Thanks for explaining the reason I was going nuts thinking I was doing
some stupid mistake somewhere. Nothing crucial, I just wanted to create

you can use the PdDroidParty widgets plus some of the native gui objects

Hi,

on desktop it's easy: just bundle Pd with your patch, add a simple
starter script and maybe use the KIOSK plugin to hide the console.

Mobile is tricky, because of the locked down nature of the platforms
(especially iOS). There are projects to run Pd patches on Android
(http://droidparty.net/) and iOS (http://danomatika.com/code/pdparty)
with some compatibility between the two
(http://danomatika.com/code/pdparty/guide#pddroid-party-compatibility).
You have to follow some conventions, though.

If you design your patch for PdParty and/or PdDroidParty and don't use
mobile specific features, it should automatically work in desktop Pd
vanilla. I think @Dan can tell you more about it.

Re: [PD] PdDroidParty: playing sound files?

I understand that feeling, however file playback is pretty fundamental.

sorry I guess my question should have been longer, something like: is
there any technical reason to why there is no any example of playing a
sound file in PdDroidParty?

I assumed there should be a technical reason, probably related to the
way Android handles paths, to explain why there is no such an example.

As for PdParty, I have put quite a lot of work into making PdParty run
patches as closely as possible to desktop Pd, requiring only a couple
specific steps regarding GUIs for the same projects to run on both
desktop and iOS. For more advanced GUIs, it's often useful to write the
guts of a project in a patch which his then opened with
platform-specific wrapper patches containing the GUI.

thanks for the tip

PdDroidParty cannot make as much of a promise for this regarding GUIs,
but it does seem to handle most of the common use cases.

for me it has always worked fine both in Android and iOS

Re: [PD] (PdParty) not detecting .pdz files under latest iOS

2019-12-16 Thread enrike

We experienced some problems with PdParty not recognising the .pdz files
under latest iOS. We installed PdParty, sent the .pdz via whatsapp or
downloaded it from a link. Then we tried to open it but PdParty was not
in the list of applications available to open the .pdz.

In that case, you can *always* connect the phone directly to computer
with iTunes installed and copy the files via iTunes File Transfer.
Otherwise, the built-in web server will work over WiFi. The steps are
listed in the User Guide.

ok, I will have a look. Up to now we hardly had any problem thats why I
never read the user guide in depth.

I think this is fixed but just not in a release on the iOS app store yet
via https://github.com/danomatika/PdParty/pull/70. If not, I haven't had
time to do a formal PdParty release yet but I've been meaning to get to
it this winter.

This happened with two phones, both running the latest iOS. Another guy
with an older iphone did not experience this issue. In one case
reinstalling PdDroid several times solved the issue but I am not 100%
sure,

... PdParty (iOS) or DroidParty (Android)? I assume the former.

sorry to be unclear. It was an iphone, the owner reinstalled PdParty
several times and also got sent the pdz via different ways (whatsapp,
download, email). I am not sure which one worked because I had to many
things to deal with at the same time :( "every one running around like
headless chickens" kind of situation...

the situation was a bit chaotic as this happened just one hour
before a concert with seven musicians involved in the middle of a bigger
festival and everyone was stressed and in a hurry so I could not test it
properly.

Which iPhones running which iOS versions? I bet the difference is iOS
12+ bringing the Files app which may have broken the document type
declarations used by PdParty.

I dont know, one just said she had recently upgraded the iOS and that
sounded to me like it could connected to the problems. If you are
interested I can contact them to ask specifically the models.

*hint hint* I am behind the curve with testing new iOS versions and
devices as I'm happily running my robot cowboy rig with PdParty on an
iPhone 5S. If anyone would like more up-to-date support and works for an
institution which supports the creation of art/music and associated
tools, especially supporting a production which utilizes PdParty,
throwing a newer device at a single developer who puts out the app for
free would be helpful.

We already used the same patch months ago and there was no problem. The
same patch was totally fine under android, we actually solved the
problem by replacing the faulty iphone with an android phone.

Ouch.

Sorry not to be more precise, I dont have iphones around to test it
properly. If someone could test it would be good to know if this is a
global iOS problem or something we did wrong.

It is most likely nothing you did wrong.

[PD] autotune external for OSX anyone?

Hi

A student working on latest OSX wants to test autotune-like techniques.
After checking online I found that pd-l2ork comes with an autotune external.

However we are using the stand-alone Malinette PD

copied the external binary file to our PD extra folder but then we get
this error on start-up

/Users/blahblah/malinette-soft-mac-master/externals/autotune
~/autotune-.pd_darwin: mach-o, but wrong architecture

I guess the autotune extra is compiled for a different architecture to
that of our particular PD version. Any ideas how to go about this? or
maybe alternatives?

Compiling the code is not an option in this case, I don't have a mac I
could setup to compile and I would not like to mess the student's machine.

this does deploy PD + many libraries into a standalone version of PD. It
is easy to add new ones or modify the .bat/.sh they provide to meet your
needs

For several years now, I've been deploying Pd-extended in my teaching
environments, and linking to the same installers so that my students
could install exactly the same version on their own machines. (I am
perfectly aware that Pd-extended has not been maintained for some
time.)

I would welcome advice about a strategy to deploy a monolithic "same
everywhere" version of PD. Ideally, this would be with a set of
libraries that are fixed at a given version and work the same on MacOS
and Windows.

I'm leaning toward Purr-data, but as I understand it does not yet have
Gem on MacOS. Is that right?

Alternatively, would there be a way for me to install PD-vanilla and
Deken install some libraries in such a way that I can deploy a copy
with all dependencies in a single folder?

In essence, the constraints have to do with the fact that software
installations are managed by our IT team, so I need to give them a
specific set of instruction and be reasonably guaranteed that the
results will work. Neither students (nor I) can I install software on
those machines. It's also important to me to insure that students can
bring their work to and from university to home, and that the work in
progress that send me opens and works on my machine.

Any good suggestions?

Thanks,

10 message to my instance of syncjams would actually be output by the
state, a kind of internal loop. but it does not

is this the intended behaviour? thanks!

This is how the library works now, but I do not think it makes sense
from a user perspective.

yes I know what you mean. In my case I think it would be nice to be able
to work without connecting the computer to a network. Specially being
able to set the BPM with the argument. Another scenario would be when
solo rehearsing a part of a piece developed for group network
performance, if there is no wifi connection the BMP and messages wont
work. But I agree it is not the most common scenario nowadays.

I will think about how to make this work as you would expe
one more thing, I would like to have a toggle displaying the connection
status, is there an specific message the syncjams object issues when the
connection is ready? I am checking but I cannot see any coming out of
the object that I could use for this.

thanks

[PD] syncjams with no connection

2019-04-16 Thread enrike

hi

Couple of issues about syncjams library. I am using it in a place with
no wifi connection and I noticed

- The argument BPM does not have any effect
syncjams $0/syncer, bpm 60, namespace syncjams, port 23232

- I would expect that a set-state message would actually work locally
even if there is no internet connection (I notice there is a connect
127.0.0.1 inside the syncjams object) . So issuing a set-state /test 10

I tried with a zip but it does not work. It just opens each of the
files in the zip.

Does "it just opens each of the files in the zip" mean the OS unzips the
zip file and then calls PdParty for each patch or does it mean that
PdParty gets the zip and unzips it into the application directory but
without a containing folder?

(sorry I dont use iPhone and I have to "steal" my partner's one to run
the tests) The mail program seems to unzip the zip and displays all the
files in the fip in a horizontal scroll list. I dont get to see PdParty
at all. It looks to me like PdParty does not get involved at all.

It would be great to have it working before the weekend. we have a
performance, but we can borrow an android phone. so there is no hurry,

We'll see. In the meantime, I'm assuming you've read the section in the
PdParty user guide about how copy patches onto a device? There is a
built-in WebDAV server that facilitates this:
http://danomatika.com/code/pdparty/guide#detailed-instructions If you're
just deploying to a set number of devices once, this would work fine and
is what I use mainly.

yeah I tried that as well. I could not connect to the phone, it did not
allow me. bear in mind that I am all the time jumping onto the iphone
when I see it around and "free" :) so it is quite difficult to be
methodic about running tests

but it would be great to find out how to do this.

