Re: Hardly a Pentax in sight ...
From: Joseph McAllister Back when Pentax was Pentax, according to some folk at a Pro camera store in Seattle, they shot themselves in the foot with a few bad decisions on how companies who sold Pentax for years would have to stock the whole line, or bye bye. All but the true camera stores either dropped the line, or bought elsewhere, not directly from Pentax USA, to stock the models they felt were what their customers would buy. Second hand knowledge, but it sounded like that's the reason they dropped the LX, the 645, and the 6x7 line, and therefor did not have any Pentax accessories other than new/old stock. That's why we all look to BH and the other NYC catalog/magazine sellers, or eBay. According to the owners of the two local independent camera stores here in Raleigh, Pentax dropped them, not the other way round. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Typically, when you connect a digital camera via USB, at least two types of drivers have to be activated: first - for the connection, and second, - for the mass storage device. It looks like the second one is not there. I don't know about Canon DSLRs, but smaller, PS digital cameras from Canon don't work with the generic devices for that (at least under Windows) but require a special driver to be installed before the system can recognize them as a storage device. In the absence of the driver, only software programs that know how to work with cameras would be able to read the content of the camera's storage. Apparently, LR (which I think is capable of doing tethering with Canon DSLRs), knows how to talk to the camera directly. Amazon - no respect for Pentaxoids
Today, Amazon has one of its pre-Black-Friday lightning deals: Rokinon 85mm/1.4 lens. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006C1ILUC/ They offer these lenses at a discounted price ($239-269, depending on the mount), but they offer only 3 mount options: Canon, Nikon (AF-confirm), Nikon DSLR. Pentax option is not on sale (nor Olympus or Sony)! Boo, Amazon! ;-) And you, fellow PDMLers, were complaining about brick-and-mortar stores.. Igor PS. Interesting, that Nikon DSLR version was claimed within first ~10 minutes or so, while the rest were still at 15% Canon and 38% Nikon (AF-confirmation) 35 minutes later. However, I suspect much were fewer lenses available with Nikon DSLR option. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO - The Flying Aussie (messenger photo)
Not really, except that during my eight weeks off the bike, being a walking/metropassing courier with a camera, most of my photos were of messengers. I might at least have the genesis of something, but I don't know just what yet. Show? Book? I have a few shots of messengers off the bike but mostly it's guys and gals riding by me. I feel a bunch of ride-by shots isn't really enough to do anything meaningful. We'll see... Thanks for asking! Pain is all but gone and what pain I feel is almost certainly soft tissue and not the break. Mild concern that the x-rays are not showing much bone between the clavicle and the chip that broke off, but the doc said that sometimes x-rays just don't show that new bone well. And since the two ligaments in the area appear to be strong and supporting things well, and since my pain is all but gone, riding should be okay. RE: Another example of PDML Anglo-American Collaboration-a blurb book!
Very cool, and a great idea! Terrific photos make for a wonderful keepsake. Cheers, frank --- Original Message --- From: Christine Aguila christ...@caguila.com Sent: November 17, 2012 11/17/12 To: PDML List pdml@pdml.net Subject: Another example of PDML Anglo-American Collaboration-a blurb book! Hi Everyone: Chris and Karin Mitchell, Bob W., and I would like to share a project we worked on as a thank you gift for Mike Wilson and his family for their wonderful hospitality while in Northumbria this past summer. The book is completed and the Wilsons have received it--with enthusiasm I might add! Our collaborative process was as follows: 1) The Mitchells and Bob W. set up Google Doc pages, posted their photos at full size, then sent me the link. 2) I downloaded all photos and imported the photos into Lightroom 3) In Lightroom using the book module, I began the layout of the book--and saved the project. Don't forget to do that if working on a Lightroom book project. Very important. 4) I wanted to show the Mitchells and Bob a draft, so I took screen shots of each page, saved the screen shots as jpegs, created a web gallery in Lightroom, then sent the link to the Brits for feedback. They commented on layout, cover ideas, typos et al. 5) At the same time, I ordered a proof copy of the book, which helped a lot because I found even more typos after looking at the hardcopy. My only complaint at this point is blurb should offer a discounted proof copy. But anyway . . . 6) After looking at the first draft, which had no cover yet, Chris Mitchell suggested superimposing the cover with our text in the highway sign. That work was done in Photoshop Elements 10, which I purchased for the project, but I needed to get the application anyway with my switch from PC to Mac. 5) So, then I revised, uploaded to blurb, and I purchased the book. 6) I signed the book, shipped it off to the Mitchells so they could sign it, then Chris met up with Bob W. and he signed it. Then it was shipped to the Wilsons, and I'm happy to announce it's safely in their hands. The entire process was easy as punch. I was nervous because this was my first book, but Lightroom 4 makes the process so easy--really I was amazed at how easy it was. The only real hard part is finding the time to actually do such projects. I have lots of ideas now for gifts and my own work, but finding time will be the number one challenge. As the preview shows, we chose an image wrap cover, pro pearlline paper, and some elegant end papers. At first I wasn't keen on the image wrap cover, but to do the cover the way I wanted to and as quickly as I wanted to, the image wrap ended up the best choice, and surprisingly, I liked the result. I had a prejudice against image wrap, but I'm over that now. You should be pleased with that photo. It's pretty cool. Wonderful light! I've had a very rocky relationship with mine. It's an utter failure at what I bought it for, that being a fast, wide angle lens for shooting dancers at close quarters, in low light. I just can't get it to focus properly. I expect that with focus peaking on a K-01 and manual focus, it might actually do pretty well. It also doesn't seem to work as well as I'd like with the astrotracer. One thing that it has turned out to be wonderful at though is as a wide angle close-up lens. I was shooting mushrooms in my yard with it today, and am pretty happy with this photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/8194078361/ -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

So, everyone's agreed to share our work, not to sell copies since this is a personal project, but rather just to share the result of our collaboration, which we are all quite proud of. Need bigger pictures
For years, I’ve been sizing the “large” versions of the pictures on my blog to 1024(max) x 720(max). This last week I got my hands on a Nexus 10 (2560x1600) and they look sort of small and dingy.I haven’t had any quality time with an Apple Retina display, but I bet the same issues arise. This is going to require some study, and I bet my site’s pages are all going to have to become more complex. -T -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Need bigger pictures
Which reminded me, Dunc wrote a piece on the subject back in August: http://duncandavidson.com/blog/2012/08/retina_ready Since my blog software is all hand-crafted, I smell some nasty-ish hacking in my future. But even worse than that is the fact that, over the years, I’ve been exporting all my pix from the RAW originals at 1024x720, so once the software’s done, I’m facing the task of going back and re-exporting them all. And to make it worse, in the early years of my blog I cleverly renamed them after exporting.
