[PD] [PD-announce] Doctoral Studies and Visiting Researcher Activities at the Department of Media, Aalto University School of Art and Design

2011-02-24 Thread Koray Tahiroglu

 -- Doctoral Studies --

The first part of the annual application deadline to doctoral studies at the
Aalto University School of Art and Design (Helsinki/Finland) is approaching.

This is an announcement for those who are willing to continue further with
doctoral studies, especially with a specific interest in multidisciplinary
artistic/practice-based research. Applications are now being accepted for
2011-2012 academic year and must be delivered by March 15th.

Currently we are in the process of forming a new research group in the
Department of Media with a special interest in Sound and Physical Interaction.
Sound and Physical Interaction (SOPI) research group is focusing on sound and
its critical role in designing new ways of interactions between humans through
digital environments. The group's mission is to investigate and integrate
innovative research activities in sound design and physical interaction
practices on various scales to advance their role and impact in the future of
media and interactive art.

The scope of the SOPI research group includes all aspects of computational
analysis, synthesis and processing as applied to New Media practices;
communication, audio-visual production, computer music and interactive art.

The research group combines both the expertise in Digital Audio and Interaction
Design and the knowledge in Interactive Art and Product Design.

SOPI research areas include but not limited to;

- Sound in Product Design
- Multimodal Interfaces
- Physical Interaction
- Music Computing
- Mobile Music
- Auditory Displays
- Sonic Interaction
- Embodied approches in Participatory Music Experience
- Computational Models for Audiovisual Performances

I would like to encourage individuals to consider applications specifically
addressing related research areas in SOPI research group, Department of Media,
Aalto University School of Art and Design. You can contact me
(koray.tahiro...@aalto.fi) directly for any further information. Here it is the
link for application http://www.taik.fi/research/howtoapply/

 -- Visiting Researcher Activities --

SOPI research group also aims to organize International Research Cooperation
throughout the collaboration agreements with universities around the world and
the Aalto University School of Art and Design. This will include researcher's
mobility and joint research projects in collaboration with our european and
other partners. You can contact me (koray.tahiro...@aalto.fi) directly to

[PD] Extended View Toolkit

2011-02-24 Thread news

Hello All!

I want to announce the official release of the Extended View Toolkit.

http://puredata.info/Members/Weitsicht/extended-view-toolkit/

The Extended View Toolkit is a set of abstractions developed for the art
installation Extended View streamed.
It is intended to be an easy solution to experiment and realise panoramic video
and complex multiscreen projection
environments to createimmersive media experiences.

It features a set of abstractions that are able to combine multiple related
image-sources
(like video input, video playback) into aconsistent panoramic image.
The source-material, e.g. the camera to display has to be aligned horicontally,
since image-combination
is based on simple, openGL basededge-blending and not algorithmic pix by pixel
comparison.

Furthermore it features abstractions to create multi-screen, multi-projector
environments to enable
correct representation of (not only)panoramic material. The projection
abstractions can be combined
to form big screens out of multiple projectors with softedge betweenoverlapping
borders of single
projectors and contain a vertex model that can be adjusted in 4, respectively 9
points, so that
projections onchallenging geometric surfaces is possible.

Additionally, all abstractions are controllable via OSC-styled
send/receive-messages, which simplifies
OSC-based external control.

Also, since streaming video was part of the project, a gstreamer based
streaming solution was developed
by Peter Innerhofer to distribute panoramic/multistream video over network.
It can be found here: [https://github.com/peonic/streaming]

Libraries needed: mrpeachBuilt with pd 42.6 and GEM 92.3

Credits:
Shader Programming/openGL: Cyrille Henry
GEM: Marian Weger
Prototyping/GEM: Peter Venus
Streaming: Peter Innerhofer
Initiation/Supervision: Winfried Ritsch

A short demo-clip can be found here: [http://vimeo.com/20311051]

The project was made possible through support from IEM-Institute for Electronic
Music and Acoustics (iem.at)
and CO-ME-DI-A.
The CO-ME-DI-A project is supported by the Education, Audiovisual Culture
Executive Agency (EACEA)
of the European Comission forthe period 2007 - 2010
([http://www.comedia.eu.org/]).

Your feedback is welcome!

Hey Koray,
i hope you are well and busy.
I would be definitely interested in a research stay/artistic residence in
Helsinki after finishing my dissertation in April 2012.
My main field of interest is embodied interaction with recorded sounds which
includes auditory perception, machine listening, machine learning and
visualization, interface technology and sound synthesis, all in the context of
real-time performance, specifically free electro-acoustic improvisation.

