:Re: :Re: Test::

2018-05-21 Thread Alan C
I first tried with no subject & that worked, then with various characters &
letters until I found that it worked with one or two colons & then with any
string in between. "Intelligent" trial & error!

The "boffin" at my ISP said there was nothing wrong with the settings & he
could see no reason why it shouldn't work. My wife had the same problem so
the glitch is definitely not at our end. I still suspect something at the
ISP's server. I sent him an e-mail similar to this so we'll see what he
finds today.

I discovered the most amazing thing. If I put a colon (:) at the beginning
&

end of the subject line, it sends just fine.

Very strange indeed. I have to ask - what made you decide to try that? By
design or by accident?

Hmmm - don't think I can help. I don't use Windows Live Mail. For normal
email
I use Thunderbird but for the PDML I use my lyons-ryan domain's web mail
so

that
list messages don't get mixed up with other mail.

Perhaps there are others who might have a better insight into the issue.

Thanks for noticing and commenting on that. Rick's shot probably
wouldn't have made it into the book without Ted's and vice versa.
People seem to assume that a shot of theirs that doesn't get into the
book has been judged inferior in some way. That's often not the case
at all. A photograph has to "work" in the context of a whole lot of
other images from photographers with wildly varying styles - a very
tricky thing to attempt. Few such pairings are so serendipitous, but
we really put a lot of effort into making the book a cohesive work, at
least as far as such a thing is possible. Sometimes a great part is
left out to help achieve a better sum.

I do as well. I actually have one Pentax dealer in the valley and
another about 50 miles away. They can sell me Pentax lenses, as well
as a wide variety of other photographic equipment, for about the same
price I would pay online, and occasionally I can buy something from
them for a bit less than I would pay online. I like supporting my
local dealers and I get to play with the hardware, such as trying a
lens on my body, before committing to buying it.

Most of what I buy online is nickel-and dime stuff.

Paul -

I looked at the listing  for the 70-200 on Amazon and noticed that it
says "*Packaging may reveal contents.*Choose*Conceal Package*at checkout."

I googled that phrase and found this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/56jeqt/psa_make_sure_to_request_a_box_when_ordering_from/

Maybe it was not the listing you clicked on - there was another form
focus camera - but maybe its flagged in their shipping instruction
database as not needing any additional packaging.

Good luck

Thanks, Stan - you're right about what I'm contemplating.

Christine, with the newest one you can do a slideshow in the app. On the menu
choose Present.

I've never had a version which has the Map module, so I won't miss it and have
no idea why I'd want it. I don't recall ever yearning for such a thing.

I've no intention of ever buying a printer again, but it's handy to be able to
send a fully-worked file to a print-house, so that's something I'd like, with
soft-proofing. But I haven't done that for over a year. I'd be surprised if
it's not in the pipeline for the all-cloud version, ditto the book stuff.

I've never done a book, but I would quite like to at some point, so something
else for me to be aware of.

On the plus side it's easy to send stuff to Wordpress.

I will look for Julianne Kost's video.

Thanks both - very helpful.

Very strange indeed. I have to ask - what made you decide to try that? By

Yeah - I know. I could use Thunderbird that way for PDMl but I started using
webmail for the PDML long before I changed to Thunderbird and I just got used to

Amazon did it again!

2018-05-21 Thread Paul Stenquist
Some may recall that I received a $1600 70-200/2.8 lens form Amazon last week
that was delivered in the Pentax box with a label stuck on it. I checked the
autofocus fine tuning and found it way out of range. I called Amazon and told
them it was defective, and that they can’t ship lenses without packaging. They
apologized profusely and send a second lens by overnight delivery. The UPS guy
arrived with the replacement 70-200 about an hour ago. I met him at the door,
rather than having my son handle it. I was shocked to see that once again, the
lens was not boxed! I refused delivery. Called Amazon and told them to see if
they could figure out how to put lens number three in a box. They will deliver
another one tomorrow. We will see.

My DA 18-55 WR is superb. Very sharp & feels good. Better than the
unusually good version of the FA 28-80 I had before. The best thing
about it was the price - a mere $12 because it was "shop soiled",
meaning a bit of damage to the box! I used it exclusively with excellent
results on the K5 during our UK trip last year.

I appreciate hearing your reactions, Larry.

My intent was for the model's shape and pose to be largely in
silhouette and have the spotlight pick out her eyes. So the darkness
is intentional.

Re: Lightroom CC

2018-05-21 Thread Stanley Halpin
Christine, Bob, I will try to clarify. I slightly misspoke, and also we are
talking about different programs.
Too many versions with almost the same name.
Old = LR5.x or LR6.x
Newer = LR Classic CC[or LR Classic Cheers,
Christine when customized for a particular user?]
Newest = LR Creative Cloud aka LR CC

My chronology may be a bit off, LR Classic CC may well have come along after LR
CC, but Old, Newer, Newest equates to degree of integration to the Cloud. As I
understand it.

In the Old LR6.x, if I installed the Mobile App on my iPad, I had the behavior
I described above. I.e., I could review/edit/synch material on my iPad. But
only images which had been selectively sent to the Cloud from my desktop by
indicating/selecting a collection to be synched.

In the Newer LR Classic CC which you and I are using Christine, yes you can
selectively synch new images from your iPad to the Cloud as well as work with
images which you have selectively synched from your desktop to the Cloud.
Because of connectivity issues while traveling, I have not used this set of
features.

In the Newest LR CC which I believe you are contemplating, Bob, I do believe
that all of your images live in the Cloud. Whether you take a shot with your
phone or import to your iPad or download from a card to your desktop, if you
import to LR from any device anywhere, it will go to the Cloud within your
catalogue there. I believe you can back up your images and your catalogue on
your local internal and/or external drives, but the assumption seems to be
that you are working within the Cloud. When traveling without connectivity, I
assume that the images on your device are just accumulated in a buffer of sorts
and squirted to the Cloud once you are back in the civilized world of high
speed connections. I.e., yes I believe you are right Bob.

One additional note: it is my impression that the newest version, i.e. LR CC,
does not yet have all of the editing tools available in LR Classic CC. I have
no idea what is “missing” and haven’t paid attention as I have no interest in a
total-Cloud solution.

And speaking of tools, as a total aside, one of the very handy new tools within
LR Classic CC, Dehaze, has now been relocated within the tool panels, it is now
nestled in-between the Clarity and Vibrance sliders in the Presence panel.

I'm having e-mail problems.

I can send using Windows Live Mail which I've always used but the e-mails
just vanish.

The one you replied to was send directly from Vox Telecoms Webmail, not from
the normal user's @lantic.

I did mostly receive the other PDML posts OK but none from Jack Davis or Ann
Sanfedele (I have to access those from the Archives). I have missed a couple
of Bank e-mails too.

At one stage I found I could send OK if I removed or simplified the Subject
line but now that does,'t work any more. I can't even send to myself.

I have now set the Vox Webmail to not delete after sending or receiving via
Live Mail which may throw some light on the problem.

Perhaps you have some suggestions?

Re: Lightroom CC

2018-05-21 Thread Bob W-PDML
Hi Stan,

Thanks. I'm looking at LR CC, not Classic CC.

For the time being I'm only thinking about when I travel in Europe,
predominantly France, where hotels generally have fast enough wifi, so there's
no need for an unlimited data plan.

I think, but could be wrong, that if I travel in the wilds, the edits will be
stored locally and synced when a suitable wifi connection is available, but I
could still post a snap or two over a phone connection, if one is available.

I’ve just started trialling LR CC on my iPhone, iPad and on my Windows 10

The idea is to use my Leica when I’m cycling in France later this year -
previously I’ve used my Fuji X20 - import from the SD card into LR on the
iPhone, edit, post from LR directly to my Wordpress site.

So far, so good. That process works quite nicely.

This mobile version of LR is very impressive, easy to use, quick and quite
comprehensive. Most of the editing controls that I’m likely to use are
quite obvious and simple. The big change that strikes me is the way
profiles work, or maybe it’s just the labelling.

In v5 and earlier my normal process, for colour, has been to use the
medium contrast curve, sharpen for landscape or faces as appropriate, and
add Punch. That’s it usually- it’s rare that I do much else.

If anyone here is using CC, do you know which settings are the
