PESO x4: Spring Flowers

2019-08-26 Thread David Mann
It's been several months since I picked up the dslr but our magnolia tree is
going bonkers this year so I wanted to get a couple of pics. While I was out
there I saw a few other opportunities so went back in to get the macro lens.

Magnolia flower:
http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1066/#peso

Rhododendron bud:
http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1067/#peso

Rose Hips (technically not a spring one):
http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1068/#peso

Helleborus:
http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1069/#peso
I spent a few minutes waiting for a bumblebee to visit this flower, which it
did, but the photos didn't really come out well.

This time I made a bit more use of the tools in Camera Raw while opening the
files in Photoshop... very pleased with what it could do.

Cheers,
Dave

PESO: an insect

2019-08-26 Thread Subash Jeyan
hi,

i have been occupied generally with other things to take part in pdml
meaningfully but i thought i'll share something nice that happened to
the son, Adit. he wants to be a naturalist and have been photographing
bugs and insects a lot in recent times. one of them, a photo of a
less-than-1cm-long 'eggplant horned planthopper', has been nominated as
observation of the day by iNaturalist, the citizen science project.

the photo on instagram:

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1ovUXOgSnS/

he used ks1, DAL 55-300 and raynox dcr250 to take the photo, so it's
not strictly OT ;)

thanks for looking, subash

An iPhone 8 Plus and a Polaroid SLR670a (nee SX-70 refurbished and upgraded by
MiNT Camera) make an excellent travel photography combination. I came home with
30 Polaroid exposures that I like and a similar number of iPhone photos that I
like. They have a completely different look and feel, and each camera has its
limitations and advantages, and both were a delight to work with, made some
satisfying photographs. I'll be making a little book to send to all the folks I
visited out of the 60-some photos.

The amusing thing is that when all is said and done, and I consider the total
trip bulk of the kit, the iPhone 8 Plus with table-top tripod, a couple of
Moment accessory lenses and remote, and the Polaroid camera, flash, and four
packs of film, take up about the same amount of space and weigh about the same
as my Leica CL with three lenses, batteries, etc does.

Had me laughing anyway... :)

Re: OT. Nicer photo in the paper

2019-08-26 Thread Paul Sorenson
Thanks for posting that, Larry.  Definitely an eye-catching image of two
lovely young women.

A pox upon the Air Canada employees who forced her to remove her hijab.
Air Canada's response about having to see the passenger's entire face is
nothing but a bullshit excuse for blatant profiling.

like a classical painting.

I realize that the point of photo journalism is generally documentation rather
than aesthetics, so it's a pleasant surprise when I see such a pretty, rather
than just eye catching, photo in the paper.
