Re: [PD] Max Smoother Audio than Pd?

2010-03-26 Thread Tim Blechmann
  But I wonder how this can be different in Max (note that I don't know
  Max at all (almost))

 i cannot comment on max, but comparing the implementations of
 supercollider's unit generators and pd's tilde objects shows a big
 different in the handling of parameter changes. pd uses new parameters
 instantly, while supercollider does a one-block interpolation, so it
 should sound `smoother'.

 I can't comment on supercollider, but while it's true what you say about
 Pd, it's very easy to overcome that by using [line~]s or even better
 [vline~].

only for objects supporting audio-rate arguments and at the cost of
performance ;)

[PD] dummy pix_crop question

2010-03-26 Thread Matteo Sisti Sette

Hi,

Not in the sense of a question asked by a dummy, but a question about a
dummy [pix_crop] :)

Well the question is this: given this setup:

[gemhead]
 |
[pix_film]
 |
[pix_crop]
 ...

When the pix_crop is set to 0,0 offset and a size equal to the input
image size, that is it is identical to no crop at all, will it consume
the same amount of CPU as a nontrivial crop?

And by the way, I suppose that (at least when the crop is actually
nontrivial) when the input image changes, performing the crop means
actually copying all the pixels within the cropped region, doesn't it?

thanks

I've got the same behaviour and I even haven't noticed it, since I've
always put the $0 as the prefix, not as the suffix. Try $0testreceive,
which should work.

In older Pd versions you weren't allowed to put dollar variables in the
middle or at the end of symbols, but only at the beginning. This was
changed to allow dollar variables at any place and also to have even
more than one dollar variable in one symbol. It seems, that it is not
working properly in the iemguis. any other dollar variable than $0 seems
to work at the end. Also $0 works at the end, if you use # instead:
testreceive#0. I think, this is a bug.

$0, $1 and all other variables should be at the beginning of the name
of your variable, not the end. This is the same whether it's a send,
an array or anything else.

Not anymore in recent versions of Pd, at least not in = 0.42.

Fantastic, that did the trick. I'll keep my variables as prefixes from now on.

Though ideally the gui objects should handle variables in the same way
as standard send and receive objects (and arrays), which can take
variables at the beginning, end, or in the middle.

Thanks everyone!

 Hi,

 When the pix_crop is set to 0,0 offset and a size equal to the input

 the same amount of CPU as a nontrivial crop?

most likely (but i don't know; every now and then there are
optimizations...)
i'd say: try it out :-)

nontrivial should consume more processing power (and bus transfer)
than the optimized trivial case.

 And by the way, I suppose that (at least when the crop is actually
 nontrivial) when the input image changes, performing the crop means
 actually copying all the pixels within the cropped region, doesn't it?

yes.

so you can perform weird stuff inline on the cropped image without
affecting the original image.

 that works fine for sending audio to and from live and pd, but not midi (as

 live, making it impossible to use.

Welcome to the world of interconnectivity ;)

What about OSC? Doesn't AL implement that?

Re: [PD] any mac OS terminal experts?

2010-03-26 Thread errordeveloper
Dan, i am sorry but your function { } business is teribly misleading!
it's gust alias pd=/path/to/app/bin/pd that anyone would ever need ..

well, do you wanna go like:

PD=//Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pd
THIS_COULD_BE_THE_ONLY_REASON_WHY_WE_NEED_IT=$MY_ERRORNO_CMD_NOT_FOUND

function pd {
if [ -x $PD ] then
`dirname $PD`/`basename pd`
else
echo COMMAND NOT FOUND, this is a redundant msg!
exit $THIS_COULD_BE_THE_ONLY_REASON_WHY_WE_NEED_IT
}

  Hey All

  I've recently started learning Ruby (on Ubuntu 9.04), part of what I'm

  The main trouble I'm having now is that I'm mostly using a Mac OS X machine
  which doesn't recognize the 'pdsend' and 'pdreceive' commands (as the linux
  shell does). I've tried opening the files with these names in
  /resources/bin which open a new terminal window and display what looks like
  the relevant -help text. But I can't seem to use these to send messages to
  and from pd from the Mac OS terminal. (in theory I could then automate this
  with Ruby).

  Any ideas, at all?

 I had the same issue when trying to use some scripts I made in Linux with pd.
 I solved it by adding some function wrappers to my ~/.bash_profile:

 # pd commandline
 function pd {
   /Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pd $@;
 }
 export -f pd

 function pdsend {
   /Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pdsend $@;
 }
 export -f pdsend

 Make sure to restart the terminal session for it to take effect.
