FS: SMCK 1000mm f/8 + Asahi wooden tripod (not mine)
To anyone who's interested, this lens is in very good condition (I've played with it myself). The shop is very reputable, takes credit cards and ships internationally. The lens is manual aperture and uses rack pinion focus (min focus distance is about 30 metres). It uses an internal filter (I don't remember the thread size), and the original filter is fully intact. In similar fashion to some other big glass I've seen, you can rotate the camera body without having to turn the whole lens, as the bayonet itself is able to rotate. A couple of pictures, full contact details and more are at: http://www.photo.co.nz/photo/ Now take advantage of the low NZ dollar (this lens works out to about US$1900 plus shipping, including the tripod), and don't forget to mention my name when you buy it ;) Cheers, - Dave David A. John Coyle writes: I mount those that are worth projecting, then save the rest in archive pages uncut. That way, if I have duplicate frames (which I used to do a lot for peace of mind, but don't nowadays so much) I can scan the uncut one more easily than having to wreck the mount. Although, the new scanner allows me to scan mounted slides too! Up until my most recent roll I was getting my slides mounted boxed. Very convenient to store and only cost a couple of dollars more than unmounted. The down-side was that the lab doesn't always mount the slides properly, and being cheap mounts you can't reseal them. Plus, they use an old dot matrix printer to put the frame numbers and other info on the mount, and sometimes I get little bits of black stuff on my slides, presumably bits of ink ribbon. I got sick enough of it to switch to getting my film returned cut sleeved, and I'm mounting them myself using Gepe mounts which I can take apart and reset as much as I like. The other reason I switched to this is that since I bought my scanner I've decided that I trust the scanner's filmstrip holder better than slide mounts, as far as film flatness is concerned. Also, because the slide scanner can only handle single frames of 6x7 (instead of 120 strips), I've gone to Gepe mounts for those as well. I figured that since I have to cut my film strips into separate frames I'm going to need some way of storing them and the slide mounts are really the only way I can keep any information with the slide, as well as being easy to handle and relatively robust. MZ-S-Finder?
Hy, as a fellow MZ-5n-owner wearing glasses I often look enviously at Nikon's F3 with the HP-finder (high-eyepoint). Last week I've tried a used Pentax LX in a camera shop but was disappointed, as I could't get an overall view with its finder and my glasses. Now I wonder, if Pentax has thougt of persons with glasses, when they constructed the MZ-S. Has anybody tried the MZ-S and can tell me something about the quality of the finder? Is it comparable to that of the F3 HP or more like that of my MZ-5n? Bye, Heiko Germany - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: New Lens ???
I would not be waiting for a Pentax 17-35 FA. I suspect that Pentax would rather make an 18/2.8 to fill that hole. A FA 18/2.8 Limited + a FA 20-35/4 will possibly be cheaper and smaller than a 17-35/2.8. Pentax is indeed working on image stabilization. When or whether it reach the market is up to the marketing guys. Silent wave or USM rumors exist but their credibility is totally unknown (to me). Pentax said at the Photokina show in 1996 that they were considering an 80-200/2.8 without power zoom. So far it hasn't materialized. You write to Pentax engineers by posting at PDML; or at least the marketing people who decide whats going to be released. Hi, Paul, Since you specifically ask for comments on your beautiful image, here goes: The colour of the opening rose bud us absolutely stunning, especially juxtaposed against all of the green shades around it. I love the detail of the bud. The drops of dew are lovely; I especially like the dewdrop just about to drip from the leave below the bud. You can believe that if you wish, but I believe the term third world was invented by Mao to refer to the non-aligned nations. (He included China in this block for his purposes). This would have to be clearly non-European propaganda since his usage was intended to create a new power center with China as it's natural leader. Old World, New World these terms were useful to the American and French revolutionaries, (yes I know Europeans), and the earlier European monarchies for their describing geo-political reality. Most of the current, (now passe, actually with the discrediting of Communism in it's modern homeland), terminology is born of the propaganda wars between The West, (not really capitalism) and the religion of communism, (and it is really easy to understand the pattern if you consider it a religion), with it's great schism between orthodox, (Soviet), and reform, (Chinese). RE: User report on Lowepro AW packback
