Just Back from Miami--Little Havana
Hi Everyone: I just got back from Miami about 4 hours ago. The trip was work related, but I did sneak off to Little Havana on Friday night. It was fun to do some night shooting. Re: Nasty Storm East Coast
Well unfortunately there are people along the coast of Long Island that considered IRENE a fizzle and are non-chalanting Sandy. One news reporter, I think in Far Rockaway, said that 80% of the population there are not going to evacuate even though they are in a manditory evacuation zone. Oy. ann On 10/29/2012 10:08, Darren Addy wrote: Sandy is definitely interesting to watch from afar (and glad I'm far away). I would say that the biggest problem for most will be the power outages (some estimates put it at 10 million without power). With trees that still have leaves, heavy rain (or snow, as in WV) combined with high winds mean lots of snapped branches and if those branches are over or near power lines you've got an outage. Other than that, the coastal region NORTH of Sandy's center (I won't say eye because she will probably be post-tropical by the time she reaches land) will be hardest hit by the storm surge (especially if/when combined with full moon high tides). West Virginia mountains are probably looking at a historic amount of thundersnow, but that is probably better than dumping all of that water directly into overtaxed streams and rivers. The question is: how far into the lowlands will also see snow and where the temperature line will set up for the snow to rain transition in northern WV? A number of storm chasers will be chasing Sandy, which I think is stupid on multiple levels. For one, visibility will be non-existent so whatchagonnasee? This storm could take a good number of human lives and, unfortunately, those out in in or on the roads are the ones that are putting themselves most at risk. Leave your stalled car in the West Virginia blizzard and you stand a good chance of dying. Pile-ups resulting from poor visibility and downed trees and powerlines will probably also happen. Particularly in populated areas being out on foot will also be dangerous as anything that isn't nailed down is going to be several counties away before the wind stops blowing. Getting hit by anything that is windblown at 60+ mph is not going to be fun. Hope all in Sandy's path will just hunker down with plenty of flashlight batteries and candles and some good books and enjoy the fact that nobody expects them to be anywhere for a while. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: The Digital Negative — Book Review
Thanks for the review. I dislike the use of the term Digital Negative in the sense used for this book title. The term digital negative is used today to refer to the process of using an inkjet printer and transparency material to make a large format negative for contact printing (usually with a historic or alternative process) to create a print in a traditional darkroom (from what was originally a digital image). -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

OT - can you recommend a good digital rangefinder?
Hi All: A very good friend of mine asked for an [urgent] advice on photo cameras. A portion of that includes a recommendation for non-SLR (aka mirrorless) digital cameras with changeable lenses for an enthusiast at early stages. The camera is to be small (mobile, take-anywhere), easy to use in both automatic and semi-automatic/manual modes, able to handle reasonably low light, and not to have long shutter lag. Most frequent use: shooting while travelling (landscapes, urban views), shooting people/friends non-very-intrusively. It would be a step-up alternative to something like Lumix LX-7 or Samsung ex2f that allows interchangeable lenses (for growing needs). The question is not about fancy Leica cameras or X100, or rather, it is about mid-level cameras (with a budget of within $1K or less for the body and one-two lenses). I haven't been following this segment of the market as closely. I think that some of the Panasonic/Olympus/..? micro-4/3 cameras fall into this category, Nikon 1, etc. I am not sure if K-01 or Q10 would be reasonable here, - they seem to me too much of a specialty, and not as mainstream cameras... I'd appreciate if you can mention a few models that you'd recommend. If you can point out the strong points of the model, - that would also be great. Re: OT - can you recommend a good digital rangefinder?
