[PD] pdpedia spam reduction idea

2009-06-14 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Since we don't really use the Talk/Discussion pages, and they seem to
be the most spammed, we could just remove them:

Ah yeah, FYI that link is not the Main Page, but the Talk page for
the Main Page, which is technically a different page. And I just
realized these are in 'mediapool' section, so I guess we can't say
THE main page, since each language has a main page.

There was indeed lots of spam there, in fact that page ws only ever
spam, it never had content. That's easy to handle, just use the
delete tab, it even removes it from the Recent Changes. If a
page is only spam, then the delete option is perfect.

http://wiki.puredata.info/mediapool/index.php?
title=Special:Recentchangeslimit=500days=30

I am not opposed to trying other spam measures. But I do think we
should try the built-in tools first. I think IOhannes' sounded worth
trying: a captcha only for edits with links in them. Any volunteers
to set them up?

not being a very active wikipedia user, i nevertheless seem to remember
that they use captchas (yes indeed) for verification if (and only if- i
think) you are adding URLs to a page.
this makes spamming sites much less attractive.

i know that you are opposed to captchas, but i still think it is a good
compromise between not having to create accounts and a reasonable
protection against spam.

Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. I think it is hard to argue

Re: [PD] pdpedia spam

2008-01-25 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

I just discovered the protect tab, it allows you to restrict
editing per-page. Since the spam so far has only been on a few
pages, I tried turning on the protect mode to see if that is a
manageable solution.
