K5 focus screen - user changable? Does the K5 have user changable focus

Sure does. I put a katz-eye in mine. It’s pretty straight forward, though
you might need to use different shims to adjust the focus properly
(available as spares from Pentax).

Re: 70-200 F4-5.6 FA opinions?

The FA 70-200 is an SMC Pentax FA. Good reviews. (I have the 100-300mm which
is very good)

The F 70-200 is a Pentax F (Cheaper line without MC). There is no SMC
Pentax F 70-200mm

There is also an SMC Pentax F 70-210 ED with good reviews and a Takumar F
(cheap line without MC).

Seems the SMC and/or ED glass versions are superior.

Re: Adobe acknowledges cool reception

2013-05-29 Thread Stan Halpin
Good synopsis Bruce.
Two things I notice in their PR piece. First, they seem to assume that Adobe
users are, or desire to be, part of a world-wide creative community. This seems

While Darren looks forward to Spring to go chasing tornados, the rest
of Nebraska is trying to get a good night's sleep. The weather radio
has blown it's horn in the middle of the last two nights and the
weather report threatens to make that three in a row.

That's how we tell it's spring in Nebraska. The snow melts, the
tornado sirens blow and flowers bloom. Not necessarily in that order.

Anyway, the lilac bushes bloomed and I thought I'd get this photo
 before they blow away.

 http://georgesinos.com/blog/2013/5/28/nebraska-spring

This one was shot with the 100mm macro on a K7 and a monopod. Can't
remember which 100mm. It has an aperture ring.

I gotta cut back on the Mountain Dew. I used to be able to hand hold
 this stuff.

Are you sure you meant to put that qualifier there?

AFAIK the F line (effectively the first auto-focus series)
had multi-coating, just like the earlier M and A lenses,
and the subsequent FA lenses. The difference between the
F and the FA lenses is mostly in the information that is
transmitted over the digital signal pin; while the exact
details escape me now I think it might be that the FA
lenses also tell the camera the focus distance the lens is
set to, which allows for more complex exposure metering.

Raw Season Crowdfunding drive

2013-05-29 Thread Luka Knezevic-Strika
Hello all,

Some you may remember the Belgrade Raw project from my previous posts.
It's a collective aimed at documenting the real Belgrade via strait
documentary photography.

Read all about our crowdfunding drive here -
http://artget.belgraderaw.com/donate

Short version:
Belgrade Raw has had some success and ended up in charge of the main
photo-gallery in Belgrade for 2013. We made an exhibitions plan
including a lot of great international projects (D.Webber's
Interrogations, M. Lutton's Only Unity, Pete Brook's Prison
Photography) - (a pdf can be seen here -
http://artget.belgraderaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Artget-program-Belgrade-Raw1.pdf).
Since the gallery, as all culture in Serbia is basically not funded,
we focused on things we could do without funds. One thing we would
like is to bring Blake Andrews, Donald Webber and Pete Brook to
Serbia. They would each hold a workshop, present at a lecture and also
exhibit there work.

For this we need the money for plane tickets (they all agreed to
donate their time and work to us). Besides that, we want to publish a
book about the Raw Season, once it is finished, containing the
information and photographs from the exhibitions, workshops and
lectures that happen during it.

If any of this sounds interesting, or some of the awards we offer in
return for donations do, please consider donating, or just spreading
the word. Thanks!

Hi Everyone:

The D7000 came out at the same time as the K-5 and had the same sensor.
The D7100 is an upgrade to that.

The D7000/71000 have the advantage that they will work well with the old
AIS manual focus lenses. Even the old (spotmatic era) Nikon lenses can be
modified to work with AIS bodies, with full metering.
The D90 will only meter with the autofocus lenses.

Apart from low light focus, and a tendancy to splatter lubricant on the sensor
for the first 2,000 frames, the D600, is a very nice, relatively affordable
full frame sensor camera (which will also work with all the nikon lenses).

A lot of the low end nikons will only work well with autofocus lenses that
have their own internal autofocus motors.

The D600 is almost there for me, but the auto-bracket will only allow 3
shots my K20D allows me to choose 3 or 5 shots.

Plus, I don't if the D600 lets you to set the bracketing interval like
the K20D does. I'm pretty sure the K7/K5 do all that the K20D is capable
of with regards to bracketing.

Re: 70-200 F4-5.6 FA opinions?

2013-05-29 Thread P.J. Alling
The F 70-210 is the best of all of them, a good copy will be sharp
though out it's zoom range, a bad copy will be a little soft at 210mm
until you stop down a bit, I've had both. The Takumar F 70-200 and a
version of the Pentax F share the cosmetics of the SMC P F 70-210 but
neither is up to even a /bad/ copy.

