Re: [PD] A present

Andrew, the game is brilliant, and works flawlessly here. Your code is hella
messy though. :P

if the green circle is in the red circle, and you manage to keep your snake
perfectly within the green circle, I think you should still accumulate
points though, at the moment, you loose points

You should post it in the forum when ready. Infact, the forum would love to
have your GEM wisdom, if you don't already lurk around those areas.

Thanks for the christmas present, and here is my (reply) xmas present for

 Hey all you pd people
I've decided to sent out an open invitation to try a patch I've been
working on, a little game, in fact. Its a work in progress so I'd love some
feedback, but if you enjoy trying it out that'd be great.

Re: [PD] webcam in GEM on eeepc

2009-08-18 Thread Arif Driessen
Amazing response both in time and effectiveness. I thank you all greatly.

three annoying newbie questions however:

Is this the package I need to get? http://sourceforge.net/projects/pd-gem/

Do I need to uninstall GEM first or do anything to Pd before or after to
recognise (insmod style) and work with the new GEM

Do I follow the standard compiling route i.e.

./configre
make
make install

(I have only ever patched my kernel once. that is as far my linux technical
proficiency goes)

Many many thanks for the time out you have spent on me.

current development version works fine. so you should use the svn to
download Gem latest source code, and compile it yourself.

you can also ask Iohannes to make release more often ;-)

 Hi guys,

I normally stick to the forums but I've come here because I fear this is
going to be a little too in depth. (I shall post the answer to the forum
 afterwards however).

I know the GEM developers have discussed this over here:
 http://www.mail-archive.com/gem-...@iem.at/msg00098.html

 But I'm not a GEM developer! :)

My issue is, [pix_video] won't see my camera under any conditions (in
GNU/Linux), whilst mplayer tv:// in the terminal or the Cheese Webcam Booth
are both very happy to. I simply don't know where to begin. But really
really desire this feature (it's one of the main reasons i bought the eeepc
 701)

Running eeebuntu lxde beta 1 (a cut down ubuntu/debian)

Is this a common problem? Are there some standard procedures to fixing
this? like reinstalling certain packages? e.t.c.

There's no rush here, but I'm sure it's a somewhat popular issue since the
eeepc must be a popular medium for Pure Data

 Thanks very much everyone.

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] reware howto video

Hans, this is great. And just what I need to begin taking guitar pedals to
the next level.

I have all sorts of pd patches I'd love to get on the go. But not the money
to bring a laptop with me on tour. If i can plug in my trumpet into a Palm
TX with pd, and control it all via a modified USB game controller (switches
and variable pedals) I'll be in heaven.

I look forward to it.

[PD] Newbie: Dollar sign explanation needed

2008-10-25 Thread Arif Driessen
Hello all.

Since starting Uni this year I have gotten really into Pd! I'm still reading
up and learning the basics but have tried and tried to get my head around
the $ parameter (parameter?) but can't

Can someone break it down into a very basic explanation so I can take that
with me to the help files for further understanding.

As I see it, $ pretty much denotes storage of a variable, either float or
symbol, and works only locally. When added to an object it means: take
incoming value and store it under $1 (or $2 e.t.c) for recall later. If
there is a series of in incoming values $1 will always refer to the first
value and $2 to the second. Sometimes you don't want to recall it, but need
to tell the object to store a value in order to process it with the very
next action, such as in

OBJECT: openpanel MESSAGE: read $1 destination OBJECT: soundfiler

Am I right, somewhat right, or dangerously wrong?

And lastly I get this in the Pd window everytime it starts up (Pd extended
on Mac), is that heathly?:

Re: [PD] Newbie: Dollar sign explanation needed

2008-10-25 Thread Arif Driessen
Thanks Andy,

Took me a few reads to get my head around but I think I've got it now. Thank
you. :)

(Unfortunately, abstraction was the other word that plagued me, I forgot to
mention)

On Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 3:43 PM, Andy Farnell [EMAIL PROTECTED]wrote:

 Hi Afif,

The dollar can have more than one meaning depending on where it is used.

When it is in a message box, like [1 $1 3 $2( it behaves as a substitution
operator. The nth element of a list will be substituted in the $n position
and the list message is passed on. So, if a two element list 2, 4 was
presented to the message box above the result would be a four element
 list 1, 2, 3, 4

When it is used in other object boxes in the form $1 or $2 etc it becomes
the $nth parameter of an abstraction. In other words, if you create an
abstraction (separate pd file) called [myabs] and create an instance like
[myabs 10 20 30] then inside that instance $1 will have a value of 10,
 $2 a value of 20 and $3 will equal 30.

A special use is where you declare $0. This always has a unique value
per patch (or abstraction instance). It can be used to prefix a variable
name so that it is unique. For example, arrays must always have a unique
name. You can create an array called $0-a in an abstraction, and if you
make several copies of that abstraction the array names will not clash.