I had one of them for about a week, and the strap buckle (made of plastic) let go one time when I was picking it up at an angle. All of my photo gear went smashing to the ground. And no, it was not overloaded. Repeated angry calls, letters and emails to LowePro resulted in them sending out a brand new top of the line LowePro Pro-Trekker AW to replace it. However, this was after $500.00 in claims to my camera insurance for repairs. That particular bag (your Phototrekker) is the only one in the line that has those silly little plastic clips which bear ALL of the weight of the gear: my advice would be to replace them with something metal (at a shoe repair place, under $10.00) or watch that thing like a hawk, particularly as you purchase more equipment and it gets heavier. I still had room for another camera and a Large lens, and mine let go, crashing down 6' onto cement. I have had three other LowePro bags that have been fabulous, as is my current one. That one was not good. Perhaps LowePro has returned to the use of metal clips, which always used to be used on their equipment. Cameron Hood - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. July PUG comments
Hi all, Once again, another fine monthly gallery. I enjoyed them all too much to pick out five -- or even ten -- favorites. Comments on several of the ones I liked are listed below. As always, I'd appreciate any comments or criticisms on my submission this month, especially since this month's submission is my first attempt at scanning directly from a negative (35mm at 1200 dpi) on my newly acquired flatbed scanner. Bill Peifer Rochester, NY == Pine Nuts, by Thomas Cakalic Nice shot, Tom. This caught my eye immediately, because it's very similar (in subject matter) to some macro shots I took a couple weeks ago during a very light rain. I still have a couple more shots on the roll, so I'll have to wait to see if mine turn out as nice as this one. Very nice colors, and nice bokeh. Reminds me of Christmas. Lobelia, by David Dixon This seems like a technically challenging shot, since any slight movement between exposures would cause the most sharply focused flower to show up in the final print as up to four out-of-register images. That doesn't seem to be the case here, so I think you've pulled this off quite nicely. Very interesting effect -- I like it. Lynn Headwaters, October 1999, by Cameron Hood Beautiful saturated colors, nice composition, and nice rendering of flowing water. This shot certainly stands on its own. But the dramatic story that accompanies this shot really leaves me wanting to see some during and after shots of the storm that caught you by surprise. Indeed, a very powerful reminder of the importance of being prepared during autumn hikes in the mountains. VLA at Sunset, by John Cohen The silhoutte lighting and ominous sky work very well in this shot. I'm used to seeing pictures of several of these radio dishes, usually shot from a great distance in much more ordinary light. Your shot captures -- at least for me -- more of a sense of drama and urgency. Would make a nice opening slide for a public outreach talk on why radio astronomy is so cool, what we learn from studying celestial radio sources, and so forth. Photography in Paradise, by Joseph Tainter Aptly titled! Great lighting on this shot. For me, this shot doesn't jump out and evoke a typical image of the Southwest -- it's different, and I think that's part of the appeal. Looks like it could just as well be the crumbling ruins of some Old World archeological site. Inquisitive, by Bill Sawyer Another great title! There were several nice wildlife shots this month, and it's hard to pick a favorite. A couple of the things I like about this shot are the simple composition and the great facial expression. I think the detail of the front paws resting near what appears to be some sort of ground up grain or nuts adds a lot of appeal to this shot. Group Hug, by Amber Dayton Not your typical wildlife pose -- I love it! The contrast of the black and white stripes is nice. I'd be tempted to crop this shot to make it zebra hindquarters from top to bottom and left to right, just to see what that would look like, butt that's just my personal opinion. The Wreck, by Leon Altoff It looks like your metering was dead-on for this shot. The rusted metal parts are rendered nicely within the dynamic range. The way the highlights of water and sky are so completely blown out gives this shot an almost surreal feeling, I think. Nice job! Driving to the Line, by Jon Hope Great action shot. You commented that you wanted a faster shutter speed, but I think the one you employed really conveys a sense of motion and captures the energy of these beasts. Sparky's First Day at the Farm, by David Brooks This is great timing on what must have been a very brief moment. The comments you provided really help tell the story. I'll bet Sparky has been much more careful ever since. I like the exposed teeth on the horse. I think the darkened area in the top 30% of the image could be cropped without losing any of the impact of this shot. I'm wondering if you played with this at all. Sam Is Not Happy, by Mark McCurdy Precious shot, and very well-composed. I'm sure you and your wife will treasure this one for