K5 focus screen - user changable? Does the K5 have user changable focus screens? Sure does. I put a katz-eye in mine. It’s pretty straight forward, though you might need to use different shims to adjust the focus properly (available as spares from Pentax). - Peter -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Adobe acknowledges cool reception
Good synopsis Bruce. Two things I notice in their PR piece. First, they seem to assume that Adobe users are, or desire to be, part of a world-wide creative community. This seems to ignore those users who just want to sit quietly and use the tools on their own, without extensive sharing, collaboration, etc. Second, it has forever been acknowledged that the Adobe suite of applications, and even Photoshop, are overkill for most photographers. Adobe in the past has provided Elements and Lightroom as more targeted applications for this niche audience. Now they are saying that ...we are looking at potential offerings that recognize the photography community – because it is so broad – has some unique needs. I predict a CC-like PS Elements to replace the current Elements. We'll get all the features of Instagram etc. so we can better process and share our mobile phone snaps. Raw Season Crowdfunding drive
Hello all, Some you may remember the Belgrade Raw project from my previous posts. It's a collective aimed at documenting the real Belgrade via strait documentary photography. Read all about our crowdfunding drive here - http://artget.belgraderaw.com/donate Short version: Belgrade Raw has had some success and ended up in charge of the main photo-gallery in Belgrade for 2013. We made an exhibitions plan including a lot of great international projects (D.Webber's Interrogations, M. Lutton's Only Unity, Pete Brook's Prison Photography) - (a pdf can be seen here - http://artget.belgraderaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Artget-program-Belgrade-Raw1.pdf). Since the gallery, as all culture in Serbia is basically not funded, we focused on things we could do without funds. One thing we would like is to bring Blake Andrews, Donald Webber and Pete Brook to Serbia. They would each hold a workshop, present at a lecture and also exhibit there work. For this we need the money for plane tickets (they all agreed to donate their time and work to us). Besides that, we want to publish a book about the Raw Season, once it is finished, containing the information and photographs from the exhibitions, workshops and lectures that happen during it. If any of this sounds interesting, or some of the awards we offer in return for donations do, please consider donating, or just spreading the word. Thanks! I'd like to recommend an equivalent to the K-5--similar specs etc. Would the D90 be the one to recommend? The D7000 came out at the same time as the K-5 and had the same sensor. The D7100 is an upgrade to that. The D7000/71000 have the advantage that they will work well with the old AIS manual focus lenses. Even the old (spotmatic era) Nikon lenses can be modified to work with AIS bodies, with full metering. The D90 will only meter with the autofocus lenses. Apart from low light focus, and a tendancy to splatter lubricant on the sensor for the first 2,000 frames, the D600, is a very nice, relatively affordable full frame sensor camera (which will also work with all the nikon lenses). A lot of the low end nikons will only work well with autofocus lenses that have their own internal autofocus motors. The D600 is almost there for me, but the auto-bracket will only allow 3 shots my K20D allows me to choose 3 or 5 shots. Plus, I don't if the D600 lets you to set the bracketing interval like the K20D does. The F 70-210 is the best of all of them, a good copy will be sharp though out it's zoom range, a bad copy will be a little soft at 210mm until you stop down a bit, I've had both. The Takumar F 70-200 and a version of the Pentax F share the cosmetics of the SMC P F 70-210 but neither is up to even a /bad/ copy. Re: 70-200 F4-5.6 FA opinions?
I believe the Takumar F and the Pentax, (not SMC), F in 70-200 are the same lens with different names. The Pentax F IIRC also came in FA like livery but was pretty much the same lens as the Takumar. The FA 70-200mm f4.0~5.6 and the F 70-210mm f4.0~5.6 were different optical formulas. The F is supposed to be better optically, (sharper, whatever that means, since there's no objective measure of sharpness), at the long end, the FA has better electronics and coatings. You pays your money and you takes your choice. Here's a sample of the SMC-P F 70=210mm at 210mm wide open. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20%20watchdogrev.html (Camera Pentax *ist-Ds) On 5/29/2013 12:35 PM, John Francis wrote: On Wed, May 29, 2013 at 02:59:50PM +0200, Alan C wrote: The FA 70-200 is an SMC Pentax FA. On May 28, 2013, at 8:30 PM, Eric Weir wrote: I now know what happened: I had forgotten that I had a new hard drive put in at the end of December! And now I know even better. I have been really, really stupid. This is the story: Prior to getting the new drive I had been excluding my photo database from Time Machine backups and was backing them up instea in a daily sequential backup to two disks I had set up in Carbon Copy Cloner. When the new disk was installed I decided to include the photo database in the Time Machine backup. I did so---I thought---by checking the topmost checkbox in my user directory to select all the folders in it. I then deleted the two backups on the other two drives. Didn't need to. I had lots of unused space on all my drives. I just did. I'm kind of a nut about not hanging onto stuff I don't use. Problem was, since the photo database had been excluded from the Time Machine backups, it did not exist on the Time Machine backup from which I restored my data after the new disk was installed. At that point my photos did not officially exist anymore. Could've recovered them in a variety of ways at that point if I'd been aware of what I'd done, but I wasn't, and now it's over. Lessons learned, at least as of the moment: [1] Again, pay attention to your photo database. Visit it often. Don't assume that it's safe. Make sure it's safe. [2] Go in for all the redundancy you can take advantage of. E.g., Carbon Copy Cloner has an option that archives all modifications and deletions until there is less that fifteen Gb on the drive. I chose instead the option that deletes everything from the target that's not in the source. If I'd chosen the first option, given how much free space I had on my drives, I would've been able to recover my photo database from the CCC archive. Those are two big ones. I pretty sure there will be more in the near future. Bruce and Steve, I'll be getting back to you regarding your last responses to me ASAP. Thanks to all who responded. Re: 70-200 F4-5.6 FA opinions?
No personal experience, but here are the shots taken with the FA 70-200mm f4-5.6 that were accepted into the Pentax Photo Gallery: http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/photos/gallery/query?camera=lens=1380 On Wed, May 29, 2013 at 3:28 PM, P.J. There is no SMC Pentax F 70-200mm There is also an SMC Pentax F 70-210 ED with good reviews and a Takumar F (cheap line without MC). Seems the SMC and/or ED glass versions are superior. Re: 70-200 F4-5.6 FA opinions?
Refer to: http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/zooms/_non-SMC/index.html Note there is no SMC prefix. They may be optically the same. Alan C John Francis wrote: Are you sure you meant to put that qualifier there? AFAIK the F line (effectively the first auto-focus series) had multi-coating, just like the earlier M and A lenses, and the subsequent FA lenses. The difference between the F and the FA lenses is mostly in the information that is transmitted over the digital signal pin; while the exact details escape me now I think it might be that the FA lenses also tell the camera the focus distance the lens is set to, which allows for more complex exposure metering. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
