if you don't need audio, then don't use it :-)
starting Pd with the -noaudio flag should make it completely
independent from jack.

Ah, that sounds right - do you know achieve 3D rendering on one of
the displays? As mentioned, my xorg.conf is set as a big virtual
 desktop shared between two screens..:

exact details will depend very much on the graphics card and driver,
but you should aim for the projector display to be the first, or
primary, display, possibly use xorg.conf to turn on direct rendering
for that one and off for the other. With NVIDIA most of this can be
done with the driver GUI. Then either start pd from that display or
give gemwin the appropriate message - I forget what it is but it was
on this list a few weeks ago.

if you have to separate x displays running, you can start pd and its gui
on the first screen and by sending 'create :0.1' (or whatever id the
second display has) to [gemwin] you can create the gem window on the
external screen/projector.

i made different experiences with different video cards. with an ati
radeon mobility 9600 i was only able to have 3d acceleration on the
first head. with several nvidia cards i managed to have hardware
acceleration running on both heads. you probably find more info about
how to set up 3d acceleration on the ubuntu wiki. gem should print
something like 'GEM: Direct Rendering enabled!', when you start the
rendering, if 3d acceleration works.

 sir, you're genius. thank you.

hmm. actually, this isn't doing what i thought it was..

i don't really understand how it's working. what i want is an abstraction
that is able to determine whether a given $-argument in its _parent_ is
specified or not. at the moment, [d-default] works in such a way that i can
go [d-default $2 50], and if $2 in the current-level patch (ie the parent
of this instance of [d-default] is not specified, it will output 50.

can you explain the [1(-[makefilename $%d-test] voodoo? my intuition is
that [makefilename] ought to outlet '$1-test', but according to [print]
it's actually outputting \\$1-test, which looks like some kind of funky
escape sequence... over my head in any case.

cheers

[PD] workshop in fribourg / switzerland

2008-10-23 Thread Pierre Spring

hi all,

in the beginning of november, we are planning 3 days of workshop
around hacking and opensource in fribourg, switzerland.

the reason i am writing to the list, is that we'd love to have a pd
enthusiast who would come and present pd, followed by a little
workshop where everyone could set up pd and do their first steps with
it.

would this be the right place to look for s.o. like that?

we are an association called hackburg in fribourg/switzerland that
aims to set up a hackspace here in fribourg [1]. while still looking
for the right location, we try to arganize semi-annual workshops
around hacking and open source software...

if i caught your interest, i would be more than pleased to give you
further information about all of it ;)

yours ... pierre

[PD] [ot] PhD, mostly artistic

2008-10-23 Thread Thomas Grill
Hey all,
since i'm planning to start a PhD in the near future i'm trying to
figure out which institution would fit best to my (currently rather
blurry) intentions.
I'd like to research real-time interaction with electronic media
(emphasis on music), mostly from an artistic point of view.
Keywords would be digital representation of musical structure
elements/intentions/ideas, interaction with other performers,
improvisation/anticipation, interfaces of the physical to the virtual
world, etc.
Media and music/art theory would be important, media technology
should _not_ be the main focus. It would be great if the supervisor
is an active, renowned artist or specialized theoretician.
Europe would be preferred, overseas possible nevertheless.

any pointers?
many thanks,
Thomas

General pointer here Are there any articles you especially like?
Track down recent articles on the subjects you want and make a list of
researchers/artists who wrote them. Keep an open mind for extensions
of their research, and you just might find your preference for topics
in the process, too. It's sometimes a good idea to contact the person
you want to be your advisor ahead of time, too--that way you can find
out about availability, when admission happens, and talk about
research.

[PD] basic stats on a table?

2008-10-23 Thread B. Bogart
Hey all,

What is the best (least cpu usage) way to get some basic stats on the
content of a table?

I'm using a table to store arbitrary data, and would like to get things
like min/max so I can adjust the table bounds for the data it contains.

Any recommendations?

I currently have 100 data points, but hoping for 1000+.

untiling through the whole thing and doing the calc manually seems like
it would be resource inefficient.

Thanks,
B.

Actually any of the CC licenses are bad for software, and really in
general, IMHO. They are not compatible with the Debian Free Software
Guidelines, and every single one has an really vague attribution
 clause that should be avoided.

OK, what software license would you recommend for someone who wants to
place the 'share alike' restriction on their Pd patch? The GPL is really
geared towards compiled languages, and a lot of the wording is
irrelevant in the context of a Pd patch IMO.

I think the GPL is perfectly relevant here. If you want people to
distribute their changes, then the GPL will be totally effective for Pd
patches.

If you want to know more, check out my essay Copyright Is For Copying
 in the new book:

Great! I just added it to my Amazon wishlist.

If you are impatient, you can start with this blog entry, which then got
turned into that article, along with a bunch of research:

I should mention, mako hill writes quite a bit about this stuff too:
