PESO - Not a Woodland Path

2015-05-05 Thread Rick Womer
Four paces behind me is a parking lot.

Twenty-five paces ahead of me is a building under construction.

But, for a few steps on my way to work, it feels as though I'm in the woods.

PESO: Pixel Bent

2015-05-05 Thread Darren Addy
Discovered Adobe's Pixel Bender today and then spent too much time
trying to find the proper installer for my version of Photoshop.
Apparently it is included in CS6, but I'm using 5.1 with (the
confusing) 5.5 Extension manager. The only part of my version of Pixel
Bender worth playing with is the OilPaint effect.

Anyway, just playing with it on my first couple of images. This is a
previous PESO: Itty Bitty Updraft. You'll want to view it large to
see the full effect. If you don't like heavy-handed effects, don't
bother looking.
:)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/17177333737/

There is a group for this effect on Flickr. Some of them are quite
lovely, in their own right. so this may have potential for some
images.

It must've been a Horsewood, otherwise it would've been a Trojan Dog! ;-)

Yeah, yeah yeah! I would have expected it to be cedar, pine or oak.

Actually I think it works in color. As BW the only white would be in
the sky. I might put the trees a little closer to the left edge to stop
the eye. BTW I like the photo.

Cultivation happening all around us in preparation for the spring planting.
Couldn't ignore these two stark tree skeletons.

I will definitely try this in BW at some point.

I am looking for recommendations to ponder. I am in the midst of a
long-term planning process. My intent at this point is to go to
Alaska for 3± weeks late August 2016. I’ll spend 2 weeks on a cruise
ship seeing the scenery of the inner passage, glaciers, doing a few
shore excursions. But then I also will have 7-10 days total before
and after. Could fly to Brooks and see the bears there. Or elsewhere?
I could flightsee Denali. I could do the typical train/bus tour of
Denali.

Given that my goals are to a) see bears, b) see Denali, c) see other
wildlife, and d) learn a bit about the local culture, what say you?
Recommendations for how/where I spend my time?

Note that I do plan to take as much kit as needed. Tripod for sure,
longer lenses for sure.

If your cruise ports in Anchorage, Whittier or Seward, the Alaska
Railroad's Denali Star train goes from Seward to Anchorage to Fairbanks
and has a depot in Denali NP near the visitor's center.

Looking at the map, the Denali depot is real close to the airport there
as well, so you'd have a lot of flexibility using sea, air and rail.

If you ever shot 4x5, you might be familiar with Polaroid's Type 55 BW

I've done so here and by use of vivid landscapes option and backing off some

Re: PESO: White Dogwood

2015-05-05 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for looking and commenting, John.

I see your point. In this kind of shot, usually the focus is on the
tiny, spherical flowers in the center. What I actually was focusing
on here was the rear bracht of the left blossom, trying to depict the
texture and subtle colors. I guess my eyes weren't quite sharp enough
to get the focus right.

The stems seem to be in sharper focus than the flowers.
