of course, this is possible, even very simple:

[gemhead]
|
[alpha]   [slider with range 0-1]   - connect this to the 4th inlet 
|/   [colorRGB]
[colorRGB]
|
[some geo aka. gem-object]

you might also look at the helpfiles of:

[alpha]
[colorRGB]
[color]
