October PUG - "Animal Kingdom" - is up!

2013-10-02 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

Lots to like in this gallery but my favourite is "Will work for a
brush" by Bruce - it's the cat's whiskers

Ann's "Red Panda" is another favourite along with Ken's "Eyes on You"
and Matthew's "Big Horn Sheep" (would have loved to have seen one of
those when I was in the US). Stan's "Kit N Caboodle" struck a
familiar note - I have the same routine with our moggie 'Blackjack'
and I get the same fixed stare.

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous Gallery there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

+

Coming up for October is 'Architectural'.

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:
* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body
or lens used is Pentax.
* If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to
ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line.

* Nominal closing date: 30 September.

tarnation: used in exclamations as a euphemism for "damnation". Origins in the
late 18th century.

administrivia: becoming common shorthand for "administrative trivia", trans.:
"here's a bunch of miscellaneous facts and directives you need to know about X that
you want to use/learn/operate/enjoy/etc.".

tarnish: a film or stain formed on the exposed surface of a metal or mineral
whether through oxidation or other chemical reaction.

tarnation: used in exclamations as a euphemism for "damnation". Origins in the
late 18th century.

administrivia: becoming common shorthand for "administrative trivia", trans.:
"here's a bunch of miscellaneous facts and directives you need to know about X
that you want to use/learn/operate/enjoy/etc.".

tarnish: a film or stain formed on the exposed surface of a metal or mineral

Tarnation is an oxidization process that affects fine silver. The effete elite
would probably rather speak of patination, not realizing that patination is not
the acquisition of a patina, but rather the process of acquiring a patent.

Re: Quick Release recommendations...

2013-10-02 Thread Darren Addy
If you'll permit me another follow-up, I have now found the clamp I'm
going to purchase:
The Sunwayfoto DLC-60 - 60mm Duo-Lever Clamp (Arca Compatible)
It is brilliant, because it gives you the best of both worlds: The
ease-of-use of the lever clamp and the adjustability of the
conventional screw type release. The adjustability is useful two ways:
1) you can use ANYBODY's Arca-type plate. I've seen some that wouldn't
fit due to the powder coating being a bit too thick, for example. No
problem with the DLC-60, just open it up a bit on the screw side.
2) Lever Types by themselves don't provide as much pressure as the
conventional screw does. It's physics, as Mr. Monotone, the Acratech
president explains in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzTqxqD6XPY
So by having a conventional screw side AND a lever side you can
effectively adjust the "firmness" of the lever side (not possible with
a lever alone).
Here is a short video of the DLC-60
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jENbecEtKQg

Here is the review page on Amazon (9 out of 10 5-star reviews)
http://www.amazon.com/SUNWAYFOTO-Duo-Lever-Compatible-DLC-60-Sunway/product-reviews/
and the review/product page at B&H
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/827708-REG/Sunwayfoto_DLC_60_DLC_60_Duo_Lever_Clamp.html
Six 5-star reviews (out of 6)

I like that the lever can't open by getting caught on something (like
while walking through trees). It is a two-stage lever.
It also has a tapped hole (3/8") which means it will go right on my
lowest-cost Arca-Swiss p0 with 1/4" and 3/8" threaded disk.

Perhaps the best part about this clamp is that it will allow me to use
more inexpensive QR plates (which was the main point of this whole
exercise). I just cannot stomach paying $49 (or more) for the "big
brand" Quick Release plates when I can get a perfectly good one like
the Sunwayfoto DPG-39 Universal Quick Release Plate for $22 or the
wider DPG-50 for $28.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/837741-REG/Sunwayfoto_DPG_50_DPG_50_Universal_Quick_Release_Plate.html

I will give you my impressions once these items are actually purchased
and in my possession (which might be a few weeks - between the p0 ball
head and the M* 300mm my Paypal card needs to stop smoking first).
Hope others find some of this useful.

Cotty, email list handling software traditionally accepts meta
commands within submitted messages to do things like subscribe,
unsubscribe, list the subscribers, etc. They are usually only
interpreted immediately following a newline. This list has had these
meta commands disabled AFAICT, but if one is recognized the message is
stuck in an approval-required queue / black-hole.

Your best bet is to completely reword your message and try it again. :-)

I need an adequate definition of "tarnation" first.

Sometimes it is nice to be different. It helps to have others focus on your

Re: Abused lens images (not for the squeamish)

2013-10-02 Thread John Francis

The front element always needs to be at least as large as the
diameter calculated by the formula Darren gave. The mechanical
and optical problems in building a zoom lens frequently require
a physical front element that is larger; the longer the zoom
range, and the shorter the minimum focal length, the more likely
you are to need extra light-gathering ability.

Yes. The effective maximum aperture of a system is a function of the
diameter of the objective.
The formula is D=F/f
where D = the objective diameter
F = focal length
f= the maximum aperture
Change any one variable in the formula and another must change.