The F 70-200 is a Pentax F (Cheaper line without MC). There is no SMC
Pentax F 70-200mm

There is also an SMC Pentax F 70-210 ED with good reviews and a
Takumar F (cheap line without MC).

Seems the SMC and/or ED glass versions are superior.

Re: 70-200 F4-5.6 FA opinions?

2013-05-29 Thread P.J. Alling
I believe the Takumar F and the Pentax, (not SMC), F in 70-200 are the
same lens with different names. The Pentax F IIRC also came in FA like
livery but was pretty much the same lens as the Takumar. The FA
70-200mm f4.0~5.6 and the F 70-210mm f4.0~5.6 were different optical
formulas. The F is supposed to be better optically, (sharper, whatever
that means, since there's no objective measure of sharpness), at the
long end, the FA has better electronics and coatings. You pays your
money and you takes your choice.

Here's a sample of the SMC-P F 70=210mm at 210mm wide open.

How to clean an add-on lens?

2013-05-29 Thread Igor Roshchin

Argh!..
Today, I pulled an old add-on x2 close-up lens (attaches as a filter),
just to realize that the foam that came with it is all melted.
After sitting for a few years in ambience, in the closet (in hot Texas),
a piece of foam that used to cushion and prop the lens inside the box
sort of melted and left a glue-like residue on the lens.

Any ideas on what I can use to remove that residue?
Just a lens cleaning paper wouldn't work... What type of cleaning solution
(solvent?) can be used?

Thank you,

Igor

On May 28, 2013, at 8:30 PM, Eric Weir wrote:

I now know what happened: I had forgotten that I had a new hard drive put in
 at the end of December!

And now I know even better. I have been really, really stupid. This is the
story: Prior to getting the new drive I had been excluding my photo database
from Time Machine backups and was backing them up instea in a daily sequential
backup to two disks I had set up in Carbon Copy Cloner. When the new disk was
installed I decided to include the photo database in the Time Machine backup. I
did so---I thought---by checking the topmost checkbox in my user directory to
select all the folders in it. I then deleted the two backups on the other two
drives. Didn't need to. I had lots of unused space on all my drives. I just
did. I'm kind of a nut about not hanging onto stuff I don't use.

Problem was, since the photo database had been excluded from the Time Machine
backups, it did not exist on the Time Machine backup from which I restored my
data after the new disk was installed. At that point my photos did not
officially exist anymore. Could've recovered them in a variety of ways at that
point if I'd been aware of what I'd done, but I wasn't, and now it's over.

Lessons learned, at least as of the moment: [1] Again, pay attention to your
photo database. Visit it often. Don't assume that it's safe. Make sure it's
safe. [2] Go in for all the redundancy you can take advantage of. E.g., Carbon
Copy Cloner has an option that archives all modifications and deletions until
there is less that fifteen Gb on the drive. I chose instead the option that
deletes everything from the target that's not in the source. If I'd chosen the
first option, given how much free space I had on my drives, I would've been
able to recover my photo database from the CCC archive. Those are two big ones.
I pretty sure there will be more in the near future.

Bruce and Steve, I'll be getting back to you regarding your last responses to
me ASAP.

Thanks to all who responded.

At the risk of boring anyone to tears, Alma and I went to a friend's

edit!) but managed to grab some candids. Tried to avoid doing whatever
the official snapper was doing, here are some results. Note you can
speed through very easily. Venue is the Cherwell Boat House, Oxford, and
yes that is a mark 2 jaguar and yes the location has been used in

Hi Don, thanks, to be perfectly honest it's not much of a pano, the

but made for a more pleasing overall composition I think.

Thanks Charles, really I don't often find the stop down beyond f8 when
shooting ultra wides, the image is sharp but it's more to do with the
fact that the camera was resting on a very solid steel post I suspect.
I used the 2sec mirror pre-fire so that I could get my hands away,
that's why the vertical angle of view isn't optimal, I should revisit
the spot and use a tripod I think.

Thanks for all who viewed and especially those who commented too.

Women are being encouraged to freeze their eggs at a relatively early age
if they are going to wait a few years before conceiving (in vitro). It
increases their chances of successful conception in their 40s.

So the ad is suggesting that freezing your eggs at age 30 is a gift to

AFAIK the F line (effectively the first auto-focus series)
had multi-coating, just like the earlier M and A lenses,
and the subsequent FA lenses. The difference between the
F and the FA lenses is mostly in the information that is
transmitted over the digital signal pin; while the exact
details escape me now I think it might be that the FA
lenses also tell the camera the focus distance the lens is
set to, which allows for more complex exposure metering.
