I am glad, I am not the only linguistic nerd here.

Looking up one of the jokes posted in response led me to this forum:

I suspects other resident nerds might enjoy some of those jokes as well.

It has been discussed many times in many venues that the correct usage is
10 items or FEWER vs 10 items or less (and apparently there is no
complete consensus, even though I am on the fewer side in this case).

But in this case, the situation is worse:
 UP TO .. or LESS...

I joined the K-3 group on Facebook -- hell, I don't know why. But I

I encountered a photo posting from one Yoshiaki Kobayashi. He
helpfully captioned it:

Not surprisingly Bing offers No translation available. Damn! Bing no

Re: PESO: Pansy

2014-06-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Bob. I planted these very early this year, and they are still
thriving. Often, but this stage of spring, they have faded or been
crowded out by the petunias and portulacas I plant between them.

This is actually just a test image of my new (to me) K-5IIS. So far,
I really like the controls and the mechanics of the camera. I like
the way the batters over closes firmly and opens easily, unlike my K-r
and *istD. I also like the button one has to press to change the
camera mode. With my older cameras, I would often switch modes
inadvertently while gripping the camera to crawl into position or
climb a step ladder to reach the right spot for a macro.

Although I like the feel and operation of the K-5IIS, I am a bit
disappointed. I spent all that money on another camera, and my photos
still suck. It must be the lenses. I guess I just have to by a more
expensive lens.

Re: Peso: Pigeon Point

2014-06-04 Thread Jack Davis
Christine,
I took a long look, this AM, trying to decide if this image reflects a lean of
the tower. I worked for sometime with crop tool lines and my eye.
Something that does tend to imply an overall slope/lean might be the roof line
of the building in front. I attribute that to the fact that
the right side is further from the Pentax than the left.
I think you're just trying to mess up my Golden Ratio. HA!!

Really nice tone and composition - the fenceline leading up to the lighthouse
gives a great sense of depth.

My only nit is that the lighthouse has a slight lean to the right. I think
the image would be improved by a small counter-clockwise rotation.

Thanks, David. I don't spend as much time on them as on my other

attractive blooms, it's hard to get a nice one without a distracting

A sad scene Dan. Jersey diners are a great heritage for New Jersey and its
sad to see their numbers lessen. We have a few here in Michigan but you

A great book on Jersey diners is 'Jersey Diners' by Peter Genouese in case

Thanks, Igor.

This image is greatly troubling to me. As you may know, I am a fan of
classic Jersey diners.

This building was the Whitehouse Diner, quite a popular establishment
in its day. Legend has it that, decades ago, the owner had an
argument with a patron, lost his temper, grabbed a cleaver and chased
everyone out of what had been a packed diner. He locked it up, and
never returned, and it has been in a state of decay ever since.

Its condition has gotten a lot worse over the severe weather of this
past winter, This is my original blog post about this structure:

http://djmatyola.com/lbdinerdan/the-abandoned-whitehouse-diner

A few years back, the sign was in good enough shape that I used it as
the symbol for my dine blog:

Thanks for looking and commenting, Igor.

A nice homage to the personal sacrifices and the enormity of the losses.

Very nice capture what ever it is.
Thank you, Ken.
I have no idea about the identity of the plant.
All I know is that it had been transplanted from a forest into one
of our pots by my wife.
It looks happy after about a year! Never seen a flower (all leaves) yet.

Sad indeed. It breaks my heart.

We still have quite a few classic diners in New Jersey that continue

Re: We're on the Road

2014-06-04 Thread Chris Mitchell
Nice shot Christine. As others have said, rather painterly.

Have a great road trip, look after those feet and best to Darrel

 Hi Everyone:

Darrel and I are doing a bit of a road trip. Here's a shot from the Betsy
Ross house in Philadelphia. We saw all the historic sites here and tossed a
penny on Ben Franklin's grave. Headed to Hartford, CT tomorrow.

This is my first real outing with the K-3 and did moderate shooting today--a
few shots here and here since I'm still getting to know the camera and the
fact Darrel and I are out of touring shape--lots of sore feet tonight since
we did all our visiting by foot for an 8 hour day. I didn't bring a laptop,
so I'm not really post-processing on the road--just a shot here and there on
 the iPad.

 We'll be in touch!
 Cheers, Christine

Re: PESO - A Patch of Green

Lovely. Excellent textures, colours and I like the composition too.

 G'day all

The texture of this rock face was interesting enough, but I thought the
small shrub clinging to it was a added bonus.

Pentax K-5 with DA 18-135 mm.

 Comments etc, appreciated:
