Re: DA 35 macro on FF? Other DA on FF?

2016-03-14 Thread Darren Addy
>92% viewfinder coverage)

Steve nailed the reason you can't simply go by film camera impressions.
Stopping down will increase the effective image circle, which is not a
bad thing for macro anyway. However, the 35mm would have had an
effective FOV of 52mm, so why not simply use a 50mm macro on the K-1
as an equivalent lens? Plenty of 50mm macros that cover FF out there.

If you want wide angle macro, don't forget the crazy FF capable Venus 15mm:

It is supposed to. That is why I bought it. I forget which page I looked

According to dpreview (FWIW) the DA* 55mm F1.4 works in full frame when
stopped-down. It doesn't say how much, but according to them "Ricoh has
published a list of those lenses that will produce relatively useable
results in full frame mode, if the aperture is stopped down.", so I suppose
its official, though I couldn't find the ricoh source with a quick search.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/pentax-k-1

I'd be holding on to the FA50/1.4 myself, for now. The DA55 is my favourite
lens on APS/C, but if it winds up being an F2 or F2.8, then... meh.

Larry said he put the lens on a film body and looked through the
viewfinder and didn't *SEE* vignetting.

What you can *SEE* through the viewfinder might not give you a usable
answer.

You could use the DOF preview function to stop the lens down to it's
taking aperture, but just looking through the viewfinder it might be too
dark to see clearly whether or not it's vignetting. And it might not
show 100% of the frame.

The only way to know for sure is to make a photograph, which Larry could
have done while the had the lens mounted on that film body.

Yes, I could have. That would have meant finding a film body that would
work with the DA35, finding batteries for it, hoping it works properly
digging out a roll of film (or going out and buying one), then taking a
bunch of photos, several of which would have to be of something along
the lines of a flat white wall, completely uninteresting
photographically, and then taking the film down to be processed (much
cheaper and easier than setting my own darkroom back up), and waiting
for the photos to be processed and returned. All in all, a process that
would take at least $20 and a several hours of my time.

Which, if it was critical for me to know before a K-1 is delivered, I
*could* do. On the other hand, I could find out if someone who does
currently shoot film on Pentax bodies had already performed the
experiment. In any case, it was just idle curiosity. When I do have a
K-1, I will experiment, I will also experiment to see how well lightroom
can correct for the vignetting in post processing.

Thinking about this process does make me realize that if I want to shoot
35mm film, it's unlikely that I'd use one of the Pentax film bodies that
I've acquired along with lenses on craigslist. I miss shooting with my
SRT-101 far more than I miss shooting film. It is an old friend that ten
years since I last ran a roll of film through it, I can still use
without needing to concentrate on the mechanics, because after using it
for thirty years, it is almost like an extension of my own body.

This is why, when I did buy the Nikon gear that I always wanted as a
kid, I went back to shooting with the Minolta. Everything was backward
on the Nikon, and at the time it didn't give me enough benefit to make
up for the cognitive dissonance.

Speaking of Viv, I found a copy of "Vivian Maier - Out of the Shadows"
at my local library. Pleasantly surprised, since it is now a
well-over-$100 book that you can't buy new. This is a photo-heavy (and
words-light) book that shows her photography to good advantage. Square
format pages and her photos are almost all displayed 1 per page (some
with borders some full bleed). Each chapter begins with a couple of
pages of words and that's about it. The rest is her imagery. Chapter
titles:
Snapshots
America
Day
Maxwell
Beach
1968
Downtown
Walks
Night

288 pages. Highly recommended.

Anyway, just a heads up.

I found the DVD "Finding Vivian Maier" for $9.99 at Costco. Anyone out
there who shops at Costco & is interested should swing by the
video/books section next time you're in there.

Larry said he put the lens on a film body and looked through the
viewfinder and didn't *SEE* vignetting.

he said he didn't notice *severe* vignetting — and i looked through a 92%
viewfinder, at a bright uniformly-lit area, and could see moderate vignetting

What you can *SEE* through the viewfinder might not give you a usable
answer.

i agree, it's hard to judge moderate vignetting, and one could easily miss
minor vignetting; i was talking about the theoretical relationship of
aperture to vignetting though

The only way to know for sure is to make a photograph, which Larry could
have done while the had the lens mounted on that film body.

i could have too, i had film in my camera, but it didn't seem worth the
effort to find batteries and use up the roll; i could already see vignetting
and i had seen what seemed to be a vetted list saying it should not vignette
if stopped down to an unspecified aperture; i'm content to wait to find out
how much and what apertures when someone does a test with a K-1

Whoops, actually that one was intended to be the main picture — looks like I
switched them when copy and pasting.

So the PESO really should be: https://flic.kr/p/F9CoKZ

What you can *SEE* through the viewfinder might not give you a usable

You could use the DOF preview function to stop the lens down to it's
taking aperture, but just looking through the viewfinder it might be too
dark to see clearly whether or not it's vignetting. And it might not
show 100% of the frame.

The only way to know for sure is to make a photograph, which Larry could
have done while the had the lens mounted on that film body.

i read a few references and it seems clear that optical vignetting can
be reduced or eliminated by stopping down; the second illustration on
this page shows why:

Anyone who has used a large format camera knows this.