So if you make the objective larger the maximum aperture will be greater.
For the F* 300mm f4.5, 300/4.5= 66.666... so it should not surprise us
that the filter size is 67mm.
The formula above is for telescopes, which normally only have an
objective lens grouping, while telephoto lenses have multiple lens
groupings, but that formula will get you close.

The 300mm f4 will give you an answer of 75mm for the objective
diameter (77mm filter size)
while a 300mm f2.8 will result in a 107mm diameter objective (meaning
that any filters are ususally put at the rear).

interesting, with a nice view, but somewhat out of place. It was still
under construction when I was passing by. The framing is a little

True, we don't *know* yet. But Pentax has been very consistent in
their naming conventions and you can see the cameras change in their
capabilities as the Image Processor matures. You can find all of this
easily by simply Googling.

*istD series used Milbeaut version 3.
K10D used Milbeaut version 4 (called PRIME for Pentax Real IMage Engine)
K7/Km/K5 used Milbeaut version 5 (all called PRIME II) long dynamic
range, but Focus Peaking not possible.
K30/K01 (Prime-M) Focus-Peaking capable, but less dynamic range (version 6)
K-3, 645DII & FF (PRIME III) The Image Processor to take Pentax/Ricoh
into the future (Milbeaut version 7)

There are clearly other differences between the cameras (sensor, SAFOX
AF system, etc.) but each generation of Milbeaut Image Processor
ushers in a whole new generation of cameras (this will be true for all
manufactureres that use the Fujitsu Milbeaut engine (with their own
Proprietary name for it).

Some of the plates have 1/4-20 holes in the bottom. These are very handy.

Re: Quick Release recommendations...

2013-10-02 Thread Doug Brewer

Igor,

I came to Kirk and Arca Swiss from the regular Bogen/Manfrotto QR plates
many of us start with. There wasn't a lot of auditioning different
plates; I got a couple of ball heads, one on a Gitzo leg set and another
for my ancient Bogen 3021 set. A friend suggested Kirk plates, even
letting me try one out for a bit, and I was sold. The plates are
solidly, beautifully, machined and in around fifteen years of use I've
never had one fail in any way.

I'd like to piggy-back on this thread with two questions:

1. Doug and Stan gave praises for Kirk plates.
So, what makes them different (and good)?

2. I like the idea of the universal (arca-swiss + RC2) clamp plate that
Larry has referenced:
https://peakdesignltd.com/plates/

I wonder if there are any drawbacks because of this functionality

3. I also wonder if there are such universal plates that are compatible
with arca-swiss and RC5 at the same time.

The latter question is probably aimed at Cotty, - as he has (had) a head
that takes RC5, - Manfrotto 3433:
http://www.komkon.org/~igor/Tripod/_IR27447.jpg
(It used to be used with #3433PL plates, which are now replaced with
501PL, and the new heads are 501, 503 and NG).
This type of heads/QR plates are typically used for video-cameras.

My thoughts as well Boris. At this point in time all we know is that

Re: Quick Release recommendations...

Well I sold my MGB books so I went ahead and ordered the Arca Swiss
Monoball P0 with Panning System With 1/4" and 3/8" Threaded Disk
http://www.adorama.com/AWMBP0.html

I see now that they also offer the P0 with a "classic Arca-Swiss" top
or the one with Flip-Lock, but the price is $180-200 higher. I think I
would rather try the Sunway clamp (Arca-Swiss compatible)
http://www.amazon.com/SUNWAYFOTO-Discal-Compatible-DDY-64i-Sunway/product-reviews/B009EIQ41I/
and put the extra $150 in my pocket.

I may give some of the inexpensive Arca-Swiss compatible plates off
eBay a try also. That part of the equation just isn't that complicated
(machining-wise) but I think it is wise to put the money in the real
deal on the ball head side of the equation. For now, I'm just buying
the ball head and I will have to physically screw it onto the camera
or lens. I've wanted a good head to go on my 3021BPRO for a while now,
and there is just no way to do astrophotography without a rock steady
head.

Again, thanks to all for the input on the QR system. I haven't
committed to one yet, but I'm leaning towards the "classic" Arca-Swiss
since there are so many choices (including cheaper "knock-offs") for
L-brackets, etc.

Hump or bump?
If it is a bump there will soon be pics on every tabloid at the checkout.
But I suspect a hump that houses a connector for something.
If you get a remote dashboard connected via a mini din, that would be sooo
cool.

Re: Abused lens images (not for the squeamish)

2013-10-02 Thread Darren Addy
Yes. The effective maximum aperture of a system is a function of the
diameter of the objective.
The formula is D=F/f
where D = the objective diameter
F = focal length
f= the maximum aperture
