well, that is still not a convincing reason why to me, sorry :) what I'm
trying to say is that there is no reason not to use the latest for the most
part when it comes to Pd

there were more than rumors, I already sent a bit of money for bounty
actually. This has been going on for a while but it hasn't had much
progress. There were talks about advertising about it on this list and on
the facebook group, but something is holding it back.

It seems that these couple of issues in GEM on macOS is what's worrying
most people that still use Pd Extended...

Although it is rather difficult to build pd-extended because of all its
dependencies, it should be possible to make a 64-bit version. There is no
explicit use of the -m32 flags in any of its makefiles.

Gem has been available (and functional) on 64bit systems for about 15
years now.

however, on OSX, Gem uses QuickTime to get images (to read films or your
video camera), and Apple decided that QuickTime is *not* available for
64bit.
Dan has done a great job to reimplement film reading (using
AVFoundation), which mainly leaves video input and image reading to be
implemented to make Gem fully usable on macOS 64bit.

there were rumours about offering a bounty to get these fixed.

hopefully, this was cryptic enough.

So, no, that doesn't automatically mean double-precision Pd.

yeah, these two links seem to have conflicting or confusing information.
The first one you sent says warnings start now in the next update of high
sierra, but only shown "once", ten it says "The next version of macOS after
High Sierra will include "aggressive" warnings about 32-bit apps before
they are phased out entirely." I suppose that means it'll always bug you
about it and not just once when 10.14 comes out later this year... then
10.15 will stop it.

But this other link says now 10.14 will only be 64 bits, hence the next
update this year will prevent Pd extended from working.

[PD] macOS 64 bit only soon

2018-01-26 Thread Dan Wilcox
To coincide with the work people are doing on 64 bit Windows builds of Pd, it
looks as though Apple is stepping up it's move toward 64 bit only in the next
version of macOS:
https://www.macrumors.com/2018/01/24/macos-high-sierra-32-bit-app-warning/

We've had 64 bit macOS Pd builds for a long time now, but now we need 64 bit
external builds on deken to go with it. This will also likely mean that
Pd-extended will no longer run on macOS 10.14 next year.
