Re: [PD] GEM quirky-ness on OS X

2012-01-16 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

It seems to me that this should feature prominently in the docs somewhere.
Something like "[pix_movie] is for special cases where you want to enable
certain optimizations that don't work everywhere". Or even better, it would be
great if [pix_movie] did work everywhere.

Pd-vanilla 0.43 should use the built-in Tcl/Tk, which is 8.4 on 10.5 and 8.5 on
10.6 and newer. If there is another version of Tcl/Tk installed into
/Library/Frameworks, Pd-vanilla will use that one.

Pd-extended 0.43 includes its own custom version of Tcl/Tk 8.5 that takes
precedence of anything that is installed on the user's machine.

i suspect [1] has something to do with using the pd open or close 'message'

it's not clear to me how to use this object, there's no help.
connecting the inlet with a loadbang causes Pd/GEM to quit immediately.
leaving the object by itself, with a print on the first outlet, gives
nothing.

i tried to use more then 16 k for the VideoRam: this also causes Pd/GEM to
quit at rendering the first picture.

just now i found in the system message.log after the crash:
pdextended[1702]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp bfcc1acc error 4 in
libpulse.so.0.12.2[11+4]

doing it again:

pdextended[2045]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp bfb87f3c error 4 in
libasound.so.2.0.0[11+c3000]

going back to the default VideoRam (= no changes made by me)

pdextended[1431]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp bfe1aecc error 4 in
libICE.so.6.3.0[11+15000]

should i make a bug report on this? (i'm on Pd-ext 42.5 with GEM 92.3)

or what does "every time at a change in the rendering" mean exactly?

try to find the object that actually causes the error.
you can use a [GEMglReportError] that will output a warning if an error
was raised since the last time any instance of [GEMglReportError] was
called (the error state is also reset inside [gemwin] during each
render-cycle..which is what causes the message to appear)

for the intel815 (which i have on the PIII) it is possible to set a value
for VideoRam
in xorg.conf.
i made it 16384 kb: now Pd/GEM does not quit.
the patch goes through the motions, there's a GEM-window,
but only a white rectangle where a picture should be.

GEM tells me that direct rendering is enabled,
but still only 8 clor bits.

and now every time at a change in the rendering:
GL: invalid operation

the build of 20120111 on Ubuntu Lucid works alright.
there are still a lot of tclpd-loader messages (blank lines in 'normal'
console),
but no crash or strange behavior.

OT why is it that in Linux-Pd the right-click needs to be helt while moving
to a choice,
and in Windows not, the latter being much more pleasant.

it's at the max of 64 Mb.

do you have 16 pix_image?
if you load 16 time the same image, you need 16 time more memory than
necessary.

then, you could use a single gemhead / pix_image / pix_texture to load the
image and share the texture Id.
then using gemhead/pix_texture(to load the texture Id)/pix_coordinate on
your abstraction.

also, you can only resize the image in order to fit in the available GPU
memory.

anyway, pd/GEM should not exit without warning. pd bug report should be
made.

i have 16 pieces, which are parts of 1 big picture; like with a puzzle they
have to be displayed at their specific coordinates.
there's no pix_image involved.
(the abstraction is attached)

ah, ok.
you're using a pix_buffer. good, the image is not loaded many time.

so the only solution i can imagine is to resize the image in order to use less
memory.