There is no "find how to do this." It either works or doesn't. If it
doesn't, then I don't have the app configured correctly to tell the OS
what files are associated with it. This did work a while ago, but
perhaps something has changed in newer versions of iOS.

ok I am going to check too which version of iOS is running. I should
have done it the first time it failed.

You can also try a regular .zip. PdParty should be associated with .pd,

hi

I am trying to test in iPhone a patch built using PDDroidParty. My
problem is that together with the droidparty_main.pd I have a folder
with pd abstractions.

For me the best solution to install the patches would be to send them
into an email or some kind of message same as we do in Android: all
zipped together in a .dpz file. We are going to be sending this to a
group of people with different types of phones and we need to get this
up and running as soon as possible.

However the iphone does not recognises the .pdz as a PdParty file and it
does not give the option to copy it to the PdParty folder. I can send
them the .pd files attached individually but then I have to one by one
copy them into the folder and they are a few of them.

Is there any other easy to use method to send them all into the PdParty
folder?

thanks

my experience is with PDDroidparty, I am not sure if it is very
different with MobMuPlat. If you can stick to PDpDroidarty like
developing system it makes the working process way more simple than
going into something like OpenFrameworks + libPD

some years ago I tried other options (OF, Processing, Python), from all
of them Processing was the easier one for me, but it was only Android at
the time. not sure now. However using PDDroidParty is by far way easier
than any of those, but you are limited by the GUI elements you can use.

I dont think you can get GEM working on android. All the externals I
have used are pure pd, no binaries.

So...
- what ways of porting pd patches to a mobile device do you know?
- Are there restrictions for using external libraries like zexy or
cyclone that I need to take into account while developing my patch on OSX?
- Is it possible to use GEM in the pd patch when it has to be running a

What I have heard about so far is:
- libPd
- hvcc https://github.com/enzienaudio/hvcc
- MobMuPlat (probably not going to be considered as I need a custom

My "feeling" is that whenever it has happened, it has always been on

random to get any solid evidence or see any pattern. We will continue

One thing that would make SyncJams more reliable is if I removed the

What I should have done, and what I hope to work on in future, is to
keep a very tight focus on clock sync. This would reduce the amount of
traffic on the network to a single UDP packet per tick.

(I am fighting now with PdDroidPublisher as we would need to have an
apk that we can just install into participants mobiles. The
PdDroidPublisher documentation is outdated as far as I can see and I
far from being an expert in Android Studio configuration, lets see)

If you can get the PdDroidParty apk installed on the devices then it's
possible to distribute the patch as a zip file to the devices quite
easily. You can zip the patch folder and then rename the zip so it has a
`.dpz` extension. If a user has PdDroidParty installed and they receive
a .dpz file by email or click on a link to a .dpz file then it should
automatically open in PdDroidParty.

This still means you have to install two things (the DroidParty apk and
the .dpz file) but maybe it's easier than creating a custom apk and
easier than copying the folder onto SD cards one by one.

ok, this is actually quite a good method and it is rather painless
compared to installing and fighting with android studio/sdk/ndk etc...

More info about this can be found in the "Sharing your patches" section

SyncJams might work for you:

https://github.com/chr15m/SyncJams

The algorithm it uses is tolerant of adverse network conditions. All
devices run their own internal clock and the clocks converge on a
consensus "current tick".

The algorithm is very simple: every device broadcasts its current tick
over the network. If a device receives a tick which is higher & earlier
than it expected it immediately resets its own clock to that new timing.

What this means in practice is the smallest (i.e. best) point-to-point
ping time between any two participating patches is the closest that the
clocks will get in sync. On a WiFi LAN this is generally on the order of
1 to 3 milliseconds which is close enough for most musical applications.
In my experience devices converge on that value quite quickly after
joining the network.

Here's a video of Chris Rice aggressively changing the BPM from which
the devices manage to recover after a second or two:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNvD-KQhR9k

Here are two Android devices syncing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5tlEZwttBM

I've been planning to revisit the project to simplify it and port to
Supercollider etc. for some time but who knows if I'll ever get around
to that.

Cheers,

Chris.

[PD] chronometer + metronome that syncs multiple Android/iOS devices over network?

2019-03-05 Thread enrike

hi all

We need a chronometer that runs in sync in multiple devices at the same
time. Target platform is android, and if possible iOS as well. We are
thinking also that it would be great to have some sort of metronome
running together with the chronometer (we have trained musicians
together with non trained musicians in the ensemble).

So far we have been using http://chronograph.io/ so far but it is not
100% reliable, we had a few issues last performance (one device was ~1
sec behind the others, and often during rehearsals we had problems with
the start signal not being sent at all).

I am considering the possibility of implementing this functionality in
PD using PDdroidparty and OSC. Because we dont like the tools we have
found online. We found some nice metronomes but the only one that seems
to sync is only iOS. And we do need the chronometer (in fact priority n1
is the chronometer right now). I thought maybe someone can point into
some existing alternative before I try to reinvent the wheel.

One of the biggest issues I foresee is to find an easy and quick way for
the master device to find out the available slaves in the network. I
would not like to have to, one by one, find and then type the IPs of
each single device in the master device, although the master could be a
laptop running PD and that would make it easier to type them...

thanks in advance for any feedback

Quicktime isn't needed for Gem video playback, but FFMPEG should be at hand, to
provide fast and quick video conversion.

my best experience with Gem on win is using an MJPEG codec within an .avi
container. you will probably need ffdshow codecs (or another codec pack that
contains mjpeg) to play them.

make sure to have 32bit versions of PD, Gem, AND your codecs !

another fine codec that works with Gem is UT (higher quality images but larger
filesices). in general all image-based codecs for the .avi container that are
installed and running on windows should work. wmv probably too

Re: [PD] pix_delay limits

2018-07-19 Thread enrike

thanks, I just checked and I am not sure how to understand the results

- pix_delay 3000 happily goes up to 83% RAM and stays there once the
delay is full
- pix_delay 4000 crashes when the RAM reaches 43%

are there other consumers of memory?

yeah RAM usage is around 38% before opening PD

could it be that pix_delay 4000 requires more RAM than the available BUT
it only crashes after a while when the system or PD realises that there
is not enough RAM?

Pd doesn't know anything about that.

however, with modern OS, you can overcommit memory, that is, you can ask
for more memory than is actually available, and the OS will happily give
you a handle to that (non-existant) memory, hoping that by the time you
want to use it, some other processes have already released their memory
claims.
you might well experience this.

you can check the size required to store your image data with roughly:
  ***
with being 4 for the typical RGBA pixes (the default on linux
and w32) and 2 for YUV (the default on macOS, iirc).

if you don't care about alpha, you could convert the pixes to YUV before
sending them to [pix_delay] using the [pix_yuv] object, possibly
reducing memory load by 50%.

also, these days i'll usually suggest using [pix_buffer] to build your
own delay-line.
it allows you fine-grained control over pre-allocation of the images, as
well as images of varying size and is generally more flexible.

ok thanks! I will have a look into that

I am doing *very* short introductions to PD to art students who are
very far from being technical. In that context I noticed that the less
connections the better. I basically provide them with ready to use

I don't blame anyone having trouble to creating box and connecting them,
but I think pd is not the right tools for someone in this situation.

there are lot's of tools and programming language available...

nothing I have checked so far does fulfil the requirements here. thats
why I introduce to PD, but I not teach PD. I just point them into the
tool and allow them to know the basic functions. If anyone wants to
learn it I point into vanilla and the tutorials. I would love to be able
to properly teach them, but it is impossible given the student's
background, the context and the time limits

if you have some suggestion about some tool to replace PD please let me

I could have created a simple abstraction encapsulating the structure

not sure about how to do it. I also thought it might be already

I also don't see why you needed a .exe, the user can just click on the

yeah, technophobic art students get scared of anything.

I will try to go for the script but starting an app from a shell script

i see, but I would try to avoid creating my own build. In windows I
solved this by creating a bat script that opens bin/pd.exe with the
right flags to point to the extras and load them. Then I used a bat to

exe at the root of pd and problem solved.