This is the somewhat outdated blurb of my dissertation:

And some more concrete research work package on the way:

If your university is interested we could plan this quite comfortably ahead of
time.

all the best,

[PD] [PD-announce] pmpd v 0.10

2011-02-24 Thread cyrille henry

hello,
i've made a new pmpd version.
There is 3 new objects : pmpd, pmpd2d and pmpd3d.
this 3 objects should replace MSD. most of the time, they are compatible.
there is few differences anyway :
- few messages get renamed (both on input or output)
- there is a difference on the calculation of tLink Damping
- there is now a damping associate with each masses
- there are more messages to get simulation data

I encourage anyone to switch from MSD to pmpd, since MSD will not be maintained.

[PD] GEM problem with [alpha] on MacOS

2011-02-24 Thread Matteo Sisti Sette

Hi,

The attached patch works as expected in Linux, but in Mac OS the
rectangle with the texture generated by pix_movement is not transparent.
It is a black-and-white opaque image.

[pix_movement] SEEMS to be working as expected and generating the
correct alpha channel (judging from the values I got with a [pix_blob]
in mode 4), so I think it is [alpha] that is not actually enabling alpha.

I have Linux and don't have a Mac, and when I observed the issue I
couldn't take the time to do the obvious tests (such as trying with a
solid color with alpha and no texture at all, and trying pix_image with
a png image with alpha channel).

Can anybody confirm this?

I also tried sending [alpha] a 1 on the left inlet (not necessary in
linux), just in case alpha was disabled by default in MacOS but that
didn't help.

Is there some extra thing I have to do in order to have alpha work in
Mac OS?

I am using GEM 0.92.3 in Linux and I think the same in Mac (the one
bundled in the latest Pd Extended).

Thanks in advance

Ohhh,

I think I've realised what my problem is, not with [alpha] at all.

I think the colorspace being used by default happens to be RGBA on my

So a [pix_rgba] should solve my problem and elminate all differences.

Just out of curiosity, who is responsible for determining the color

in mode 4), so I think it is [alpha] that is not actually enabling alpha.

Thanks in advance
m.

 Hello All!

I want to announce the official release of the Extended View Toolkit.

 http://puredata.info/Members/Weitsicht/extended-view-toolkit/

The Extended View Toolkit is a set of abstractions developed for the art
 installation Extended View streamed.
It is intended to be an easy solution to experiment and realise panoramic
 video and complex multiscreen projection
 environments to createimmersive media experiences.

It features a set of abstractions that are able to combine multiple
 related image-sources
(like video input, video playback) into aconsistent panoramic image.
The source-material, e.g. the camera to display has to be aligned
 horicontally, since image-combination
is based on simple, openGL basededge-blending and not algorithmic pix by
 pixel comparison.

Furthermore it features abstractions to create multi-screen,
 multi-projector environments to enable
correct representation of (not only)panoramic material. The projection
 abstractions can be combined
to form big screens out of multiple projectors with softedge
 betweenoverlapping borders of single
projectors and contain a vertex model that can be adjusted in 4,
 respectively 9 points, so that
projections onchallenging geometric surfaces is possible.

Additionally, all abstractions are controllable via OSC-styled
 send/receive-messages, which simplifies
 OSC-based external control.

Also, since streaming video was part of the project, a gstreamer based
 streaming solution was developed
by Peter Innerhofer to distribute panoramic/multistream video over
 network.
It can be found here: [https://github.com/peonic/streaming]

Libraries needed: mrpeachBuilt with pd 42.6 and GEM 92.3

 Credits:
 Shader Programming/openGL: Cyrille Henry
 GEM: Marian Weger
 Prototyping/GEM: Peter Venus
 Streaming: Peter Innerhofer
 Initiation/Supervision: Winfried Ritsch

A short demo-clip can be found here: [http://vimeo.com/20311051]

The project was made possible through support from IEM-Institute for
 Electronic Music and Acoustics (iem.at)
 and CO-ME-DI-A.
The CO-ME-DI-A project is supported by the Education, Audiovisual
 Culture Executive Agency (EACEA)
of the European Comission forthe period 2007 - 2010
 ([http://www.comedia.eu.org/]).

Myself and Jamie Tittle. The speed difference between YUV and RGBA is

:D Hahahha

I meant which object. I mean, if it is pix_video who decides which
color space to use (as opposed to the OS or somebody else outside GEM)
then I guess the same color space could be used by default in all platforms.

Or is there a particular reason to prefer rgba by default on linux?

I think all unnecessary differences among platform should be avoided
even in default values (otherwise one is obliged to set everything
explicitely)...
