Workshop on Practice-Based Research in New Interfaces for Musical Expression

NIME 2014 Workshop: Goldsmiths, London, UK www.nime2014.org

Workshop website: http://www.creativityandcognition.com/NIMEWorkshop/

Submission Deadline: May 12, 2014 (No extensions!)
Notification: May 16, 2014
Workshop date: June 30, 2014

Practitioner-researchers in new musical instrument/interface design often
set themselves multiple challenges: they seek to design and implement new
technologies, create and perform new works, examine and evaluate what they
have done and, finally, articulate what has been learned in the process.

To do this effectively requires careful consideration of the links between
creative work and research. Failing to do so can lead to technical
research which lacks relevance to creative practice or, conversely,
creative work where the broader contribution is unclear.

This workshop focuses on the relationships between creative practice and
research - and blends of the two - with particular emphasis on new musical
interface/instrument design.

Combining practice and research leads to a series of difficult questions,
including:

- What constitutes a contribution in the context of practice-based research
in new musical instrument/interface design?

- How do we show that we have made a contribution? What kinds of evidence
are appropriate?

- Do we always need to evaluate our interfaces/instruments? What does
evaluation mean in creative contexts? Are there fixed criteria?

- What is the status of the work (performance, instrument, composition,
exhibition, ...) itself? Is it possible to understand the contribution of
practice-based research without experiencing the work? What is the role of
documentation?

- What is the place of personal reflection in relation to practice-based
research?

PARTICIPATION
We invite 2-4 page papers or position papers for presentation and in-depth
discussion. Submissions from students are welcome and encouraged. Topics
may include, but are not limited to:

- Case studies of practice-based research in the area of NIME.

- Theoretical and conceptual framings of practice-based research in NIME
 contexts.

- Personal reflections on past or ongoing practice-based research projects.

- Techniques and methods for examining people’s experiences with new
instruments/interfaces.

- Approaches and methods from other domains and cultures.

- Radical ideas, new approaches.

Papers will be peer-reviewed and accepted papers will be published in the
workshop proceedings and archived on the workshop website. After the
workshop, selected participants will be invited to expand their papers for
a special issue of Leonardo Transactions.

Once selected, all workshop participants are required to register for at
least one day of the NIME conference. You can register at http://www.
nime2014.org/registration/

Important Dates for GRADUATE STUDENT SYMPOSIUM SUBMISSIONS
Submissions due: 1st March, 2013
Notifications: 1st April, 2013
Graduate Student Symposium: 17th June 2013

The Graduate Student Symposium is a forum in which postgraduate students
meet and discuss their work with each other and a panel of experienced
researchers and practitioners. The Symposium itself will be held on the
17th of June, with a table for the participants to be reserved during
the conference dinner. We welcome applications in any of the disciplines
and approaches concerned with Creativity and Cognition (see the Call for
Papers for further details on topics).

Applicants should be Ph.D. students with an already well-established
direction of research relevant to Creativity and Cognition, but whose
research would benefit from guidance provided by peers and senior
colleagues at the Graduate Student Symposium. Each application should
provide:

* A short written paper (no more than TWO pages in SIGCHI format)
* A brief letter of support from the student's principal adviser
* A brief 2-3 paragraph biographical sketch on a separate page together
with a list of any relevant publications

The paper should describe ongoing work and summarize the student's
thesis, or highlight a particular aspect - therefore it should be
first-authored by the student. Advisors' or supervisors' letters of
support should indicate that the work has reached the appropriate level
of maturity for presentation in this venue. The letter of support and
biographical sketch should be submitted together with the paper on the
conference submission site. Please note that Graduate Student Symposium
submission, unlike paper submission, is not anonymous. For templates,
please see the conference website under Submission.

Participants will be selected based on their anticipated contributions
to the breadth and depth of the intellectual discussions of the
symposium. Selected students will be expected to give a short
presentation of their work, followed by discussion with the panel and
the other student participants.

The University of Technology, Sydney will host the International Conference
on Creativity and Cognition from the 17th to the 20th of June 2013. The
organising committee would like to invite you to join us in Sydney for
another conference in this very successful series.

For 2013 the conference theme will be `Intersections and Interactions', due
to the inter-disciplinarity that is inherent in the study of creativity and
cognition. June 2013 will be an exciting time for Sydney, as the
International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA 2013) will run from the 7th
to 16th, as well as the Vivid Festival of Arts from the 24th of May until
the 10th of June.

Creativity is sometimes thought of as being a human cognitive capacity to
solve problems. Creativity is sometimes thought of as a process that
occurs in the intersections between individuals, domains and fields.
Creativity is sometimes viewed as a characteristic of an artifact, such as
an artwork, or of a concept, such as a new scientific theory, that is both
novel and valuable.

The Creativity and Cognition Conference Series aims to be a common meeting
ground where individuals can interact with others from different domains
and fields to explore and share a variety of information, observations,
insights and ideas about the human capacity to creatively solve problems
and produce novel and valuable artifacts in their context and culture.

As a single track conference the Creativity and Cognition conference series
establishes a forum where people can “rub minds” with and hear about the
work of others from a variety of domains and perspectives as they report
and describe their engagement with that most complex of
intersections–creativity and cognition.

To this end, Creativity and Cognition 2013 seeks papers, posters and
demonstrations from individuals and teams of people working in any of a
variety of domains who seek to improve our understanding of this
multifaceted domain that engages the interest and attention of people from
so many different fields.

General topics may include, but are not limited to:

The study of creativity in an individual, in a group or a team, or in a
particular cultural context.

• Discussions of ways to foster creativity though the design, development
and/or deployment of pedagogy, of technology support tools for creative
work, or of environments and systems of support for creativity. Of
particular interest is work on creative technology support tools that
involves collaborations between artists and technologists.

• Research reports on empirical assessment of various aspects of creativity
and cognition that seek to deal with evaluation metrics, measures, and
constraints using methodological approaches such as case studies,
experimentation, modeling, or simulation.

• Explorations of new or only partially explored intersections in
creativity such as personal creativity in everyday life, the role of
emotion in creativity, brain event scanning and recording, and any novel
design and evaluation ideas that may one day be valuable to the Creativity
and Cognition community.

• Also of particular interest are papers, posters and demonstrations that
describe artworks/performance works, etc. and that explore and reflect on
the nature of creativity, the act of creation, and/or artistic expression.

All submissions are to be anonymised, and presented in ACM format and
templates can be found on the Submission page of the conference website.

Papers and posters are to be submitted by 17 Dec 2012 through the easychair
paper submission system. Papers are to be a maximum of 10 pages, while
poster submissions are to be a maximum of 4 pages in length.

Demonstrations are also invited, with a maximum of 2 pages in length, and
will be due on the 1st of March 2013.

[PD] PD on Gumstix - Duplex Audio Problems

2010-09-30 Thread Sam Ferguson

Hi PDers-

I have compiled PD (not PDa) for use on Gumstix overo, but I'm having
a couple of problems getting full duplex audio.

I can do either in or out ok (eg. -noadc), but asking for in and out
gives:

/dev/dsp invalid argument read/write
and then switches to out only.

I can do audio in/out on gumstix (using arecord | aplay) with no
problem, so it seems something specific about pd. I compiled pd-0.42-5
on the actual gumstix board with gcc.

Has anyone had this problem before - perhaps not with Gumstix?

Cheers
Sam
