RE: 'Why I still shoot with Pentax'

2020-11-24 Thread jcoyle
I started with a Pentax because an engineer with Cable and Wireless had a
Spotmatic, and said it was the best camera he'd ever owned: he loaned it to me
for a week and I was hooked. Arranged with a friend travelling home via
Singapore to get one for me, but couldn't stretch to a Spottie, so opted for an
SV. Since then, except for one period with a Fujica (ST5n ?) after my SV kit
was stolen, have stayed with Pentax, although I also have a Rolleicord for 6x6,
and a Fed4 rangefinder when noise would be an issue.
Sitting in the cupboard are several Spotties, another SV, K2DmD, ME, Super
program, and still in regular use an *ist-D as well as my daily K5ii - and an
MZ-S for film. Lenses for M42 from 18 to 500mm, and for M or K-mount from 16
to 400, so I'm not going to switch any time soon, as the key thing for me is
that every Pentax I've ever owned has been an improvement on the last and just
worked for me - and the glass is so good.

Re: 'Why I still shoot with Pentax'

2020-11-24 Thread Mark C
I still use Pentax for the same reason - it still does the job for me. I
also appreciate the quality Pentax puts into its cameras. Over the past
couple of years I've taught a few landscape photography classes and that
has exposed me to other camera systems. Pentax stands out in several
ways - the image quality (especially at at high iso),  the quality of
the view finders, weather sealing, and the many sensor shift features
(IBIS, horizon correction, etc.) all come to mind.

I have a contrarian streak and don't mind not using a mainstream brand.
But I'm also not a brand loyalist - if something better comes along and
changing brands makes sense, so be it. For the time being, Pentax is OK
by me.

Re: 'Why I still shoot with Pentax'

2020-11-24 Thread Henk Terhell
Lenses I got since acquiring the P30, P30T, MX (2x), Spotmatic (2x), K2,
*istD, K10D, K-5 and K-1 (all in my display cabinet and still working,
except the *istD) prevent me switching to another brand.
Though the K-5 is still OK, I would like to switch to higher resolution
APS-C for some use, so K-70 or KP are options, but not the future K-3 3
with its fixed screen.

The K-1 is such a complete and solid camera, so no need to replace it now.

Same here. Plus, I am retired and on a tight budget. When I decided to
go DSLR the K-70 was a body at the right price that I could use my
K-1000 glass on. Since then I have been able to buy a couple of new
Pentax lenses to match the K-70 body.

I generally don't like hanging my camera or bicycle on the bicycle where they
get all the vibration and road shocks. I use a backpack or a sling bag so that
my body absorbs most of the shock and vibration.

I almost always have a camera in my cycling backpack. Usually I keep it light …
just a small camera and one lens … but I've carried up to a three lens kit with
travel tripod for a whole day's ride occasionally. I almost took the Hasselblad
out with a 135mm lens today.

I have several packs that I use when cycling, most common one is my Timbuk2
Rapid Pack (now discontinued) which is light, spacious, and cost me about $90
in 2017. When I'm more specifically carrying camera gear, I tend to use either
a Wotancraft Mini Rider sling bag or a Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L … current
versions are on their websites with current prices. The Waterfield Musette bag
is another really handy bag that will fit a camera and a travel tripod that
I've used extensively. It's particular good if I know I'm going to want to stop
and make a shot regularly as I ride, because I can just swing it around to my
side and access the contents.

When it comes to carrying *anything* on a bicycle, of course, "less is always
more." Much better to only carry exactly what you are going to use and no
extras.

Amen to that.

A few years ago I was showing one of my nephews, then 16, my Leica M3. He
turned it round in his hands for a while before asking “how do you switch it
on?”.
