PJ, just because they are driving does not mean that they have a valid
state driver's license.

I have a client who is a legal immigrant with a valid green card and
is working on his citizenship. He has a contacting business, and
hires subcontractors on many jobs. .One of his subs had his truck
impounded, because it was being operated by an undocumented alien
without a valid license from this state. He had a valid license from
Nicaragua, and New Jersey permits him to legally drive in this state
with that license, but only for up to 60 days after becoming a
resident. This particular individual received two tickets for driving
beyond the guest statute period; the third time he was stopped,
their impounded the employer's vehicle. Since the employer was a
friend of my client, I went to municipal court with the driver, got
the charges reduced and a fine paid, and the truck released. I
suspect, however, that he is out there still driving on that alien
license, but for someone else now.

Re: PESO - News ...

2014-06-12 Thread Stanley Halpin
Another fine portrait Bruce! I would bet that the model is pleased with it.

I’ll mostly echo others’ comments:
- square crop might be better, but oh well. Though I understand that
photoshoppery can be used to add e.g. blank space on the sides of this shot.
- shadow under the nose is a bit too dark, but oh well. I understand the
tradeoff with cheekbone shading.
- it is a slightly ambiguous pose and expression. I usually prefer photos
without captions - let the viewer see what he/she sees rather then tell them
what they are looking at. In this case, if captioned, I think “Reflection”
might be better - a label for what she is doing rather than a label creating a
story or sorts about why she is reflecting.

On the other hand, I like the pose. I think it looks natural, and I disagree
about her right hand - I often sit that way leaning into (the hidden) part of
my hand. I never would have thought twice about it in this case if I hadn’t
seen Bill’s comment.
However, I think a person's elbows are not particularly attractive, and your
model has two of them right there catching my eye. Not sure what could be done
in this case except maybe to dull the shine on her right elbow and, if image
manipulation is to be part of the equation, desaturating the red in her elbows
just a schoch to lower the color contrast with her arms. Just a minor nit…

s...@stans-photography.info wrote:
Another fine portrait Bruce! I would bet that the model is pleased with it.

Thank you, Stan. The model is indeed pleased with this one, and the
others too. She's added them all to her modelling portfolio.

In this case, if captioned, I think “Reflection”
might be better - a label for what she is doing rather than a label creating
a story or sorts about why she is reflecting.

Well stated, Stan. And I think harkens back to Bill's point -- trying
too hard. Good captions are almost as difficult as the original shot.
:-) I'll keep your suggestion in mind in future.

Not sure what could be
done in this case except maybe to dull the shine on her right elbow and, if
image manipulation is to be part of the equation, desaturating the red in her
elbows just a schoch to lower the color contrast with her arms. Just a minor
 nit…

Well, that may seem minor but it's the sum of all the tiny fixes that
makes for a more esthetic image. This is another case where I zoomed
out, examined the big picture and decided that I could live with the
redness in her arms toward the elbows, but no sooner did I publish
than I had second thoughts. So I agree: the elbows should be softened
a little and the redness reduced. A high end retoucher would have done
that automatically.

As far as image manipulation goes: it should surprise no one that it
is (almost) always part of my workflow. If you saw the original you'd
find that I burned her arms quite a bit already to reduce their
brightness relative to her face -- I wanted the emphasis on her face
of course -- and specifically burned edges to reduce their apparent
width as well. In retrospect I should have desaturated the red too. I
may still do that ...

DA* 16-50 vs DA Ltd 20-40? You decide guys

2014-06-12 Thread Tim Øsleby
Long time no see. I need help from the best Pentax crew.

Subject line pretty much sums it up.
I know that 16 mm is wider than 20 mm, and that f:2,8 is faster than
f:4. I also know that smaller and lighter is smaller and lighter.

I pretty much know the good and the bads of the 16-50. I've got one at
my desk, that has served me well for about 5 years, but alas not any
more.
I know little a about how the Ltd performs.

So how do they compare int the IQ department? And what about AF speed?
My min complaint about the 16-50 was that it had trouble finding focus
when shooting fast moving music performers. Is the Ltd better at that?

I've upgraded from K-5 classic to K-3 btw. That alone should improve
focus a bit.

And while I'm here. How are you guys? Have you been bad to each other
like you used to do? Any new farts here?

And remember. I expect a lot from you, tons of first class answers.

The Rock Arch. Interesting shots across foreground rocks looking to WNW (from
near the English (?) park). Wide angle shot from one end of the veranda of the
Grand Hotel, looking towards the other end. (Note: entry fee required to go
into the hotel or onto the veranda.) Shots near the ferry docks of the piles of
luggage being transported on bicycles to/from hotels. And of course horses and
carriages.

Let me know if you find other interesting shots - I’ll be back up there in late

I find the 1/4 flower LL to be a distraction. In this case I'd prefer
to see just the one isolated flower.

That's _really_ dark, Christine. Lightest pixels must be around 1/2
intensity. Detail In shadows: none. Figures visible, as Dan says.

How does the detail look in the shadows? Good? Not so good? I'm working
off the iPad here and just wanted to know how it looks on your calibrated

Thanks everyone. It's really interesting because I am getting detail in the
shadows on my iPad. It will be interesting what I see on the desktop at home.
Glad I tested it out with you guys. Cheers, Christine

Dan,
I appreciate the bit different composition.
I wish the fuzzy spot at the bottom of the other bloom was sharp.

 Thanks, Attila, Paul and Bruce.

Paul, I thought about isolating the main bloom from the other one, and
I almost plucked it on the spot, but then I decided that including
part of the other bloom would make the image a bit different from all
 the others I was taking.

I guess this proves different isn't necessarily better. ,g.

If you can't decide between two lenses it means you need both of them.
