Boris PESO #03 - Grocery store and a new lens
Hi! Have a look here: http://pentax-ways.blogspot.co.il/2014/01/2014-03-grocery-store.html This shot was made with my freshly acquired soft lens. It is one of a kind lens that I ordered from a guy who makes all kinds of photography related works including some very interesting lenses. This one is Chevalier landscape lens and it was made to my custom order in a barrel with native Leica mount, though no rangefinder coupling. The focal length is 38 mm. On 1/24/2014 10:19 AM, Bob W wrote: The apparent believability of photography arises from the mechanical relation between the image and the subject. In other words, the sensor records something that was definitely out there - unlike painting or writing, where the text or image is mediated by the author's eye, brain and hand. Now, this believability is only apparent. We all know that all sorts of things can intervene between taking the photo and us seeing it. Therefore, as with written journalism and say war art, we rely on the photographer, writer or artist to be honest. It is the author's integrity that gives written journalism its power, and the same is true of photojournalism. If we learned that a Pulitzer prize-winning author had not been at the front he described, for example, but had spent his time in a hotel bar 50 miles from the action, or had invented the things he described, or omitted relevant information, his writing would lose all its authority, however good it was as writing. The same standards must apply to photojournalism. We must be able to trust the photographer in order to trust his photographs. This guy was dishonest in what he did, so he loses all his authority as a witness. B I'm 100% with you on this one, Bob. Especially in photography such as this, the integrity and honesty are paramount because these images have great impact on great many people. Re: Question re zoom lens fine focus adjustment
Hi Boris, The sheet for a gadget (don't remember the name) I use for such calibration says there is no right focal length. You can either select the length you use most frequently (perhaps better) or, select a length in the middle. In any case, the calibration will not be perfect at 17mm and 70mm (assuming you haven't calibrated for these). In the absence of a physical defect and with a x3 zoom like yours, the calibration should still work acceptably. I think it's a wonderful, elegant composition Bulent. I see the yin/yang-ness of it, or the interlocking tessellation of the two figures: leaf and background. My interpretation is that the camera AF system measures a phase error 1.4x larger than it should be, and drives the lens AF motor more than it should. (With screw-drive lenses, the teleconverter is geared to reduce the amount the lens is driven.) Besides that, there's the fact that the camera doesn't know the change in effective focal length for shake reduction, and there's no record of the teleconverter in the EXIF. Re: Boris PESO #03 - Grocery store and a new lens
Thanks, Bruce. You see, at 38mm of focal length is not portrait lens per se. However given the crop it turns to something like 58mm as far as angle of view goes and that's not bad. I made some group portraits of my girls and I quite liked the result. I used to have F 85/2.8 soft which was obviously more mature, but it was heavy and on the cropped sensor it was too narrow AOV... While the likes of 50-60mm of EFL seem to be my sweet spot... Boris On 1/25/2014 10:25 PM, Bruce Walker wrote: Beautiful, Boris. Re: Boris PESO #03 - Grocery store and a new lens
Thanks, Stan. I never think of my photography as of source of profit. May be I could make a big print and give it to the grocery shop owners :-). I will be able to take you just there as it sits in rather special location as far as tourist attractions in Tel Aviv go. You will judge for yourself. I reckon I will be taking this lens with us when you come :-). On 1/25/2014 11:10 PM, Stanley Halpin wrote: Interesting effect. Re: Question re zoom lens fine focus adjustment
Bulent, you really made me curious. So I went and looked up the focal length distribution of this zoom lens... This is what I've found: By far the most used FL is 17 mm, second most used is 70 mm, which is rather natural - as far as typical usage pattern of a zoom lens goes. Then the FLs from 34mm to 63mm together amount to approximately the same number of frames as 70mm... Nonetheless, I will do as Paul suggested. I will probably start with 70mm, then go down to 40mm and then finally try for 17mm hoping that by the time I arrive there no correction will be necessary and that correction at 70mm will be very close to that at 40mm... Boris On 1/25/2014 8:52 PM, Bulent Celasun wrote: Hi Boris, The sheet for a gadget (don't remember the name) I use for such calibration says there is no right focal length. In any case, the calibration will not be perfect at 17mm and 70mm (assuming you haven't calibrated for these). In the absence of a physical defect and with a x3 zoom like yours, the calibration should still work acceptably. Re: Question re zoom lens fine focus adjustment
Boris, I hope the corrections at either end turns out to be on the same side (plus or minus). It is rather unlikely to find the same adjustment (let us say plus 5) fits both ends. The magnifications at zoom ends (17mm vs 70mm) differ significantly but the step motor's hardware remains the same. I also think that, of the two ends of the range, adjusting for the tele end should be better. The problems of focusing are a lot easier to spot there. Have a photographically pleasing Sunday :) Bulent - http://patoloji.gen.tr http://celasun.wordpress.com/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/bc_the_path/ http://photo.net/photodb/user?user_id=2226822 http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/artists/bulentcelasun 2014-01-26 Boris Liberman bori...@gmail.com: Bulent, you really made me curious.
