Re: New toy

2017-10-24 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
That is indeed a fine camera.

I had a 6X7, which was an earlier and more basic version on the 67. It was
an amazing machine, and the lenses were huge chunks of glass. I sold the
camera and the lenses years ago, after I went digital. I still miss it at
times.

The shutter won't function without film. There's a lever of some sort in there
that is moved when film is loaded. You can manually depress it to get the
shutter to fire. Plenty of documentation for this on the web. Unfortunately I
sold all my 6x7 lenses long ago. If it's truly a 67 rather than a 6x7, it's a
premium piece.

Re: Peso-Sand Hill Cranes

2017-10-24 Thread Jack Davis
Thanks, Ann!
When I'm shooting birdies in flight
all I can hope for is getting all of
the rapidly changing composition
within a single frame.
This was one of several burst groups
that partially succeeded. They were
both well above center with the left
bird very near the left frame edge.
I had to rebuild the frame to reposition the Sandies(?) Also,
I moved the smaller left bird
closer to the right one for
compositional balance, of course.
These targets don't lend themselves
to deliberate compositions.
I take credit only for choosing to post it.

I agree with Stan - because all those images that Getty  has are images
also owned by the photographer who
is in the stock agency, whether or not Getty has put a photographers
name on the image as a watermark.

So, your client used an image on her site whose provenance she did not know or
question? I wouldn’t consider that “innocent use”, I would consider it
carelessness or stupidity.

Getty is in the business of selling images. Of course they should sue for
misuse of their property, usage of their images without permission. They are
foolish if they do not protect the source of their income. They should be able
to profit from ANY use of their images, whether “innocent” or not. Saying that
they “profit from innocent use” paints a rather dark, and in my opinion, a
rather biased view of Getty.

Re: SIGMA 70-200mm f/2.8 EX APO - thoughts?

2017-10-24 Thread Steve Sharpe
Thanks for the advice, Mark. I did end up buying the lens yesterday
after testing it - no purple fringes. On the K3 my example is tack
sharp when taken down two stops, and a little softer at F2.8 when
viewed at 100%, bit that is to be expected.

I also took some test shots on my "full-frame" camera (the MZ-S), but
it will be awhile before I am able to examine them...

So I am pleased for my C$225. If the aberrations turn out to be too
much when I get a full-frame DSLR...well, I'll cross that bridge when I
get to it.

Now the seller is trying to convince me to buy a 4X5 camera that he has
(actually he has four)...

Again, thanks to everyone who helped me in this!

TRADE: My (mint) silver FA 77mm f1.8 Limited for your DA* 200mm

2017-10-24 Thread Darren Addy
I realize that I could (with perhaps a bit of patience) sell my Silver
77mm Limited with more than enough to purchase an excellent DA* 200mm
f2.8, but with the ebay/paypal fees and hassles of listing (etc) I
thought I would try a direct approach...

Let me know if you are interested in a trade, straight up. Can supply
pics of my lens, but it is truly like new with the original metal cap
and Pentax drawstring pouch. Will trade for a similar condition DA*
200mm f2.8 with hood & caps.

Respectfully,
Darren Addy

Re: Shocked that he was sued for stealing photography

2017-10-24 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
A client forwarded a trip report and an image to her travel website. She
should have suspected it was not the client's photo, but she unthinkingly
posted it, and then took it down almost immediately when notified by
Getty. She knew, and I knew, she had no legal defense, and tried to
negotiated with Getty, but they demanded the full license fee for that
image, which she paid. She did not do it purposely, but carelessly, but
Getty treated it no differently from an intentional misuse.

I have heard from others that Getty is perhaps a bit over zealous in
collecting fees and penalties, and some suspect it is not part of the
company's business plan.

Years ago, I posted images on a stock site, which was acquired by Getty, I
received some small fees from the original site, but nothing after Getty
took it over. That really doesn't surprise me, as the images were not that
fantastic or useful to others.

Re: Adobe doesn't seem to want my money

2017-10-24 Thread Henk Terhell
David, I followed your route and got LR 6 now. Familiar interface and no
need for a subscription in the coming years.
And with Pentax DNG there surely won't be a problem for any Pentax K-1

I bought LR 4 more than 5 years ago and therefore costs sofar are only some
$ 30/year.
New K-1 lenses are not recognized and can't be corrected of course in LR 4 .
As I don't like the CC subscription model I wonder whether it is a good idea
to buy LR 6 now it is still available. Perhaps this would serve me an equal
long time.
I don't need more cloud storage having already 1 TB with Office 365 and
unlimited JPEG storage with Flickr Pro, plus a set of external hard disks
for my RAW files.
Any comments whether I should give my money again to Adobe to a soon
outdated version of LR?

First, Lightroom 6 will be the final standalone version of Lightroom.
There will be a Lightroom 6.3 update that will provide Nikon D850 support
(which is here now for Lightroom Classic CC, Lightroom CC, and Photoshop
CC), but that's all that we can expect. There will be no further updates
after this year to Lightroom 6. While Lightroom 6 will still be available
for an unspecified amount of time, going forward, there will simply be two
new subscription-only desktop versions: Lightroom Classic CC and Lightroom
CC.
