I have a Program A that the mirror stays up on, even if you push the mirror
down my hand it just flips back to the up position. Any ideas on what this
could be?

The magnet? The batteries? I don't know, but pull it down by force sounds
bad to me. :(

RE: Vancouver Island Nature Photography?

2002-07-18 Thread Michael Perham

The drive from Nanimo to Tofino in itself offers some fantastic photo
opportunities. Once on the west coast of the island, there are some great
places to visit beside Tofino, Equlet (I've misspelled that) and Long Beach.
The drive along the west coast offers some grand views. Also if you are
interested you can go on a whale watch, this is the right time of the year.

Enjoy... Mike.

Hi Canadian Listmembers,
I'm going to spend a few days in Vancouver Island,
and I'm planning to drive on the backroads and camp
and visit Tofino. Just wondering if any of you know
some good places for nature photography on
the island? I'm a bit familiar with Victoria,
but that's all I've seen of the island so far.
Thanks for any ideas.

No real force was needed to pull the mirror down, there was no resistance.
The Batteries seem okay as the shutter speed display works okay.

Re: Auroras

2002-07-18 Thread Michel Adam

Well, if I was down south, where it is dark, I would recommend this:

Fast, Wide, Elite Chrome 200, maybe pushed to 400.

i.e., 28mm f/2, or 24mm f/2, or 24mm f/1.4

Vary the exposure from 10 to 60 seconds, in steps of 10 seconds

And REMOVE ANY FILTERS!

Obviously tripod and cable release...

You might try a fisheye wide open (f/2.8 ?) also.

Untill darkness comes back up here, I can only envy you ...

Couple of average ME Supers

Some independent auto tube sets

Anyone into Bolex 16mm?

P30 and P30t macro photography

2002-07-18 Thread Don Williams Finland

Hi all,

I've been here, but off the list for a while. Now I'm outside crawling about
taking pictures of flowers, many being only 2-3mm diameter, as usual.

Macro Photography with P30 and P30t:

Equipment: Pentax P30 and P30t, Sigma Macro 50mm, several Pentax lenses with
Soligor macro converter, small shoe-mounted flash gun (name lost), aluminium
reflectors, Fuji and Ferrania negative colour. Processing Tetenal Colortex
C-41; s/s tanks in thermostat controlled water-bath.

I've devised a new, double, flash reflector. One part goes on top of the flash
gun with Velcro and the second part is fastened to the tripod socket - with an
adapter so the tripod can still be used.

As before the reflectors are made of 0.5mm sheet aluminium polished to remove
blemishes and then matted with 'Putkimies' (Pipe-man or plumber) drain
cleaner. This drain cleaner contains 10% NaOH and does a creditable job. It
takes a little longer than a more concentrated solution, but its right here
under the kitchen sink. This time the top reflector is more or less 'T'
shaped, extends 130mm from the front of the flash and is directly above the
object when the lens is fully extended. The front is bent down and the two
'wings' are curved left and right. The shape is parabolic and I did a lot of
calculating to get the angles right. The light is now reflected downwards at
about 50 degrees and concentrates (I won't say focuses) on the object. The
lower reflector (flat) bounces back some of the light so that the shadows are
not as pronounced as they were with only a top reflector. Naturally when I
designed this thing I considered only a single ray. The flash, to start with,
scatters the light widely. The attached top reflector does more and the light
by the time it reaches the object is very diffuse. The light coming up from
the lower reflector is much weaker. Using a Seconic flash meter I get a nice
f22 at 1:1 with 200 asa film at the subject position.

A picture taken with ambient light under these conditions would require four
or more times the exposure on a sunny day, even more under cloud. The flash,
set on automatic, serves to freeze movement nicely because the ambient
contribution to exposure is small. The busiest bees and flies, not to mention
wind-blown blooms, come out nice and sharp.

I'll be putting a picture of this contraption on my website in a week or so
and anyone wanting to see it let me know and I'll give you the address of the
directory.

OT: New Toy! Woo Hoo!!

2002-07-18 Thread Cotty

So today, I bought Dave Chang-Sang's Leica CL with Summicron C 2.0
40mm. A very nice looking little unit, I must say! I hope everything
I've heard about this lens is true (you out there, Cotty? g).
Certainly, the prints Dave showed me were impressively sharp.

Should be a nice little camera for street photography. But, Cotty,
after your big build-up earlier this week, if I'm not happy with it, I'm
going to fly over there to kick your butt. vbg

I know it's ain't a Pentax (hence, the OT), but I just had to share with
you guys. I'm a Leica owner! :-)

Congrats Frank - it truly is a great little camera. I'd go so far as to
say that if you don't enjoy it as much as I think you will, I'll even
meet you at the airport, and present you with a bare bottom, target rings
and bulls-eye painted on, ready to go. Make sure you've got some extra
grotty hobnail boots :-)

seriously, it grow on you more and more. Also - it's *not* an M series
camera. I know that sounds daft, but wondering about with it, you don't
feel that it has a stigma attached to it as the (say) M6 does. People
gawp less, it attracts less attention, and so lends itself beautifully to
street. You will have loads of fun. If only Leica had joined forces with
Pentax on that one instead of Minolta.

