/windoze)

I think that should work on 0.40.3. There are so many annoying technical
details with opengl related thigns, you should include the exact OS, CPU,
and graphics card info when posting about problems with Gem.

 Hi all,
I just upgraded to extended 0.40.3 and after much trouble re-locating all
but a few of my loadtime libs, have one last problem I cant fix:
I was able (under 0.39) send texture info (using the second output of the
 pix_texture), now it doesnt work!
see attached stills mixer.pd for the patch that used to work to distribute
nice sequence of image with fades to over hundred surfaces.
is this a bug or a bug fix?