many years to come. Sam looks like he's doing quite well for his first time in a chair. If you think he's not happy here, just wait until he starts teething! :-) DH/Charlottesville/May 2001, by John Mason I think this might be a bass player at an outdoor civic festival of some sort. Not sure if the background is the facade of a building, or the perhaps the arch of a bridge. The tonal range is nice -- black shirt and hat, dark musical instrument, light gray jacket, white tie. Perhaps you can give us some comments about the situation surrounding this photo? Metro, Paris, 2001, by Juan Buhler I think there is a powerful message here, but the shot would benefit from some commentary by the photographer. The static pose of the man in the foreground contrasts well with the movement of
Film scanner rental
Anyone know where I might rent a film scanner (in the US)? I need something that can scan slides for a project I've got in mind but I don't want to spend a ton of money buying something I may not use much after the project is over. If it matters, I'm in the Atlanta area. Most of the slides were taken with Pentax gear (list content) Is this a stupid idea? Thanks, Cory Waters - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I'm thinking that it is the pitch, which is higher than the PZ-1p, that seems loud when in fact, it is really quite reasonable. Perhaps that is it! Perhaps Pål has a hearing loss of high pitch sounds. I have that a bit as well, so this is a good camera for me. Except the General Director thinks I have enough camera's. Re: Buying FA 2/24 cheaply - Europe (or other lenses)
Oops! That's horrible about the DG meaning Sigma lenses are optimised for center. Can it really be? I mean 1.5x or such sensors are gonna be history in 2- 3 years, but lens design can last more than 10 years ?! Would they make enough profits this way? But I heard this from another person, too. That makes the Sigmas not wanted for me :( And they were so cheap... But always, I will test this myself in the shop with roll of film. Frantisek - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Circular fish-eye lens for pentax-k -- Peleng or Sigma EX?
Hi, Thanks for your insight. May be, the reflections originate from the inner part of the lens housing ? (if the painture of inner side is not all matte). I agree, that these lenses are difficult to use; therefore,I decided in favour of the SMC-F fish-eye zoom (zooming may allow adjustments of the degree of line distorsion - this probably make the usage of the lens less difficult). However, I am still intrigued by the idea of a circular image with an angle of 180 degree view in all directions. Alexander René van Ginkel wrote: I have a Peleng, the lens is sharp but suffers a lot from internal reflections which are giving light rings on the outside of the picture circle. Its not flare but something different. The picture circle is a bit larger then the short side of a negative or slide (about 25 mm). The lens is cheap in it's kind, well build, painted instead of anodized and mine came with a Nikon adapter. When using it with a Nikon adapter you can't use it on a F-camera like the F, F2, F3 etc because there to little space for the cameramirror behind the lens (reason: backmounted filters which you have to use and are included) a Nikon FE didn't have the problem. I didnt't have problems using it on a MZ5n or a KX/MX but maybe the LX will be problematic. These kind of lenses are extremely difficult to use and a IMO a bit of a gimmick Don't know about the Sigma, its a lot more expensive. July PUG comments
Thanks to several folks for comments about my VLA at Sunset picture. FYI, it was taken on the first roll I ever did with my ZX-5n, on outdated Tri-X, which I dropped off at the local supermarket for genuine Kodak processing, but all the pictures came back with different degrees of colour, so I have to assume it went through some kind of dye baths, but as I write this it makes less and less sense... I haven't studied all the shots for July but I was bowled over by Sparky's first day at the farm by David Brooks. You have to look at this one carefully to see what's going on! At first I though, nice running horse, then I saw the dog, and WOW! Unbelievable timing. Both facial expressions, and the diagonal of the horse, and the dog's forward diagonal, make it a picture I don't have words for. I love it. Re: Film scanner rental
Cory, A decent slide scanner cost $400+ and 15 minutes per slide for you to scan. A Kodak CD costs $5 + $1.35 per slide and the travel time for two trips to the photo store. For anything less than several hunderd slides, the CD makes the most sense to me. On a side note, the local outlet here offered a deal on scanning and 8x12 prints from slides - 8 slides for $49 US. The scans came back as 250K jpegs with 1000x1500 pixel sizes. This is much smaller than the 2400x3600 pixel scans you get on a CD. The results were quite nice printed on their 'new' Norataki (spelling) machine. They were certainly much better than the type R prints of old and something I'll consider doing again. Regards, Bob S.