The focus takes a moment to get used to, but from then on, it's great. No
shutter lock, but when I wind on, I'm serious ;-)

Good luck with it and have fun. You will.

Re: Re: Pentax Posters in Montreal

2002-07-18 Thread andre

Hi Dave. If you're in Toronto you could probably do as I will do,
distribute a few around, and better if they are in tubes, but I'm not
sure it's good business to send them by mail as they might come out
more expensive as if they were sent directly from Italy because of
Canada Post's huge fees for packet more than 50cm long (posters are
70cm). Don't forget that to receive a batch, you have to send a M.O.
and pay 15% taxes on the posters + $5 brokerage fee, all this over
the initial cost and then mail them...

I think the best way to deal with the posters is to see how much
people around you (that you can meet or that can meet you within the
next months) will want the poster, and buy that number of posters and
a few more. Initial price per poster is 4 US $ each if you buy 5,
$3.60 if you buy 10 and $3 if you buy 15.

OT: Carry everywhere toy

2002-07-18 Thread Bill Owens

I just received a new toy which may become my carry everywhere camera. It's
a Yashica Samurai half frame AF ZLR. Seems to be very well built and nice
features for a $30.00 camera. Lens is 25-75 (50-150) zoom that is fairly
fast for a PS at 3.5-4.3. Built in automatic flash, night shot and night
shot with flash, single shot or consecutive shooting at a very fast fps rate
(haven't used it yet, or timed it).

How soon will your trip be? It could take a few weeks before I get
the posters. I will send the money tomorrow. One week to get there
at least. Then another 3 weeks I guess...

But, I do go to Ottawa, about twice a year. Maybe I should ask 15
posters instead of 10 and give you a few when we meet.

Any other PDMLers from O T T A W A would like to in the wagon ?

Well... if you are a more than a few, maybe someone there could ask
for 5, 10 or 15. (It's not a good deal to buy more than 15 at a time
because of postal fee's structure in Italy.)

I have one too. I stopped using it because I got sick of people thinking it was a
mini camcorder and trying to perform in front of it.

But it does pack a mess of features in. I thought the best thing about it was the way
you can operate everything with only one hand on it. If yours doesn't have it, look
on eBay for the action grip which makes this even easier when biking or whatever else.

Function with the keys Menu, Ok, and several other.
- Visa Electronic, model Global-Plus

Function with the key Menu only
Nota:
- working a few uncertain (directivité, sensitivity?), are two
successive supports necessary; does the device make the measure of

temporization as with the release), doesn't it make autofocus.

Pentax K1000 Project

2002-07-18 Thread MANGUM,MARK (HP-USA,ex1)

This is not for the faint of heart.

I relatively new to the list, but I do love
my Pentax's so please bear with me.

I have finished a project of rebuilding a
couple of K1000's and had two bodies left over.
This led me to thinking (Yes, I know I shouldn't
do that), what would a BLACK K1000 look like.

I purchased a special leather kit from
cameraleather.com and stripped a body down to
see what a paint job would need.

I tested a couple of different paints and cleaners
and settled on a gloss black. The flat and satin
paints just didn't look right.

To see the final camera go to the cameraleather web site at

http://www.cameraleather.com/pentax

and go to the bottom of the page. The K1000 with the green
background is the finished product.

Let me know what you think. I a dedicated Pentax user
so I have thick skin. It did turn out better than I had
expected and even I like it.

If

I've got two K2DMD's and motor drives, and no manual. It's not a big

 if this had happened.

No. It comes like this from the factory.

The permanently attached hood took two of us to
unscreww and then extend and lock. As it appears to be alloy,
this could be a significant problem with expansion/contraction
 due to temperature variation.

I haven't noticed any temperature related problems although the hood is fiddly. Mine
tends to jam and I eventually broke the fastenings screws for the front section of the
lens so that the whole section moved when I tried to screw/unscrew the hood. I
eventually got it fixed. Don't use force on the hood!

Fiddling a bit more, I discovered a focus limiter. This would
be quite useful as, if one misses one's subject whislt aimed at
the sky, the focus racks through its full gamut. Unfortunately,
this seemd to be only able to work with manual focus.

No. It works with AF as well.

I think I'm gonna like this camera, so I won't have to buy hob-nails boots

It's a little gem! Haven't put any film in it yet (but will on the

used to. That's a tiny little lens barrel. Can't wait to take it on the

Nope, I'll have to save my visit to the Mother Country for a ukpdml airshow

seriously, it grow on you more and more.

You will.