Are you trying to install pd vanilla or extended? As stated on that
page, the repos were for pd-extended. Vanilla should be in standard
Ubuntu repos already, though I believe 0.46.7 may be the most current
release available there. Since pd-extended is somewhat deprecated now it
is stuck somewhere around 0.43, so you will definitely not get updates
searching for that.

OMG! sorry, I made a mess... I had forgotten about the fact that before
summer I did try to install extended but then I finally installed
vanilla. I never removed the repos from the apt system. Now in my messy

pix_mix maybe? but that sounds kind of wrong to me...

Multiple [gemhead]s without distinct priority will be implementation
(un)defined behaviour, similar to connection fan-out vs [trigger] issues.

Set the priority of the [gemhead] connected to [pix_record] to be later
than all the others. See gemhead-help.pd for details, probably [gemhead
-100] will do the trick but depends on the patch.

Hopefully this helps,

mmm yes. it is becoming a problem for us. many thanks for the tips

Yup :P

The “everything just works” aspect of Pd-extended is a double-edged sword..

Easiest solution, I’ve found, is to start Pd with the -noprefs flag and
then check the list of objects that can’t create. After than I do a
system search for those object help files aka “locate borax-help.pd” and
see which external Pd-extended extra folder they are found in. From
that, you can build your definitive external list.

yes I know it sounds weird but here I have to be in sync with some

Hi enrike,
I don't see any reason to run an obsolete pd v 0.43.4-1 under Ubuntu
16.04 because there are fine pd v 0.46.7 extensions in the repos. I
think, with a little path configuration and perhaps adding some missing
libs you will get most of your old patches running.
From 15.10 to 16.04 the libgsl-stuff has been upgraded and is no longer
downward compatible.
But if you absolutely urge a running pd v 0.43 you will have to
recompile: manually edit the build depency from "libgsl0-dev" to
"libgsl-dev" and in the debian control files "libgsl0ldbl" to "libgsl2".
Without warranty, other important libs might have been upgraded too.
I myself prefer Ivica Ico Bukvic's pd-l2ork for it's clarity (I think
its based on 0.43) and I had to proceed in the manner described above to
get a installable .deb for Ubuntustudio 16.04. The pd-l2ork-team
inofficially announced to upgrade soon.
best regards
Gerhard

Hi

I am trying to install the pd-extended_0.43.4-1~raring_amd64.deb
package of pd-extended in Ubuntu 16.04 but I get this dependency error

It says it depends on libgsl0ldbl (>= 1.9), and that it is not
installed. I did $ aptitude search libgsl0

this returns me

v libgsl0-dbg
v libgsl0-dbg:i386
v libgsl0-dev
v libgsl0-dev:i386

then I try to sudo aptitude install libgsl0-dev but it just does not
install anything at all. I searched with synaptic but that package is
not listed there.

I am kind of lost here. any ideas?

[PD] EHU-abstractions new version

2016-04-01 Thread enrike

hi all

This year I have been involved again in some PD teaching so I updated a
library of abstractions I use for students. I thought it might be
interesting for someone out there.

Find it here in the PD section
http://www.ixi-audio.net/content/backyard.html and the github page is
http://github.com/enrike/ehu-abstractions

This is the description:
EHU is a set of abstractions for PureData real-time graphical
programming environment.

EHU aims to allow for rapid prototyping of interactive systems.
Most abstractions in EHU encapsulate the GUI widgets to control them
minimising the job of creation of widgets and connections.
EHU covers playing video files, controlling video cameras, displaying
pictures, playing samples, audio effects, DMX controls, and some general
utilities.

It is based on pd-extended :/ and relies on few abstractions there.

ooops... I just realised the 64bit version seems to work ok on this
machine (is a new one). On my desktop it has always been very
problematic and I thought it was because the 64 bit version of pd was
yet unstable, but it looks like there might be something in the hardware
of my desktop that causes the trouble. interesting.

y recent answer.

my expertise is Debian only, but should apply to ubuntu as well.

- make sure you have a recent enough system
- enable multi-arch:

   $ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

- (probably update your apt cache)

   $ sudo apt-get update

- install the i386 binary:

   $ sudo apt-get install puredata:i386

make sure to read the multiarch guide [1].