I've had a few of the Olympus PEN series and currently have an E-PM1. The E-PM1 can now be had for under $400 with a lens, cheaper ont he used market It's a pretty good 12 MP sensor good up until 800 normally or 1600 with some heavy (and non-adjustable) NR. This would leave 6-700 for lenses. I'd suggest the Lumix 14 2.5 ($250) and the Olympus 45 1.8 ($400), both of which are sharp and pretty fast. The E-Pl1, an older body with a similar sensor but slower AF, is also out then for $189, body only. IQ is not as good as the Pentax DSLRs, but perfectly fine as long as you're not printing really big (16 x20) prints. Re: Just Back from Miami--Little Havana
Thanks Tim, Larry, Derby, Bob, Ann, Paul, and George. These shots are from Friday night, which was Cultural Friday in Little Havana--the last Friday of every month. The energy and crowd was very up beat, friendly, and a bit more mixed. The art in the galleries was fantastic; I bought a small piece, and the artist signed it for me. It was great to do some night shooting, and given the energy that night, I had a double bonus going. I went back on Saturday night, and it felt different to me--edgier. I met a nice artist, but over all, it didn't feel as open as the night before. There is virtually no English spoken in Little Havana, so it was like doing international travel, which was lots of fun. I actually enjoyed that. Food was great! Great pork chops, grilled onions, rice and black beans. Loved it! And Pistachio ice cream at Azzors. Loved that! Re: The Digital Negative . Book Review
Darren, That term has been in use for many years now, - I think since at least the first raw format images were produced by the digital cameras. The word negative lost its original negative (i.e. the one that has polarity opposite to the print) meaning, and means any source (including a file) from which you can do printing. It also has a connotation of the original file that cannot be changed (e.g. for forensic/legal purposes) and can be accepted as a legal proof (hence the DNG format - digital negative). Some words lost their original meaning and a new live in the digital world... BTW, file - is one of those words. Cheers, Igor Mon Oct 29 11:13:03 EDT 2012 Darren Addy wrote: Thanks for the review. Roe vs. Wa.. errr. RAW vs DNG
Sorry for starting a new thread. I just wanted to share the fact that I came across. It is referenced e.g. in this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Negative Quote: Digital image preservation (sometimes known as archiving): to be suitable for the purpose of preserving digital images as an authentic resource for future generations.[19] Assessment: The US Library of Congress states that DNG is a recommended alternative to other raw image formats: Less desirable file formats: RAW; Suggested alternatives: DNG.[20] The Digital Photography Best Practices and Workflow (dpBestflow) project, funded by the United States Library of Congress and run by the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), singles out DNG, and states DNG files have proven to be significantly more useful than the proprietary raw files in our workflow.[21] See that article for the links/references. This is pretty much what several PDMLers said in another long thread for more specific PEF vs DNG comparison. Richard's not been well the past couple of years and knew his time was coming. He wrote me this past July to say farewell as he didn't know whether he would make the year out or be able to communicate much further. He's been in hospice for several weeks now. This morning I received this note from a mutual friend of ours from London: Sad to report that Richard died at 1.30 am today, local time. The final decline was very rapid but he was not in pain for long. I think he knew when I last saw him that he’d never make it home, but the hospice he was in was brilliant and they gave him fantastic care. Pat would like any donations to go to the Sue Ryder organisation who run this and other hospices. http://www.sueryder.org/What-we-do/Care-centres/Leckhampton-Court-Hospice Richard is survived by his wife, Pat, and by his sons and their families. All fine people whom I have been honored to spend time with. He was a great enthusiast for Pentax cameras and loved the pursuit of Photography in all its forms. Godspeed, Richard, you will be missed. Godfrey I'm sorry to hear that. Re: OT: Keep us posted
News says there are 172,000 homes without power in the Boston area. We're (obviously) not one of them. All the power lines in our neighborhood are underground. Of course, if they're fed from lines that are above ground and *those* get taken out we're still stuck... It seems there are huge variations in storm intensity within relatively short distances. It hasn't seemed too ferocious here so far but a friend less than 4 miles away reported it as being very frightening just a short while ago. Just listening to Diana Krall singing a slightly suggestive song she recorded in 1999, written by Michael Franks, called Popsicle Toes. She had shortened and reversed the male female references. The original lyrics: And when God gave out rhythm He sure was good to you. You can add, subtract, multiply and divide... By two. I know today's your birthday, And I did not buy no rose. But I wrote this song instead and I call it, Popsicle Toes. Popsicle toes. Popsicle toes are always froze. Popsicle toes. You're so brave to expose all those popsicle toes. You must have been Miss Pennsylvania With all this pulchritude. How come you always load your Pentax When I'm in the nude? just heard from Ann!
Hi Everyone: I just had a fun, chatty conversation with Ann in New York. Her power is off, BUT ComEd--the electrical company--turned it off on purpose! My husband and I learned on this evening's news that if there is salt water flooding and the power goes out while the electricity is still on, it takes a lot longer to rectify the situation. If, however, the power is off and there is salt water flooding, it takes a lot less time to get power back on. Ann is not located in any of the A, B, or C areas, though she is close to C, I believe she said, so that helps. Ann has lots of battery operated lighting, and she has pre-grounded her coffee, so she'll have drip coffee in the morning despite not being able to use her electric coffeemaker. Ann said she tried to call Mark Roberts in Boston, but she got his voicemail, so no word there. I told Ann I'd call her tomorrow just to check in. Hope everyone else out east is safe. The trip was work related, but I did sneak off to Little Havana on Friday night. It was fun to do some night shooting. ISOs very high in many of these shots--1600 - 5000 ISO.