Sure, Dave, put all the pressure on me! Well, I'm going to be selfish,

So I say, Beaches Jazz Fest. Sunday is my best day, 'cause I'd have to
leave whatever we'd be doing on Saturday at about 3 or 3:30. I know the
Beaches, but not any of the names of the bars (I've been to the bars,
just don't know their names g). So how about Kew Gardens, right on
Queen Street (that's less than a half block) at around 2:00 on Sunday?

Of course, any other suggestions are fine with me, but I throw that out
for consideration (as Rod Serling would say...).

Hi, Amita,

Oo!

Letchworth State Park! I've been camping there many times, and it's
gorgeous! The Grand Canyon of the North, it's sometimes called. Of
course, it's not ~nearly~ as big, but it is quite lovely. Bring your
hiking boots, 'cause there are lots of terrific trails going up and down
the gorge. And, if memory serves correctly (haven't been there for about
10 years), there are three waterfalls along the gorge for some wonderful
photo ops (as if the gorge itself isn't enough).

And if you have the time or inclination, at one end of the Gorge, is the
town of Geneseo, which is very pretty. Check it out if you have the
chance.

I didn't have a camera the times I went there, so I'm looking forward to
seeing your pics posted.

Sounds like you'll have a great weekend, with the balloon festival thrown
in there too! Have fun.

regards,
frank

My parents have one of those but have quit using it ( a while ago) because

I just received a new toy which may become my carry everywhere camera.
It's
a Yashica Samurai half frame AF ZLR. Seems to be very well built and nice
features for a $30.00 camera. Lens is 25-75 (50-150) zoom that is fairly
fast for a PS at 3.5-4.3. Built in automatic flash, night shot and night
shot with flash, single shot or consecutive shooting at a very fast fps
rate
(haven't used it yet, or timed it).

You will.

Re: OT: TOPDML / TOPUG Meeting Potential ?

2002-07-18 Thread frank theriault

Hi, Jeff,

Yeah. 2 pm Saturday, at Kew Gardens. What's the cross-street? I think it
begins with a K. Kennilworth, maybe? Anyway, once you get to the Beaches area
of Queen East (basically it starts at Woodbine, I think), you go east a few
blocks, and Kew Gardens is on the south side of Queen. I don't know what the
best landmark in the park is, so I'm suggesting just meeting on Queen, right in
front of the Park. The Park basically fronts on Queen for about 1/2 block.
Should be pretty easy to find each other.

Or maybe one of the others knows of a bar or better place along the Queen East
Beaches area at which we could meet, but that's my suggestion until a better one
is made.

Of course, at this point, there's just you and I confirmed for Sat aft, so
let's see what others say.

regards,
frank

Re: OT:JPEG patent

2002-07-18 Thread Galen S Swint

Actually, just to get people straight, PNG is not a good replacement for
JPEG. JPEG techniques were specifically engineered for photographs. PNG
was specifically targeted to replace GIF. I know of no good replace for
JPEG right now - all the camera makers may just have to suck it up until
either a) memory gets real cheap and store images in a raw format, or
b) the patent expires.
Love this list (been watching a week now)
Adios!

300mm f2.8 (FA vs A)

2002-07-18 Thread Jerome Daryl Coombs-Reyes

I have questions... but first here are examples of listings for these
lenses (as taken from BH website).

Telephoto SMCP-A* 300mm f/2.8 ED IF Manual Focus Lens
Price: $5,152.50

Telephoto SMCP-FA* 300mm f/2.8 ED IF Autofocus Lens
Price: $4,299.95

My question is, why is there a price difference between these two lenses?
More specifically, why is the FA* version less expensive than the A*?
Personally, I would have expected the reverse.

I've also taken note that the A* version of this lens has always been the
rave on PDML and also on Stan Halpin's site. Should this also be
interpreted as a 'black eye' against the FA version, or just a shared
preference for manual focus big glass amongst PDMLers?

Since AF is typically not free, I'm guessing that there must be some
_significant_ optical quality differences (about $1000 worth) between the
two lenses [which would actually surprise me quite a bit]. Can anyone
confirm or deny this presumption?

For those with experience with these lenses (preferably first hand, but
second or third hands will do, too).. please enlighten me! Thanks in
advance,
jerome

Hi, Jeff,

Yeah. 2 pm Saturday, at Kew Gardens. What's the cross-street? I think it
begins with a K. Kennilworth, maybe? Anyway, once you get to the Beaches
area
of Queen East (basically it starts at Woodbine, I think), you go east a few
blocks, and Kew Gardens is on the south side of Queen. I don't know what
the
best landmark in the park is, so I'm suggesting just meeting on Queen, right
in
front of the Park. The Park basically fronts on Queen for about 1/2 block.
Should be pretty easy to find each other.

Or maybe one of the others knows of a bar or better place along the Queen
East
Beaches area at which we could meet, but that's my suggestion until a better
one
is made.

Of course, at this point, there's just you and I confirmed for Sat aft, so
let's see what others say.

regards,
frank
